Fabric painting can be a unique hobby or a full-time profession. Aside from the fact that it’s a lot more fun than paper crafts and is practical, fabric painting can be done on any fabric, even knit.

Paint pens and fabric markers also come in an incredible range of colors with metallic or glittery effects. You can use these painted fabrics to make a quilt top, like a shirt or jacket, decorate on the back of a chair, or make a whole outfit.

But here lies the problem. You may be new to fabric painting and have no idea where to start and how to go about things.

Worry not, we’re here to help! Here are some helpful tips for fabric painting with fabric markers or paint pens. Have a look.

More About a Fabric Marker And Pen

Fabric markers are permanent colors (dye or paint, or ink) that can’t be washed out or fade with washing. While regular markers labeled as “permanent” won’t wash out, they don’t have as many colors as fabric markers.

Quilters often use them to mark lines on their fabric before cutting it. Fabric markers come in a variety of point sizes. There exist a variety of makers and brands, too.

Different Sizes

You should not be worried about making designs of different sizes with the same pen. Fabric markers come in various sizes. They range from thin to thick to even brush-style tips.

If you want to make a thin line, you should use the finest tip available.

Avoid pressing the tip for getting a wider line. This will damage your marker.

Instead of that, you should tilt the tip of your marker. This will create a line from the edge of your marker.

Selection of the Fabric

The type of fabric you deal with can also affect the functional ability of the fabric marker.

Coarse-grained fabrics are relatively inexpensive and still quite durable. Fabric markers work exceptionally well on dense materials, like fleece, cotton, or canvas. Coarse-grained fabrics include heavy twill, denim, corduroy, canvas, gabardine fabric, and many more.

You should be very careful and avoid stopping or pausing while the tip of your marler is resting on your fabric. This will prevent the color from bleeding.

Areas of Color

Fabric markers are ideal for coloring in a large area, such as a fabric tablecloth or placemats made from mismatched household items.

Still, you can’t use them with more intricate things like clothes or household goods because they won’t work well on smaller areas, such as textiles or small pieces of furniture.

Stenciling

Did you know that fabric markers work well with stencils?

To outline, you should run the tip of the marker with the edge of your stencil. Keep the pen upright the whole time. This will prevent it from spilling underneath.

You can add color to your design by keeping the stencil in place or by removing it. Keeping the stencil in place while adding color will prevent the color from going out of the edge.

Stamping

Fabric markers can be used for printing on a fabric with a rubber stamp or any other non-absorbent, flattened item.

It is effortless to use it. All you need to do is just run the fabric marker all over the stamp. Then, you need to turn over the stamp, put it on the fabric, and press it firmly. The color will come off of the stamp on the fabric.
