A Conscience-Driven Career
While his public reputation centers on big deals and big names, Leigh Steinberg’s work behind the scenes tells a deeper story. Back in the 1990s, long before concussions became a hot-button issue, he was one of the only agents speaking out. After seeing the long-term damage caused by head injuries in his own clients, Steinberg made it a personal mission to change the industry.
That commitment led to the launch of the Leigh Steinberg Foundation, which focuses on concussion education, research, and treatment access, especially for low-income athletes and underserved communities. For decades, he’s hosted medical conferences and brought top neurologists together to tackle the growing crisis around CTE and traumatic brain injury in sports.
“I couldn’t sit back and keep doing business as usual,” he has said. “These athletes were putting their lives on the line, and someone had to speak up.”
Why Vegas, Why Now
Las Vegas has become a major hub for sports, hosting everything from the Super Bowl to major UFC events. For Steinberg, it’s the perfect place to train the next generation of leaders who will shape the future of sports, with ethics, empathy, and business acumen.
Attendees won’t just leave with insight into contracts and compliance. They’ll walk away with a model for what a principled sports agent looks like—one who champions the well-being of their clients both on and off the field.
For anyone looking to break into sports or take their career to the next level, July 8 in Las Vegas isn’t just an event, it’s a rare chance to learn from a true industry pioneer who’s still pushing the game forward.
Lee gave us more details:
LA’s The Place: You’re bringing your Agent Academy back to Las Vegas this July. What can attendees expect to gain from the experience that they won’t find in a textbook or online course?
Leigh Steinberg: We transform attendees into educated sports professionals by equipping them with essential life and business skills often missing from traditional degrees in Law, Sport Management, or Business. Our program begins with the powerful idea that sports can drive social change, as athletes act as role models. We teach our participants to understand others’ motivations, offering a competitive edge in negotiation and client relationships. Our curriculum includes in-depth exploration of the competitive recruiting landscape and the strategic use of social media for personal and client branding. Moreover, we guide our students on how to establish charitable foundations, empowering athletes to leverage their influence for societal good.
LATP: You’ve been a powerful voice in raising awareness about concussions, long before it became a national issue. What led you to start the Leigh Steinberg Foundation?
Steinberg: In the 1980s, I experienced a crisis of conscience as I represented half of the starting quarterbacks in the NFL, witnessing them repeatedly suffer head injuries. Driven by a deep sense of responsibility for athletes’ long-term health, I was compelled to create a foundation aimed at spreading awareness and ensuring that athletes are not on a path toward dementia or other traumatic brain disorders. Our mission also includes funding research and treatment for the prevention of these conditions.
LATP: What’s the biggest misconception about what sports agents actually do? The biggest misconception about sports agents is that they prioritize their earnings above everything else. In reality, agents have a genuine interest in the welfare of their clients and the integrity of sports as a whole.
Steinberg: The first question an agent asks a client upon entering our office is about the skills they possess beyond their athletic abilities and their aspirations for life after their playing career. By developing a strong interpersonal relationship with the athlete, we can help them focus on networking and building a successful second career.
