Starting November 5th, Q4 Active is launching Tai Chi Prime, a six-week, evidence-based class series designed to help seniors reduce their risk of falls and improve overall well-being. Combining ancient tai chi principles with modern fall-prevention strategies, Tai Chi Prime has been proven to boost balance, mobility, strength, and cognitive function. This course is ideal for seniors who want a supportive and effective way to stay active and independent.
What to Expect in Tai Chi Prime
Each 90-minute session, held twice a week, is packed with interactive components designed to guide seniors through tai chi and qi gong basics. Under the expert coaching of Dr. Susan Layfield—a physical therapist and certified tai chi instructor—participants gain hands-on guidance and structured practice routines to reinforce safety and technique. Dr. Layfield’s approach is grounded in the latest research, offering modifications to support seniors at every level of mobility and experience.
The course includes both in-class instruction and at-home resources to maintain momentum. In addition to in-person guidance, participants receive a DVD and access to a library of exercises. These resources are geared toward reinforcing balance, coordination, and flexibility through simple moves that can be incorporated into everyday activities, like practicing the Fab Four Basic Moves for Balance while brewing coffee or washing dishes. This makes staying active at home both achievable and enjoyable.
Safety First: Tai Chi Prime’s Inclusive Approach
A key feature of Tai Chi Prime is its inclusivity. A chair is available during class, providing additional support for those who may feel uncertain on their feet. Whether participants need assistance with leg strength, posture, or stability, the setup allows everyone to engage fully and safely. This thoughtful accommodation enables seniors to build confidence while focusing on steady, gradual improvement.
Community and Connection: More Than Just a Class
Tai Chi Prime is not only about movement; it also fosters community. The class integrates diverse teaching methods, including movement instruction, group discussions, qi gong, and informal tea breaks. These elements allow participants to connect, share experiences, and support one another. This combination of physical practice and social interaction enriches the learning experience, making it enjoyable as well as beneficial for health.
