When was the last time you tie-dyed something? Most of us stopped making tie-dyed clothes and accessories when we were kids transitioning into teens who were too cool for bright colors. Luckily, tie-dye is still a fashionable choice that we can embrace in adulthood. With the right colors and the right items, you can wear tie-dye year-round, including this fall. You should tie-dye the following three clothing items for the fall.

Feminine: Maxi Dresses and Skirts

Maxi dresses and skirts are some of the most popular fall clothing options. Tie-dyeing them can turn these fall staples into a unique focal point of your outfit.

Try to tie-dye dresses or skirts made from natural materials, such as cotton, linen, or silk. Natural fibers soak up the dye better, so you’ll have a more vibrant finished product.

You can choose any pattern you want for a dress or skirt. Specific patterns such as mandalas, diamonds, or spirals look best when the center of the pattern is on the front of your dress, around the chest and stomach area. Patterns without this center, such as freestyle, shibori, and folding, look best on skirts.

Outerwear: Jackets and Sweatshirts

Outerwear, such as jackets and sweatshirts, are typically thicker than maxi dresses and skirts. However, if you choose ones made of natural materials and you have plenty of dye, you can still tie-dye these clothing items. Making your own dye will ensure you don’t run out. You can use mica powder for tie-dyeing fabric if you mix it with a binder, such as paint or soft gel.

Once your homemade dye is ready, you can apply it to your jacket or sweatshirt. Since jackets often zip or button in the front, choose a pattern that doesn’t have a center or place the center of the pattern on the back. Ombre is a great center-less option that would look stunning on a jacket. You could also place a bullseye on the back. Sweatshirts are often pullovers, so you can use the patterns we mentioned with maxi dresses, such as spirals or mandalas. Ombre and other center-less patterns will also look good on a sweatshirt.

Accessories: Scarves and Socks

Accessories are among the most important parts of a wardrobe, and you can use them in your tie-dyeing fun as well. Scarves and socks are the easiest accessories to tie-dye since they’re easy to fold and often come in natural materials.

Since scarves and socks are smaller than the clothing items we listed above, we suggest using freestyle methods that don’t have a center design. Marble, accordion, and crumple are some of the best options for these smaller clothing items.

While you can tie-dye any clothing items you want for the fall, these three items are trendy and accessible. You’ll feel like you have a fresh fall wardrobe.
