Winter holidays are a great way to get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and enjoy some time in the snow (or simply ‘less warm’ conditions if you’re not quite there yet!). But, when it comes to packing for a winter holiday, it can be hard to know what to bring. After all, this is a stretch away from the sun, sea and sand getaways that dominated the travel brochures a couple of decades ago.

Today’s article is going to provide some tips on the best outfits to take on a winter holiday.

Choose the Right Layers

The key to staying warm and comfortable on a winter holiday is to choose the right layers. You want to pick out pieces that are lightweight, but also warm and comfortable.

Start with a good base layer such as a long-sleeved t-shirt or a thermal top. Then, add a mid-layer such as a fleece or a hoodie. Finally, add a waterproof outer layer such as a ski jacket to keep you warm and dry.

Opt for Waterproof and Insulated Boots

It’s also important to choose the right footwear for a winter holiday. You want to pick out a pair of waterproof and insulated boots that will keep your feet warm and dry.

Look for boots that are made of waterproof material such as leather or nylon. They should also be insulated with a thick lining to keep your feet warm in the cold weather.

Of course, this is also where you need to take into account your packing capacity. After all, with airlines getting stricter by the year on the amount of baggage you can take with you for a reasonable charge, taking bulky winter boots in a suitcase may no longer be an option.

Pack a Few Extra Layers

Next, it’s always a good idea to pack a few extra layers. This will ensure that you’re prepared for any weather conditions that may arise.

Look for a few lightweight pieces such as a hoodie or a vest that you can layer over your base and mid-layers. This will give you the flexibility to add or remove layers depending on the temperature.

It’s Not Always About the Fashion-factor

Finally, remember that it’s not always about the fashion-factor when it comes to packing for a winter holiday. Sure, you may want to look good while you’re away, but practicality should always come first.

Look for pieces that will keep you warm and comfortable in the winter weather. Let fashion take a backseat and focus on the practicality of each item that you’re packing.

This is also the point in which we should remind you about not becoming complacent when it comes to the cool temperatures. Sure, the figures might be sub-zero, but if you hit the slopes don’t underestimate the power of the sun. Make sure that as well as all of your winter garments, and you’re armed with sufficient sunscreen to adequately protect you. In snowier conditions, it may be worth also getting some kind of travel insurance, you’ll need a specialised travel insurance if you are doing sports but if you are just planning to have a more leisurely snow-filled holiday, it’s worth looking at reputable travel insurance providers like Staysure to cover your flight and belongings.

Without wishing to be repetitive, this is anything but the ‘simple’ sun getaway that used to be oh-so popular. It’s cold, enthralling – but also full of risks that need to be managed accordingly.
