While there are thousands of helpful applications for adults on the iPad and iPhone, now there is a revolutionary iPad application to promote children’s reading skills called Smarty Pants School.  It is a cool, kid-friendly new application for the iPad that helps parents evaluate and nurture children’s early reading skills in a fun, game-like fashion.

Based on the recommendations of the National Reading Panel, Smarty Pants School evaluates a child’s reading skills and then offers a carefully structured series of games and activities designed to bring out the smarty pants (and giggles) in any budding reader. Smarty Pants School assesses a child’s proficiency in five basic skill areas known to be the building blocks of reading success:

  • Letter knowledge
  • Phonemic awareness
  • Phonics
  • Deciphering regular words
  • Decoding irregular ‘sight’ words

The Smarty Pants Assessment report shows where a child excels relative to grade-level expectations and where they might benefit from some additional attention. And it suggests the additional Smarty Pants “classes” that are appropriate for that child’s particular strengths and weaknesses as well as links to more traditional, non-computer-based activities that parents can do with their children at home.

For more information about the methodology and the research behind Smarty Pants School, please see the Help and Advice section in the application or visit the website, .

And what’s also wonderful is that the Smarty Pants School app is free to download for the next few days.

Thank you all (parents or not) for helping spread the word and giving children the opportunity to become smarty pants!
