Nostalgia can be a powerful tool in shaping fashion and beauty trends. Popular trends in the 70s like tie-dyed shirts and bell bottoms were in fashion again in 2020, while denim skirts and dresses were worn by fashionable LA girls in 2021. Similarly, with California native Bella Hadid at the forefront of the Y2K fashion trend, the Y2K resurgence is still at full force this year. It’s no wonder the hashtag #Y2K has gained almost 5 billion views on Tiktok. This resurgence does not stop at fashion, as make-up trends are also following suit. Here are some make-up trends to look out for in LA.

Bling is In

Bedazzling is back in 2022, but this time, it’s not just for your accessories, but for your face, too. Crystal eye make-up is one of the biggest trends in makeup this year. With celebrities like Sydney Sweeney and Dua Lipa donning crystal eye-make up, searches for this term increased by 110%. It’s understandable as to why this trend is quite loved – using crystal make-up allows you to emphasize your eyes and adds a bit more interest to your overall look.

However, this trend does require using adhesive on your face, so you need to be careful when it comes to removing crystals you used for your make-up. Otherwise, you might end up clogging your pores, which can result in acne, according to Los Angeles dermatology specialists. As such, it would be ideal to use the type of make-up remover that can melt even the most stubborn makeup but won’t irritate your skin.

Barely There Brows

If you lived through the 90s, you might be aware of how people back then were obsessed with hair removal, especially when it comes to hair on the face. Over-plucking or bleaching your eyebrows was the thing to do, a trend popular even among celebrities like Jessica Alba and Kate Moss.

This trend is back, with celebrities like Bella Hadid and Lizzo seen sporting either skinny or bleached brows. You don’t need to over tweeze your brows to follow this trend, though. Today’s thin brows are more textured and dense, so it mostly requires using makeup, such as tinted brow gels and eyebrow pencils. Besides, “Eyebrow Queen” Anastasia Soare, CEO of Anastasia Beverly Hills whose clientele includes Kim Kardashian and Jennifer Lopez, says that no matter what shape you want for your brows, what’s important is shape and symmetry.

All Things Bold and Bright

The 90s were big on all things colorful, shiny, and bold. We’ve established this with bedazzling, but the popularity of the glitter makeup and the ever present blue eye shadow is also worth remembering. These used to get a lot of bad rap because the makeup available back then were mostly awkward-looking and frosty. Fortunately, makeup today comes in more colors and textures, so glitter and blue eye shadow are more in-style this time around. Bolder and brighter colors are on trend, too, from neon eyeshadows to dramatic colored eye-liners. What comes to mind immediately are the looks by Los Angeles-born MUA Doniella Davy for the TV show “Euphoria.” Donning bold colors allows you to effortlessly amp up your look.

We have more beauty tools at our disposal now, so we are able to revisit old trends in a safer and more stylish manner. As older trends resurface, fashion and make-up will only get more exciting from here on out.
