Grief is overwhelming and can take over your life. Going through the loss of a loved one can do a lot to a person, and it can feel like you are in a hole that’s impossible to escape. These feelings are normal, but every person’s recovery process is different. Read on to learn some tips for turning grief into a growing experience and recovering in a healthy way.

Attend Grief Counseling

The first step of growing with grief is managing it, and one of the best ways you can do that is through a grief counseling session. It may seem like a lot to do after you first experience a loss, but you could find some healing during your first counseling session.

There are separate group and private counseling options, and you don’t have to worry about doing anything you don’t want to. You control the pace. With that said, remember that you will only get out of it what you can put in, so you should still push yourself a little bit to open up.

Remember You’re Not Alone

There are grief counseling sessions where you can join a group and share your experiences, but you also have friends and family you can open up to. Grief rarely targets one sole individual. Instead, it affects everyone connected to the person who passed away, and these people should serve as your support system. They can help lift you up in the times you feel down, but to truly recover from the situation, you must similarly help them in their lowest moments. One of the best ways to process grief and grow from it is to listen to those in the same situation as you and see how you can help them.

Give Yourself Time

Approaching grief as a growing experience may take some of the pressure off the situation, but you must remember that this is a long process. Bereavement and recovery do not happen overnight, and you should never feel down on yourself for having those low moments or intense feelings. You are human like everyone else, and you’ll need time to process these emotions. Consider journaling to remember that while every feeling is unique, they all fit into a bigger picture of your emotional growth.

It will still be challenging to grow from grief, but after going through the process, you will be thankful that you approached it in this way. You’ll never be able to escape it entirely, but you can use it to better know who you are and how to approach things in the future.
