Changes in digestion, reduced stomach acid, medications, decreased food intake and less efficient nutrient absorption can all contribute to nutritional gaps.

 

Vitamins and minerals are involved in hundreds of processes throughout the body, including cellular energy production, immune function, DNA maintenance, cardiovascular function, cognition and bone health. So the issue is not simply whether someone consumes enough vitamin C to avoid scurvy or enough vitamin D to prevent a severe deficiency. The larger question is whether the body consistently receives enough of the nutrients it needs to perform those everyday biological functions effectively.

Why the Form of a Vitamin Matters

A multivitamin label can be deceptive in its simplicity. Two products may list many of the same vitamins and minerals while delivering them in substantially different forms.

That is where terms such as bioavailable nutrients, activated vitamins and chelated minerals become important.

Bioavailability refers to how readily a nutrient can be absorbed and utilized by the body. Activated B vitamins are provided in forms the body can use more directly. Primal Multi™, for example, contains methylated folate, or 5-MTHF, rather than conventional folic acid. Chelated minerals are attached to amino acids, which can help with absorption and may also make them gentler on the digestive system.

Primal Multi™ also extends beyond traditional vitamins and minerals with a range of phytonutrients. Q&A With Dr. David Brady

LA’s the Place: A new three-year clinical trial suggests that taking a daily multivitamin may help support heart health while helping older adults maintain their strength and mobility. What stands out to you about these findings, and what do they add to what we already know about healthy aging?

Dr. David Brady: While I can’t comment on the specific findings of that new study without reviewing the trial itself, the overall concept fits well with what we’ve been learning over the past years. We know that as we age, our nutritional needs don’t decrease, they actually increase. At the same time, many older adults consume fewer nutrient-dense foods, absorb nutrients less efficiently due to reduced digestive function, and often take medications that can affect nutrient status.

Research has shown that vitamins and minerals do much more than simply prevent deficiency conditions. They support hundreds of biochemical processes involved in energy production, immune function, DNA repair, brain health, cardiovascular health, and maintaining healthy cells throughout the body. Scientists have even proposed that when nutrient intake is less than optimal, the body may prioritize short-term survival over long-term maintenance, potentially contributing to aging and chronic disease over time.

A high-quality multivitamin shouldn’t replace a healthy diet, but it can help fill nutritional gaps and provide a foundation that supports healthy aging alongside good nutrition and lifestyle habits.

LATP: A lot of people assume a multivitamin is a multivitamin. What makes Primal Multi™ different from the products someone might grab off the shelf at a grocery store or big-box retailer?

Dr. Brady: Not all multivitamins are created equally. The ingredient list may look similar at first glance, but the forms of the nutrients can be very different.

Primal Multi™ was designed to provide nutrients in forms the body can readily utilize. Instead of focusing only on meeting the Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDAs), the goal was to create a comprehensive formula that supports optimal physiological function using highly bioavailable vitamins and minerals, while also including beneficial plant compounds that are commonly missing from modern diets.

Our ancestors consumed a much wider variety of colorful plant foods and naturally occurring phytonutrients than most people eat today. Those compounds work alongside vitamins and minerals to make them even more bioavailable and to support overall health.

LATP: We hear terms like “bioavailable nutrients,” “activated B vitamins,” and “chelated minerals” all the time, but most people don’t really know what those mean. Can you explain them in simple terms, and why they’re important when choosing a multivitamin?

Dr. Brady: Absolutely.

Nutrients are like building materials. It’s not enough for the materials to simply show up, they have to be in a form that can actually be used. Think about trying to fit a square peg in a round hole. The square peg needs to be in a different form to be able to fit.

Bioavailable nutrients are nutrients that your body can absorb and utilize more efficiently.

Activated B vitamins are forms that are already converted into the forms your cells use. For example, instead of folic acid, Primal Multi™ contains methylated folate (5-MTHF), which is the biologically active form. This can be especially important if some people have genetic differences that reduce their ability to efficiently convert folic acid into its active form.

Chelated minerals are minerals that are attached to amino acids. This helps protect them as they move through the digestive system and often improves absorption while being gentler on the stomach.

Choosing better forms of nutrients helps maximize every capsule.

LATP: As we get older, are there certain vitamins and minerals that people tend to become deficient in? What kinds of health issues can those deficiencies contribute to over time?

Dr. Brady: Yes. As we age, deficiencies or insufficiencies become very common for quite a few nutrients, including vitamin D, vitamin B12 and other B vitamins, vitamin K, vitamin A, magnesium, choline, vitamin C (as people can not synthesize it), and others. This happens for many reasons, including reduced food intake, lower stomach acid (even if people think it is high), changes in digestion, medications, and other factors in the digestive tract that make nutrient absorption less efficient.

Over time, inadequate nutrient intake may contribute to fatigue, reduced energy production, impaired immune function, decreased bone health, cognitive changes, reduced cardiovascular health, and poorer cellular maintenance.

The goal isn’t just avoiding diseases like scurvy or rickets, but to allow the body to function optimally for healthier aging, maintain normal cellular function, and promote long-term wellness.

LATP: Primal Multi™ includes activated B vitamins, methylated folate, chelated minerals, vitamins K1 and K2, along with ingredients like lutein, lycopene, resveratrol, quercetin, and other plant phytonutrients. What was the thinking behind putting all of those ingredients together in one formula?

Dr. Brady: The idea was to create a formula that reflects how nutrition works in real life.

Vitamins and minerals don’t work in isolation. They function together in numerous interconnected biochemical pathways. At the same time, foods naturally contain many beneficial compounds beyond vitamins and minerals. Colorful fruits and vegetables provide phytonutrients such as carotenoids, flavonoids, and polyphenols that help support healthy cells and protect against oxidative stress.

For example, lutein and zeaxanthin help support eye and cognitive health. Lycopene has been studied for its antioxidant properties. Citrus flavonoids such as hesperidin, grape polyphenols like resveratrol, and other plant compounds have demonstrated antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity in research.

Rather than viewing nutrition as isolated ingredients, Primal Multi™ was designed around the idea that nutrients work together as part of a larger and much broader nutrient network.

LATP: Premium multivitamins often cost more than standard formulas. From your perspective, what is someone actually getting for that extra investment, and why isn’t every multivitamin created equal?

Dr. Brady: A premium multivitamin isn’t simply about having more ingredients, it’s about using better ingredients: better sources and forms, as we discussed earlier.

Higher-quality formulations often use more bioavailable nutrient forms like activated vitamins, chelated minerals, avoid unnecessary fillers, and incorporate other helpful and “collaborative” compounds that are generally absent from conventional multivitamins.

Such formulations are more expensive to manufacture, but the extra ingredients are included because the goal is to support absorption and biological function, not simply to create an impressive label.
