It might be that the media is currently obsessed with the upcoming brawl between UFC champion Conor McGregor and boxing legend Floyd Mayweather this August. But there’s another, arguably more, exciting boxing match taking place just 21 days later.

On September 16th, Kazakhstan boxer Gennady Golovkin, who currently resides in LA, will take on Canelo Alvarez in a middleweight title fight that is set to be the biggest anticipated boxing PPV since Mayweather Vs Pacquiao. A match that is set to be a dream come true for Golovkin who has fought his way through 7 countries and worked incredibly hard in his LA home to get to the level he is at now.

Both boxers themselves have history with Floyd Mayweather. He is just one of the high-profile fighters that Golovkin has been linked with in the past.

It’s even been rumoured that Car Froch was tempted to come out of retirement to face Golovkin, but the three-time super-middleweight champion appears to be content as boxing commentator for Sky Sports as well as a brand ambassador for partypoker and collaborating with Sony and their smartwatch to leave retirement.

If Golovkin wins this fight he will cement himself as one of the greatest middleweights in the history of boxing – at a time when critics have warned that the 35-year-old is showing signs of his age. It’s even rumoured that he may choose to retire if he wins, bowing out when he’s at the top of his game. However, if he does lose this may just be the beginning of a rivalry between himself and Alvarez.

Both camps appear to hold a quiet confidence that their fighter knows how to win, which is what makes this fight so anticipating. These two men are incredibly even matched, so it’s hard to pick a favourite. One thing for sure, it will be a hard-hitting fight with little dancing. Expect each side to go hard and fast for each other. It has, however, been refreshing to see a build-up to a match between two fighters who seem to greatly respect each other and have been pleasant at global press conferences. Whereas McGregor Vs Mayweather continues to be a media circus of pettiness between the two.

The fact remains that, although both matches will be eagerly watched by fans worldwide, only one of these fights is a true fight – Golvokin Vs Alvarez – the other is just a spectacle that will make McGregor and Mayweather even richer than they already are.
