3 Important Tips to Consider When Traveling With Your Dog

Cash for your car

Thirty-seven percent of families say that vacations make them happy, and with summer finally here, more and more people are going to be taking trips and vacations. Already, more than eight million people fly each and every day. But it’s not just humans who get to enjoy the thrills of traveling — many humans bring their furry companions with them. But traveling with a dog isn’t always simple. So let’s take a look at a few tips to keep in mind if you’re traveling with your pup this summer.

Have a Travel Kit

No matter where you’re traveling to, you need to pack a few essential items for your dog. For starters, you should pack their food and bowl so you can feed them during their normal times no matter where you are. Additionally, make sure you always have a water bottle with you so you can keep your dog hydrated. Along with food and water, you should ensure to bring any medications your dog needs. Having a pet first-aid kit with you isn’t a bad idea either in the event of an accident. Your travel kit should also include poop bags and your dog’s favorite toy or item to keep. While you may be focused on packing your own belongings, don’t forget your dog’s belongings, too.

Make Sure They Have Enough Room

If you’re planning on driving with your dog, it’s important to make sure they have plenty of room to be comfortable in the vehicle. While Americans spend around 87 minutes in their cars every day, road trips can end up being a few hours. So before you load up the car, make sure there’s enough room for your pup — your dog should have enough room to sit, stand, and lay down as needed. For most dogs, a small car is going to be tight and could result in them feeling uncomfortable. So if possible, choose a larger vehicle for the trip. And don’t forget to lay down a blanket or make other changes to make your dog’s spot in the car nice and cozy.

Take Regular Breaks

When you’re traveling with your dog, it’s important to remember that they need potty and stretching breaks too — so keep their regular bathroom and exercise schedule in mind. Traveling can often result in a break in routine, but you should try your best to remember to take frequent breaks with your pup. Give them plenty of time to go to the bathroom, take them for a walk or jog, and allow them to relax as needed. This way, your dog won’t feel overwhelmed and tired and can fully enjoy the vacation just as much as you.

Traveling is more stressful for dogs than it is for humans because they’re not used to being stuck in cramped spaces for long periods of time. Taking frequent and regular breaks will help with the stress. If you’ll be on the road for several days, note how often your pet dog needs to eat. Normally, dogs need to eat at least twice a day, about 12 hours apart. They’ll feel nauseous if 12 hours lapse, and they have had nothing to eat. Make sure to pack delicious nutrient-rich dog food for your trip.

Traveling can be very stressful for your furry friend, so there could be some small complications regarding their health. That’s why it would be a good idea to invest in pet insurance in case there are any complications during your trip, having pet insurance will help in that situation.

With there being more than 75 million pet dogs in America, traveling with a dog isn’t uncommon. But if this is your first time traveling with your dog, or you need a refresher, keep these tips in mind to ensure your furry friend stays safe and happy the whole trip.
