Grooming and Fashion Tips for Older Men Getting Back Into Dating

Grooming and Fashion Tips for Older Men Getting Back Into Dating

Almost every man returning to dating after a long relationship makes the same error, which is to treat his appearance as roughly fine and focus on what to say. The order is backwards. Research by Janine Willis and Alexander Todorov found that a face produces a first impression in about 0.1 seconds, and that the judgment formed in that tenth of a second correlates closely with the judgment formed after unlimited viewing. Almost all of it is fixable in two weeks, and none of it requires becoming a different person.

Fit Before Anything Else

The largest available improvement for any man at any age is clothing that fits. It costs less than buying anything new. A jacket taken in at the waist and shortened at the sleeve by a tailor costs a fraction of the jacket itself, and it changes the shape of everything worn with it.

Body composition changes between 40 and 55 in ways that make a wardrobe quietly wrong. Shoulders narrow slightly, the waist moves, and pants that fit at 42 hang wrong at 54 without ever becoming obviously too small. The usual outcome is a man in clothes that are one size out in three places, looking sloppy to somebody who cannot say why.

Take four items to a tailor, starting with the best jacket, the two pairs of pants actually worn, one shirt and one coat. The bill will be under the cost of a mediocre dinner and the result outperforms anything bought new at the same price.

What a tailor cannot fix is worth knowing before spending anything. Shoulders are structural, so a jacket that is wrong across the shoulders is wrong permanently. Everything below that, including sleeves, waist, leg length and taper, is adjustable within an inch or two. Buy for the shoulders and have the rest altered.

The Haircut Budget

A haircut has a bigger effect at 55 than at 30, because the hairline and the density have both moved. The same cut that worked for 20 years is often the specific thing making a man look older than he is.

Dyeing gray hair is usually a mistake that everybody else can see. Gray kept short, kept clean and cut by somebody who looks at face shape looks deliberate. Gray grown long over a receding front looks like neglect. Separating the two costs about $40 every three weeks instead of $18 every eight.

Ear hair, nose hair and eyebrow growth all accelerate after 50, and all three are invisible to the man they belong to and highly visible to everyone sitting across from him. A trimmer costs about $25 and takes two minutes a week.

Skin After 50

The reality of dating in your 50s is that the other person is also in their fifties and knows exactly what a face that age looks like. What they can read is how much maintenance goes into it, and maintenance shows on skin before it shows anywhere else.

Collagen production falls by roughly 1% a year from 30, so a 55 year old has lost around a quarter of it. Oil production drops sharply too, by around 30% in men past 60, which is why skin that was greasy at 25 is tight and flaking at 55. The visible result is dullness rather than wrinkles.

The routine that fixes most of it has three steps and takes under two minutes. Wash with something that is not bar soap, moisturize morning and night, and wear sunscreen on the face every day the sun is up, which is the one measure shown in trials to slow skin aging. Retinol at night is worth adding after a month if the first three steps have become automatic. Anything more elaborate will be abandoned by week three.

Hands and neck are the two areas men skip. Hands sit on the table for the whole of a meal and get looked at more than most men assume, so short clean nails and a moisturizer kept by the kitchen sink cover the whole problem. The neck ages faster than the face because almost nobody puts sunscreen on it, and the mismatch between a maintained face and an unmaintained neck is more noticeable than either would be alone.

Teeth and Glasses

Teeth age visibly and nobody mentions it. Enamel thins with age and tooth discoloration follows, since coffee and red wine stain what is left, and the effect accumulates so slowly that the owner never notices. A hygienist appointment costs little and removes several years. Whitening beyond that produces the opposite problem, since teeth brighter than the whites of the eyes look wrong on anybody over 40.

Glasses do more visible work than any other single item here. A frame bought in 2011 dates a face more precisely than any garment, and most men keep frames until the prescription changes rather than until the style does. Current frames on an otherwise unchanged man produce a strong effect for around $200, and an optician will say honestly which shapes suit a face if asked directly.

Clothing for the First Meeting

Dress one step above the venue and stop there. A jacket over a plain shirt works in almost every room a first meeting happens in, and it gives somewhere to put a phone and a wallet.

Three things do more damage than the rest combined. Shoes that are scuffed or worn out undo everything above them, because shoes get checked early and stand in for general standards. Visible logos look younger than the man wearing them. Clothing bought to look 35 announces the exact age anxiety it was meant to hide.

Color is worth one sentence. Skin loses contrast with age, so black near the face drains most men over 50, while mid-blues and warm grays lift the same face.

Whatever gets chosen should have been worn once already, on an ordinary evening, before the date. New clothes produce fidgeting, which is visible from across a table.

Scent and Restraint

Aftershave should be detectable at conversational distance and nowhere else. The sense of smell declines steadily after 50, which is why the strongest fragrance in any room is usually worn by the oldest man in it. Two sprays, applied to the chest rather than the neck, is the whole rule.

The same restraint applies across every category here. The aim is a man who looks like himself on a good day, which is a low bar that most men pass the moment they stop ignoring it.

Two Weeks of Attention

The damage from skipping all this arrives indirectly. Poor presentation signals low investment, and low investment signals a man still living inside the end of his last relationship. That ends things after two dates, and conversation does not correct it, because the person across the table has already filed the impression and will interpret the evening to fit. Run it the other way and two weeks of attention removes about a decade of apparent age, and more usefully it produces the assumption that this is a man whose life is in order. That assumption does more for a second date than anything said over the first one.
