Practice Your Fundamentals

The biggest thing you need to do to become a better chef is simply practicing your cooking fundamentals. These fundamentals are the foundation for all your skills going forward. Neglecting them will only hurt you. Take chopping skills, for example. You want to cut everything quickly, but in addition to quickness, you should also think about cutting everything in a uniform size. When you’re cooking and sautéing different foods, the size of the ingredients can make a big difference.

In addition to having these ingredients, depending on the bread you’re making, you’ll also need a quality oven.

Then, after the bread is ready, you need to cut it. Many tend to overlook this part of the process and will use any old knife, but the type and quality of the knife is crucial. Good equipment and ingredients are only second in importance to your skills as a chef.

In addition to practicing your fundamentals and getting the right equipment and ingredients, you need to go outside the box. While you can create quality dishes you’ve made for years, you should step outside of your comfort zone so that you can learn more about the culinary world.

For example, if you’re never really made any Chinese food, consider going to the market and working with some ingredients and foods you’ve never worked with before. But when you try something new like this, you could discover a new dish or ingredient that quickly becomes a staple in your home.

These are some of the most effective ways you can become a better chef at home, but they won’t automatically make you better. It’s still going to be a lengthy process, and you’ll make mistakes. However, with the right determination and time, you’ll become the chef you’ve always wanted to be.
