How to Declutter Your Home the Sustainable Way

How we get rid of stuff is as important as what we consume. Here is how to declutter your home the sustainable way to become more eco-conscious.

Cash for your car

Just because it’s time to declutter your house doesn’t mean that you need to throw out things or feel guilty during the process. There are many ways that you can declutter your home the sustainable way.

Fix It

By a show of hands, how many people have at least one broken item in their house that they haven’t gotten around to fixing? Now is the time to set aside an afternoon or a weekend to take care of all these tasks you’ve put off so you can use the item again. There isn’t a point in storing a broken item in your house, and it’s silly to go out and buy a new one when you already have one at home.

Digitize It

With modern-day conveniences, the need to save receipts or other paperwork is at an all-time low. You can easily take photos of any important mail you received and store them on your computer or in a cloud-based app. You won’t believe how much freeing up paper clutter can make a difference in your home’s ambiance.

Gift It

Most friends and family members appreciate receiving gifts, and some more than others! If you have perfectly functional things, but don’t have a use for them in your home anymore, send them away to their new home. A well-worn t-shirt can make a thoughtful gift, and it beats throwing away clothes and contributing to climate change.

Repurpose It

Unwanted items are raw materials for DIY projects for those who love crafting. For example, you could cut up old clothes and use them as cleaning rags. You can always turn a pile of unworn shirts into a new quilt if you know how to sew.

Donate or Sell It

When it is finally time to say goodbye for good, always look into donating or selling your stuff before throwing it away. If something is too heavy to carry, you could always post it on Craigslist’s “Free Stuff” section to find it a new home.

There are many ways that you can declutter your home the sustainable way. Find what works for you and your home while being creative!
