Rustic style embraces all things natural and rugged. I love doing rustic-style projects because they’re perfect for turning something old into something new. My favorite way to incorporate a rustic aesthetic is through my outdoor patio. Redesigning my patio was easy, and with a little bit of elbow grease, you can do it, too! Here are my favorite tips for creating a rustic style outdoor patio.

Get Creative With Lighting

Lighting is essential to setting the right kind of mood for your space. The good thing about rustic style is that you can use all types of materials to create your perfect patio. For me, the more I can repurpose, the better.

I like using mason jars, Edison bulbs, and reclaimed wood to make one-of-a-kind light fixtures that are staples for my outdoor patio. Also, making string lights with distressed bulbs can bring some much-needed coziness to your outdoor area.

Add Comfy Seating

Your patio should be as stylish as it is comfortable. Wooden furniture is my go-to for rustic style, but the options are literally endless. Lean into the “rugged” look by destressing your repurposed furniture or using materials like copper and tin for furniture frames.

Don’t forget to find some comfy cushions to go with your new seating area, or you can even make some of your own! You can upcycle old benches, tables, and chairs for a natural look that you will love and your guests won’t stop talking about.

Use Natural Materials

Upcycling doesn’t mean using old and drabby materials. You can create a perfect rustic style patio with great supplies that won’t hurt the environment or your wallet. Even though hardwoods like teak and oak are the best natural woods for outdoor furniture, cedar is my favorite because it is lightweight, bug-resistant, and smells amazing.

Neutral colors, brick, and burlap can easily create the rustic feel that you’re looking for. Think “earthy” and “raw” when you look for your rustic inspiration.

These tips for creating a rustic style outdoor patio offer fun ways to renovate your outdoor space effortlessly. Reusing natural materials for your patio will help you stay on trend while keeping your carbon footprint low.
