On July 21st , designer John Varvatos hosted iconic rocker, Glenn Hughes, better known as “The Voice of Rock“, for a private performance at his boutique at the Malibu Country Mart, to celebrate the release of Hughes’ bestselling book, “Glenn Hughes: The Autobiography – From Deep Purple to Black Country Communion.” The event was co-hosted by Paul Geary, Robert Knight, Jason Rouse, and Ben Silverman. Other celebrity guests attending included Patrick Dempsey, Josh Henderson, George Kotsiopoulos, David Charvet, Brooke Burke and Dean McDermott.
Filled to capacity, the guests were abuzz with the opportunity to hear the legendary rocker do a live performance.
Hughes delighted the houseful of high-profile attendees when he sang and played guitar, with all the purified essence from a life time of being one of the world’s greatest rockers, doing an electrifying 30-minute performance of his favorite songs from throughout his landmark career, which thrilled fans. He also entertained the crowd in between songs with his hilarious, irreverent sense of humor.
The Book
The bestseller, “Glenn Hughes: The Autobiography – From Deep Purple to Black Country Communion” is a brutally honest chronicle of Hughes’ long career as a rock bassist, vocalist and songwriter, from Boeing jet tour flights, to Black Sabbath performances, from cocaine psychosis to a jubilant comeback solo career and current association with English-American rock supergroup, Black Country Communion.
The Man
Glenn Hughes, British bassist, vocalist and songwriter, is most noted for his unique blend of hard rock, soul and funk and for his time with the band Deep Purple and a brief stint fronting Black Sabbath. Hughes continues to perform regularly as a solo artist in Europe, Japan and South America and with the group Black Country Communion. Their latest album, Live Over Europe, was recorded on the European leg of their debut tour.
David Charvet, his wife Brooke Burke and their children were mesmerized with Glenn Hughes’ performance, as was the entire crowd.
John Varvatos, a contemporary menswear high-fashion designer, who spent time in his career at both Polo Ralph Lauren and Calvin Klein, started his own clothing line in 2000 that now includes belts, handbags, footwear, eyewear, watches and fragrances. It is no coincidence that one of Varvatos’ many boutiques is in the space that housed the New York underground music club CBGB – his early love of rock spawned a lifelong interest in fashion.
