Lal Mirch – New Kid on the Block

Conveniently located in the heart of Studio City, Lal Mirch or ‘red chili pepper’ in Hindi, is Zaman Jaman’s take on traditional Indian cuisine with a contemporary twist. Its cozy interior and warm tones make it the perfect setting for a quiet romantic dinner or a family get-together. Traditional Indian touches give it a rustic look. Lal Mirch
But what really has the town talking is their authentic Indian cuisine with a difference. Growing up amidst the aromas of Indian spices and seasonings, Jaman knows exactly how to take a traditional Indian recipe and infuse it with a special something that makes it memorable. Take their signature dish – the Chicken Tikka Masala. You’ll find it in almost every Indian restaurant. But Lal Mirch’s offering has just the right amount of tomato tanginess and creaminess. The melt-in-your mouth chicken gets its charcoal flavor from their modern tandoor (clay oven).
Lal Mirch, AmbienceRed pepper is a key ingredient in Indian curries and the best dish to fire up those taste buds, is the Lal Mirch Lava, but at your own risk! It’s a red hot sizzling dish that gets its unforgettable flavor from five different kinds of peppers – red hot pepper, Cayane pepper and three secret peppers from the chef’s own toolkit. But clients who are fans of the dish, like it just the way it is.
Lal Mirch, Alu GobiAnother crowd pleaser is their Chicken Bhuna – chicken cooked in thick sauce with tomatoes, onions and bell peppers. A Bhuna (roasted) dish can never taste good if the ingredients aren’t fresh. At Lal Mirch the spices are imported all the way from India to preserve their freshness and quality. The produce is freshly picked from the farmer’s market.Lal Mirch, Sizzler, Tandoori Seafood lovers, don’t miss their Shrimp Vindalu, a dish from western region of India. Plump pieces of shrimp sit in a spicy and buttery sauce that goes wonderfully well with white rice.
If you are up for some adventure, try their Quail Tandoori. Soft Quail meat is marinated in yogurt, fresh spices and grilled in their special tandoor. At Lal Mirch they marinate their meat for at least 24 hours, which allows the flavors to soak in and makes the meat succulent.
Lal Mirch, Orange SherbetFor your sweet tooth fix dip into a fresh orange. Yes, their house specialty is Orange Sherbet – an orange flavored frozen dessert served inside, well… a fresh orange. It’s a beauty!
This delicious food will not put a dent in your wallet. “We want people to be able to come back again and again,” says owner, Jaman.
These A grade dishes are served up by their executive chef who has 19 years of culinary experience under his belt. But the final word is of course Jaman’s who individually tastes every item on the menu before it’s served. And food is in his genes. Jaman comes from a family of chefs and restaurant owners. He learned early on, from his uncle, that each dish needs to have a distinct and unique flavor. So, when he opened his dream restaurant in partnership with his cousin Taj Chowdhury, Jaman made sure that each dish looks and tastes different. The curries don’t

blend into each other.

Lal Mirch also undertakes big catering assignments. Their last big catering order was for Fraise Electronics, for 600 people! They have already got rave reviews. They’re Zagat rated and have been recommended by Larry Lipson of Daily News. So the next time you’re craving authentic Indian flavors, with a kick, you know where to go.

  • Hi Arpi – I’m glad you tried out the restaurant and liked the food. I also liked their personalized service.

  • I just ate there tonight and the food was delicious. I had the chicken lal mirch , rice, samosa, aloo chop (potato balls), and onion bhaji (crispy onion fritters) as recommended by Mr. Jaman (one of the owners). For someone such as myself who doesn’t eat dairy, I was very happy with the selection. I was able to enjoy the food in a lovely environment with great service. The atmosphere is cozy and the location is very convenient. I am not an Indian food connoisseur but after today, I have definitely found another place to dine. A refreshing change from all of the Sushi and Italian restaurants on Ventura Blvd.
