How To Make Moving Less of a Hassle

Moving isn’t an activity that anyone likes doing. On the other hand, almost everyone will need to move at some point. Packing up an entire life and home can be a challenge, and moving it is even more difficult, but you can take some steps to make the process less painful. We’re going to show you how to make moving less of a hassle so you don’t have to dread the next time you set up shop somewhere new.

Take Accurate Measurements

Dealing with furniture is bad enough on its own. Dealing with furniture after you figured out the hard way that it won’t fit through a doorway is another nightmare entirely. Measuring everything out beforehand will save you a lot of time and hassle. You’ll want to measure:

  • Doors and entryways
  • Floor space for larger furniture
  • Stairway width
  • Hallway dimensions if you’re in a larger building
  • Elevator dimensions if you’ll use one

Pack as Early as Possible

The day of your move will come faster than you think. You’ll want to have everything ready to go long before that day. The more you procrastinate and put off packing until later, the more rushed and frantic your packing will be. Give yourself a little leeway by packing non-essentials as early as possible. It will give you more time to deal with the larger, more unwieldy items you plan to move. If you’re planning to hire a professional moving company to help you, make sure to reach out to them as early as possible.

Declutter as You Pack

Everyone’s got a pile full of junk that doesn’t need to go with them when they move. Use the packing process as an opportunity to declutter your life a little bit. Make separate spaces or boxes for things you plan to donate, sell, or throw away. Getting rid of these things now will make moving in a lot less stressful.

Label Your Boxes

One of the best ways to make moving less of a hassle is to make sure everything you pack up has a label to go with it. Unpacking can be just as troublesome as packing, so anything you can do to speed through the process is helpful. Try to be detailed with your labels—don’t just write the word “kitchen” and think you’ll remember everything that went inside that box.

Don’t Do It Alone

Packing, moving, and unpacking can be a dull affair if you’re doing it all by yourself. It also makes the tasks much more difficult. If you’re able, enlist friends and family to help you move. Just be ready to pay them back when it’s their turn! If your friends or family can’t help, think about investing in a moving company to make the process that much easier on yourself. You’ll be glad you did when it comes time to move that couch or mattress.
