Kasil Collection: More Than Just Jeans

Cash for your car

If you are a designer jeans junkie, you know the tell-tale signs. You already have at least 4 pairs. You check out the jeans? back pocket on other girls? to see what the label is (c?mon, you know you?ve done it!). And of course, you are always on the look out for the next great pair, by a great new designer!

As a designer jeans junkie myself, the quality and fit of the jeans is of utmost importance to me, and I am always on the quest for THE perfect fitting pair of jeans. Like many others on the same quest, it can be difficult and time consuming to wade through all the different styles available, as designer jeans flood the market with various gimmicks, flash-in-the-pan trends, and racy advertising all in the effort to win you over.

On a recent trip to Fred Segal on Melrose, I half-heartedly browsed through their selection of the usual suspects in designer denim, when a special pair caught my eye. It was high quality denim in a rich deep indigo hue, with a ?diamond-v? embroidered on the back pockets. They were a straight-forward, classic pair of slim-fit jeans, and yet stylish and trendy. Snatching up my size, I was eager to try them on, and in the fitting room, I was pleased to see they fit and looked amazing. I had to have them!? I noticed that the brand was Kasil (pronounced ?castle?), and curiosity piqued, I decided to delve deeper into the brand and do a little research on this new designer.

Although David Lim started out had studing painting at the San Francisco Arts School, it was seemingly by happenstance that he would choose to start his own denim line. After traveling the U.S. working as a muralist, he had decided to move back to Los Angeles. He became an illustrator for costume designers for films such as ?The One? and ?Jet Li?. He naturally became interested in clothing design and joined his father?s custom tailoring business.

It was there that he honed his attention to detail and fit, became knowledgeable of different types of fabric, and developed the finely-tuned skill of customizing suits for his various celebrity clients. After playing with scraps of denim in his fathers? fabric collection, he soon found various ways to manipulate the fabric by sanding it down to fade the color, dying it to alter the hue, and painting it to add a whole different element.

?Denim is like painting in how it develops over time,? Lim explains. ?You can get different textures and feelings from it, and it all comes out of that deep indigo hue.?

After experimenting by creating denim pieces for himself, he soon began fielding requests and taking orders from new clients. Having a background in custom-tailoring helped pave the way for David to pay special notice to the feel and fit of the jeans, while keeping in mind comfort and style.

Given his artistic nature, it was inevitable that he also start to play with different colors of the threading, thus creating an inventive line of signature ?ocean washes?, inspired by the various colors of the sea.? Pacific wash, the lightest, corresponds to the Pacific Ocean where the water is lighter and warmer. Baltic wash is the basic indigo hue, corresponding to the waters near Europe where they are more of a medium blue. And Atlantic wash is the darkest, inspired by the Atlantic Ocean with a deeper blue. All the washes are hand-created, to ensure an original, one-of-a-kind look.

Originally launched in 2002, soon progressed from taking small orders from clients to becoming one of the hottest denim brands on the market.? Using only the highest quality ring-spun Italian denim for its construction and indigo dye for its richness and depth, and Japanese denim for its stretch construction and ?memory? – it stretches, but it goes back; it doesn?t ?blow out? like regular jeans do, for example, at the knees. With a strict eye for detail, he has already garnered quite the loyal celebrity following, including Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, Nick Lachey, Lindsey Lohan, and Fergie of the Black Eyed Peas, to name a few.
