Hollywood appears to be crawling with lavish parties, drugs, and alcohol, but not for all celebrities. These sober celebrities are challenging the social stigma.

When people think of celebrities they picture fast cars, lavish parties, expensive alcohol, designer drugs, and no rules. An absolute life of luxury. 

This social stigma of a party lifestyle is rampant in the Hollywood scene. It’s what the tabloids look for and constantly publish, but this isn’t the norm.

Here are 27 sober celebrities you may or may not know are standing up against and challenging the party stigma attached to the Hollywood scene.

  1. Elton John

This iconic celebrity musician recently celebrated an absolute milestone of 30 years of sobriety in July 2020. He accredited his ability to get to this point to ask for help when he needed it. 

  1. Daniel Radcliff

Daniel Radcliff is a star that’s no stranger to dealing with his alcohol addiction.

He attributes his alcohol addiction as a crutch to deal with feeling lost during the tail end of the Harry Potter franchise. He struggled with confronting and defining who he was outside of the films.

To this day he is living an alcohol-free life and comfortable in his own skin. 

  1. Jada Pinkett Smith

Jada is currently celebrating 22 years of sobriety. She promptly decided to quit drinking cold turkey and hasn’t touched alcohol or drugs since taking necessary and helpful steps.

  1. Demi Lovato

The most recently discussed sober star is Demi Lovato.

She discussed in great deal about her alcohol and drug addiction at a young age on various platforms since a young age. Demi has been battling with sobriety since the age of 19.

  1. Russell Brand

Russell Brand is currently 15 years sober. He openly discusses his struggle, process, and journey throughout his time to get sober and has even written a book about it. 

Brand continues his advocacy about addiction support and recovery through his writing and has recently put out a documentary on Netflix called Re: Birth in 2018.

Bradley Cooper has been very outspoken about his struggle with sobriety over time. He is currently sober since 2004 when he was 29 years old and a strong advocate of addiction support and recovery.

Gerard Butler has been sober for over two decades thanks to the help of the rehab program he attended. At the time, Butler was addicted to pills and had opted to seek the help he needed before it became a bigger problem

Oprah admitted to having a cocaine addiction in her early twenties on TV in 1995 during a filming of women who have had drug problems.

Famous supermodel Naomi Campbell talks openly and candidly about her cocaine addiction and subsequent recovery and sobriety process. Naomi has been happily sober since 1999.

John Stamos has been sober for 4 years now after hitting what he calls his rock bottom. His Full House costar Jodie Sweetin has been supporting him every step of the way throughout his journey.

  1. Samuel L. Jackson

Samuel L. Jackson is thankful for the support of his wife and daughter for supporting him during his sobriety process. At 29 years sober, Jackson finds himself still fighting the occasional temptation but speaks openly about his advocacy for recovery after addiction.

  1. Jamie Lee Curtis

Following an opioid addiction after minor surgery in 1989, Jamie Lee Curtis had a 10-year usage streak before seeking the help of an addictions group in 1999.

Currently, she is more than 20 years sober and discusses her sobriety openly as being her single greatest accomplishment.

Dennis Quaid thanks his ‘white-light’ moment of seeing himself dead that sent him to immediately seek out rehab during his cocaine addiction. 

He had stopped drinking for 10 years to deal with his cocaine addiction which he has successfully kept clean with.

Dax Shepard had severely struggled with various addictions between the ages of 18 and 29. He admitted to using various drugs, along with heavily drinking and smoking. 

Shepard was determined to seek the help he needed and has celebrated 16 years of sobriety this year.

  1. Steven Tyler

The lead singer of Aerosmith talked about his addiction recovery in an issue of GQ. He is currently on his fourth stint at sobriety currently going 9 years strong.

Tyler discussed how he had always feared rehab thinking it would squash his creativity and ability to perform and write music.

  1. Amanda Bynes

Amanda Bynes was in the headlines for quite a while following some very worrying social media posts and videos. 

Bynes admitted to having a drug abuse problem and sought help. She is currently 5 years sober and speaks openly about deterring young people from going down the path she did.

Zac Efron talked openly about his battle with alcohol addiction in his early twenties, blaming being young and drinking too much.

In 2013 he attended rehab, following which he began seeking help from a therapist to help support him along his recovery journey.

Faceless mystery singer Sia, will have her 10-year sobriety celebration coming up in September of this year. The singer speaks candidly about her addiction to drunks and alcohol and shared her 8-year milestone in a Tweet in 2018.

In 2007, Eminem, aka Marshall Mathers, had almost died for an accidental overdose that landed him in the hospital. He decided at the time that he needed help and entered a rehab program that has helped him stay sober for the past 12 years.

Toby Maguire has his own rehab experience when he came to terms with his alcohol addiction. In 2003 he opened up about his recovery in an issue of Playboy magazine.

  1. Colin Farrell

Successfully 13 years sober, Colin is very open about his addiction recovery and how much work it takes. He recently admitted himself into rehab in 2018 when he began to feel urges to partake in his vices again. 

  1. John Mayer

John Mayer has been sober for 3 years now after he spent 6 days recovering from an alcohol-induced hangover. 

He decided that he didn’t want to feel this way again and be able to have 100% of his potential, and he stopped drinking after that.

  1. Kelly Osbourne

Kelly recently celebrated 3 years sobriety highlighting how supportive her family has been for seeking help and getting back on track with her life.

She had stepped out of the public eye for some time to heal and go on her sobriety journey.

  1. Stephen Moyer

Stephen Moyer, the actor who plays vampire Bill Compton on HBO’s hit series True Blood, has been 19 years sober.

Moyer came to terms with how out of control he was of his life and following the birth of his first born son, decided to cut off his relationship with alcohol for good.

  1. John Goodman

John Goodman began drinking while filming the hit tv series Roseanne. He eventually sought the help he needed after dealing with his alcohol addiction for years. Goodman currently celebrates 5 years of his sobriety.

  1. Tom Hardy

Tom Hardy has successfully stayed sober since he was 25 years old. He attended a 12 step program to get him into recovery, and has actively talked about the most difficult part of a recovery journey is staying sober.

These sober celebrities are making it clear that the Hollywood stigma of partying isn’t all the glitz and glamour it’s made out to be. The individuals have battled their demons and continue to do so every day just like any non-celebrity battling an addiction.
