There are five standard Jeep Wrangler configurations in 2023—Sport, Rubicon, Sahara, Sport RHD, and Rubicon 392—as well as multiple limited edition models. Each configuration includes a standard engine option, while some offer various upgrades. Check out this guide to compare engine options for the 2023 Jeep Wrangler and determine which motor best suits your needs.

3.6L Penastar V6

The ever-dependable 3.6L Penastar V6 engine is the standard option for the more affordable Jeep Wrangler 2023 configurations. However, this “standard” engine is no slouch—it boasts 285 horsepower, 260 pounds per foot of torque, and a 3,500-pound towing capacity. Plus, Jeep claims its V6 gets 20–24 miles per gallon, making it quite the energy-efficient 4×4 configuration. As the most affordable option on this list, you can’t go wrong with a 3.6L V6, especially if you enjoy off-roading excursions.

2.0L Turbo Inline 4

The 2.0L Turbo Inline 4 engine is an available upgrade for most models, although it is standard for the Sahara and Sport RHD configurations. Since this engine features fewer pistons, it only pumps out around 270 horsepower. However, it does boast 295 pounds per foot of torque and offers drivers more access to low-end torque. This engine is ideal for serious off-roading enthusiasts rather than casual drivers, but it’s still suitable for normal driving activities and even gets an additional two miles per gallon compared to the 3.6L Penastar V6.

3.0L EcoDiesel V6

Are you a fan of diesel engine cars? If so, 2023 is the last year you can purchase a diesel Wrangler from the US market before the brand shuts down production. The 3.0L EcoDiesel V6 is an available upgrade for some Wrangler models and is standard in the limited edition Rubicon FarOut. With 260 horsepower and over 440 pounds per foot of torque, the EcoDiesel engine is ideal for casual drivers and off-roaders alike. Plus, this highly efficient motor gets 22–29 miles per gallon.

6.4L HEMI® V8 (Rubicon 392)

The 6.4L Hemi® V8 is exclusive to Jeep’s most capable off-roading Wrangler, the Rubicon 392. This engine is the perfect blend of raw power and lightning speed, providing over 470 horsepower and 470 pounds per foot of torque! The robust drivetrain is less energy efficient, only getting 13–17 miles per gallon. While the Rubicon 392 is a little pricy at $82,495, it is also the only V8 Wrangler for 2023. If you’re a passionate off-roading enthusiast who enjoys intense overlanding and rock-crawling activities, there isn’t a better engine option on the market.

Comparing the various engine options for the 2023 Jeep Wrangler can help you make the ideal purchase relative to your specific needs. Ensuring your 4×4 has a capable and strong engine is important when preparing your Jeep for road trips and off-roading adventures.
