Stacy Malkan will let us in on a few of the reasons why this is so important to know about. These facts that she is raising awareness are very true, surprising and scary. She discusses the toxins we expose, not only ourselves, but our families to on a daily basis such as lead in lipstick, coal tar in shampoo, and carcinogens added to ‘organic’ products.

Malkan is not only the author of Not Just a Pretty Face; she is also a co-founder of Campaign for Safe Cosmetics.  This campaign is a national coalition of health and environmental groups working together to eliminate hazardous chemicals from personal care products. Stacy has formally been a journalist and newspaper publisher. She now works as a leading media strategist for national and international environmental health campaigns.

Some other people that will be attending to raise awareness are actress, producer, and star of Living with Ed, Rachelle Carson (wife of Ed Begley Jr.), Jolene Anello of Jurlisque skin care company, Josie Moran, founder of Josie Moran Cosmetics.

If this hasn’t caught your eye yet, here are a few more reasons why this is so important to educate yourself about:

• Lead in lipstick: Over 61% of lipsticks recently tested contained the deadly ingredient
• 1,4-Dioxane in baby shampoo: a form of ether and suspected of causing damage to the central nervous system, liver and kidneys
• Phthalates in a wide array of common items including baby lotions and powders, nail polish, and fragrances: Linked to infertility, birth defects, malformations of the male reproductive tract, and breast cancer
• Neurotoxin in mascara: a form of mercury
• Coal tar in shampoo
• Parabens in deodorant: Proved to be estrogenic and disrupt hormones
• A recent study revealed that over half of 100 popular “natural” and “organic” personal care products tested positive for the deadly carcinogen 1,4 dioxane. 1,4 dioaxne. These are also believed to be a kidney toxicant, neortoxicant, and respiratory toxicant. It has been found to be used as a byproduct of petrochemicals used in manufacturing in shampoos, body washes, lotions and other personal care products made by such leading “natural” companies as Kiss My Face, Alba, Seventh Generation, and Nature’s Gate.

And scary enough, there are many, many more…
