LA’s the Place caught up with Elyas Balta from Baltic Iron Doors to find out what his service entails and what current wrought iron trends are.
LA’s the Place: What inspired you to make the drastic career change from engineering to opening Baltic Iron Doors & Naddour’s Ornamental Iron™?
Elyas Balta: I remember at a very young age doodling on paper architectural elements of buildings and facades, and my family’s background is in various trades of metal working gave me great exposure. Though in my pursuit of higher education, my internal drive for deep understanding and analytical skills lead me to study applied physics which channeled me in fiberoptic research and engineering.
It took me several years of work in my field after I realized that my passion is in architectural design and metal work, and my strength of being extremely detail oriented was misapplied along with my drive for perfection.
I returned to the wrought iron industry with great rejoice and have put all my strengths to work, including my engineering background which has expanded my analytical skills for which I apply on a daily basis to channel each project unto the most fitting design and processes to create that wow masterpiece.
LATP: How is Naddour’s ornamental iron differ from Baltic Iron Doors?
EB: Both companies produce highly decorative wrought iron products. Naddour’s ornamental iron is the core with a full line of iron products covering all the wrought iron needs of any residential project in southern California. Nothing is beyond our capabilities when it comes to designing and forging beautiful pieces of functional art Baltic Iron Doors is a branch- off, specializing in custom wrought iron door production for the remodel and new home construction across all states. Baltic iron doors has a streamlined manufacturing process to allow us to value build our custom Iron doors and provide amazing value of iron doors to our customers.
LATP: You emphasize the ironwork behind the beautiful Baltic Iron Doors & Naddour’s Ornamental Iron being done by artisans. Can you expound on their expertise and commitment to craftsmanship?
EB: All of our products are hand forged and made from straight pieces of iron bars which are heated and forged on an anvil with a hammer to create each scroll. The process is similar to art glass manufacturing where the glass is blown to shape. Our staff of forgers go through a 5 year training program in which their skills both in forging and passion for perfections is ingrained. Our company culture is branded into our work ethics and products. LATP: Where are they made?
EB: All of Naddour ornamental iron and Euroline products are made in our 30,000 square feet manufacturing facility in orange county, California . Our Baltic Iron Doors product line is partly manufactured in our overseas facility and shipped in for the later stages of manufacturing, assembly, glazing and accessories.
LATP: For a custom order, how long does it take for it to be delivered/installed?
EB: Custom staircases are on a 4-8 weeks lead-time depending on design and size of the staircase. The delivery and installation for a full wrought iron staircase is carefully staged to be one day. Custom wrought iron doors are 8-12 weeks. The delivery and installation of the iron door is one day. Finish work around the door and wall touch may follow on separate days.
LATP: If a client wants to accessorize their entire house in wrought iron, do you offer special packages?
EB: We do offer package pricing on multiple products for the same house when placed on the same order. On new home construction projects we handle everything from the simple backyard fence to the grand staircase and beautiful front door. There are tremendous benefits for the homeowner as we are able to often install multiple items on the same day which allows us to pass the savings back to the homeowner/
LATP: What are some popular iron accessories homeowners are requesting currently?
EB: There are endless ways to decorate your home with wrought iron. There are two very popular remodels
Replacing the plain, track- looking staircase railing and transforming the foyer into a grand elegant entrance with a beautiful railing. It is often missed that the railing can and should be the most beautiful piece of furniture in the house as it is often in the foyer and the first thing notices upon entering the house.

EB: It is unbelievable how much of a difference an iron front door or a wrought iron railing and can add appeal and value to a home. A lot of professional in the industry hire us to Stage the house and to make the home feel like a custom house with our fine custom iron products. You can view endless examples of before and after photos showing the transformation. On average we have analyzed that there is a 5 to 1 return on investment with our products. For example replacing old track looking double door with a beautiful iron door is about $5000. the difference it makes on the house will add about $25,000 in value. This can translate directly into the sale value based on the appeal factor and the same goes for the staircase railing remodel.
LATP: What kinds of aging can you expect from wrought iron home accessories that are exposed to the elements?
EB: Wrought iron products offer the least maintenance route for the homeowner. Our interior products like wrought iron railing are maintenance free and guaranteed for life. Our exterior products will last forever as
Long as they are maintained properly. Our doors are designed to go years maintenance free other than cleaning it of course. The color finish will start to naturally age and get more rustic which adds appeal to the door. The door may be in need of a new paint coat which is hand applied on site every about 10 to 15 years. In some cases depending on your home and exposure to various elements such as sea salt mist and etc the door may have to be painted more frequently

EB: Our free design consultation covers an in-home appointment to come out and meet with the homeowner to get a deep understanding of the project and analyze the layout of the home and the decor to guide and design the wrought iron product to best complement the home and insure that the design creates that amazing accent on the home. We don’t just want to make beautiful pieces we want to make sure that it is the perfect match for your style and your home’s decor.
