What To Do After a Hit-and-Run Accident
Cash for your car

Imagine that you’re leaving a convenience store and walking to your car when all of a sudden, a car hits you and knocks you off your feet. You’re not too badly hurt, but you’re in a bit of a daze and not even entirely sure what’s going on. You are the victim of a hit-and-run and not quite sure what you should do next. While this scenario isn’t likely, it’s a good idea to be prepared for what you should do in case you or someone you know is involved in one. That’s why we’ve compiled a list of steps on what to do after a hit-and-run accident.

Remember Car Info

If the hit was hard enough, this step might not be feasible. You could be in too much pain or possibly even unconscious after getting struck by the car. Regardless, it’s crucial to inform the cops of anything that might help their investigation once they arrive. Telling them that you saw a flash of red, or you saw a car driver acting suspiciously before the accident can be just the information they need to track the driver down.

If you’re able to, try to memorize and write down the car’s license plate, make and model, color, or even what the driver looks like. The more of these details you can take note of, the more likely the police will catch them.

Assess Your Injuries

After the split seconds of trying to identify the car, it’s time to figure out what kind of injuries you’ve sustained. Don’t move around too much in case there is something internally wrong with you, but try to determine if you have any broken bones or are bleeding profusely. If things aren’t looking good, try to call out for help. Hopefully, someone will come to your rescue and do what they can to keep you safe.

Call 911

By far, the most important thing to do after a hit-and-run accident is to call 911. If a witness to the crime has come over to help you, have them do it for you. If you’re all alone, try your best to do it yourself. Even if all you’re able to do is dial the number, help will be on the way shortly. Once the police arrive, tell them what happened and all the details that you remember from step one.

Contact Your Insurance

Once you’re stable and the police are on the case, take the time to call your insurance company. It’s vital to get the event on the record in case the driver is never found. If your insurance is comprehensive enough, you might even be covered.

Find a Personal Injury Lawyer

If the driver gets away and you’re not covered by insurance, then it’s time to get into contact with a personal injury lawyer. If you already have one, you’re set, but if you don’t, you’ll need to take the time to find a well-qualified one. Once you have done so, consult with them to determine if there’s a way to be compensated for your injuries and ensure that your rights are protected.
