Even though Chicago is less renowned compared to other larger cities in the country such as Los Angeles and New York, there is no denying the beauty and appeal of the Windy City. Why is it referred to as the Windy City? The name says it all; owing to the cold gusts of wind that blow from Lake Michigan, Chicago is a wonderful city to visit no matter what time of year you are visiting.

Whether you want to spend your time outdoors hiking or exploring the various nature trails available or perhaps you would much rather relax and dine your vacation away, there is something for everyone in the Windy City. In the summer, and into the fall, Chicago attracts thousands of tourists looking to relax on the city’s beautiful beaches.

Chicago’s Rich Musical History

It’s easy to see why I am obsessed with Chicago. Often referred to by many names, Chicago has a rich musical history of jazz and blues. This city that introduced the Blues Brothers to the world has one of the most exciting music scenes in the country. The Windy City has birthed new and exciting musical genres such as Chicago-style blues and house gospel.

Chicago has no shortage of music venues for music lovers. Just travel uptown where you will find a culturally diverse location that has been serving as the city’s entertainment hotspot since the 20s. Uptown is home to some of the most popular venues in the city including some of the oldest jazz clubs in the country. For example, the Byline Bank Aragon Ballroom, which has been in existence since 1926 has one of the most elaborate stages in the city.

If you prefer indie music, the place to be is Wicker Park, which is a harbor for the city’s artists and musicians. Here, you will get a chance to discover some of the most talented undiscovered acts for a truly magical musical experience. One of the most popular spots in Wicker Park is Subterranean, which is a 2-story venue that is known for its cabaret-style performances.

There is also never a shortage of fun festivals all over the city with some of the most popular ones being ‘Lollapalooza’, as well as the 4-day music festival that takes place every year. In Millennium Park, several events and outdoor concerts are hosted each summer.

The pandemic has certainly put a damper on outdoor events such as concerts all over the country.  However, as more and more people continue to receive their vaccine shots, Chicago’s music scene should be up and running like it never halted.

Chicago Has Some of the Most Instagrammable Spots in the Country

From corner to corner, Chicago is full of picturesque settings that will light up your social media posts. Indeed, even Cool Things Chicago agrees that the Windy City has some of the most Instagrammable spots in the country. Boasting magnificent views at every turn, the city of Chicago has a diverse landscape with some of the most beautifully designed buildings in the world.

As such, you will be spoiled for choice when it comes to amazing settings for your photographs.  The skyscraper cityscape that Chicago boasts overlooks the glittering nearby Lake Michigan which means that you can get your shots easily on land or water. When in Chicago, you will appreciate the magnificent Art Deco buildings that are as old as the city itself.

If you are looking for a more nature-based backdrop, you will be treated to green havens all over the city such as Millennium Park. Millennium Park is home to several popular spots that are ideal for anyone looking to capture special moments. However, one of the most remarkable areas in Millennium Park is where you will find Anish Kapoor’s Bean, also commonly referred to as Cloud Gate.

Some of the most beautiful buildings in the city include the Water Tower, the Chicago Tribune, as well as the John Hancock Observatory. If you want a full view of the city, as well as some of the neighboring states, the best place to go would be the Willis Tower, which stands as the 2nd tallest skyscraper in the country. The Willis Tower has a sky deck situated on the 103rf floor that will deliver the most majestic views of the skyline that you have ever seen.

Chicago’s Art and Culture

The Loop, which is the economic and commercial hub of the city, is where you are likely to find most of the action taking place in the Windy City. The Loop is characterized by historic streets and museums that you cannot help but explore.

Millennium Park also boasts some of the most unique masterpieces in the city namely the Crown Fountain, which is an interactive piece that was created by Spanish artist Plensa. This fountain attracts thousands of arriving visitors from all corners of the world. A must-see for art lovers that are visiting is the Art Institute of Chicago, which is also the 2nd largest museum in the country.

Situated in Grant Park, the Art Institute of Chicago is home to all manner of art collections from all parts of the globe. Whether you fancy staring at a Monet or Van Gogh painting, there is something from almost all art periods in the Art Institute of Chicago.

The Culinary Scene

What’s a trip to Chicago if you do not indulge in some of the cuisines that the city has to offer? Ever since the city lifted the pandemic restriction on bars and restaurants, the city’s dining scene has been thriving. Chicago offers visitors a sophisticated dining scene that is seldom seen in other parts of the country.

If you are keen on sampling some of the best steaks, you will be happy to know that Chicago remains the meatpacking capital of the country. As such, there is an overabundance of grass-fed and dry-aged steaks from some of the most highly recommended Steakhouses in the country.

But if you are feeling a little more casual, you cannot leave Chicago without getting a taste of the deep-dish pizza. Whether you feel like a Neapolitan or would like to try the famous grandma slices, you will not be disappointed by the pizza in Chicago.

Final Thoughts

These are just a few of the many wonderful reasons why Chicago is one of my favorite destinations to visit. If you ever find yourself in the Windy City, these are just a few of the things you have to look forward to.
