Are you trying to figure out how to hang clothes and keep your closet nice? Read this article to learn more about closet organization.

Do you look in your closet and wonder how can I organize this? A survey found that women had on average $500 worth of clothing they do not wear. Imagine all that space if you got rid of clothing you do not wear.

To keep your closet organized, you need to know how to hang clothes. With proper organizing, you can find your clothes easier, keep them looking nice, and remove clutter with these closet organizing tips.

Begin Decluttering

One of the first things you need to do is get rid of stuff you no longer wear. One of the easiest ways to do this is to divide your clothes into categories such as tops, pants, dresses, undergarments, outwear, and accessories. This way you can sort through each category and determine what you want to keep or get rid of.

By sorting categories, you can see which items you have too much of. On average, people only wear 20 percent of their clothes about 80 percent of the time. You will know what items you want to keep.

Empty Out Your Closet

Remove everything from your closet, which you may have done as you started decluttering. Remove all the hangers, bins, and all items on the shelves and floor.

Now it’s time to clean the space. Make sure you dust every surface. Clean the floor by sweeping or mopping, and then wipe out all the baskets and bins.

Start Organizing

Now it’s time to figure out how to organize clothes. When you organized your clothing to get rid of items, keep your clothes in these groups as you hang them back up. Go a little further by grouping long sleeve shirts together and short sleeves together.

Keep accessories and shoes away from your clothing. Store them separately so you can easily find them. Keep items you wear towards the front.

Make sure all your clothing is clean when you put it back. This includes your shoes—check out Simple Shine to make your old shoes shine again.

Put items you don’t wear as much toward the back. This includes seasonal items or dress clothes you only wear occasionally.

How to Hang Clothes

Make sure you hang up all the obvious stuff including dresses, blazers, skirts, and dress shirts. Hang everything in the same direction.

You can organize it even more by hanging longer items to the left, and the shorter items to right. This gives nice lines to your closet by creating an upward sloping line.

You can fold pants in half to hang or choose pants hangers to let them hang for fewer wrinkles. You can also give your closet a clean look by buying coordinating hangers instead of mismatched wire, plastic, and cloth.

Stack and Roll

Stack your thinner items like sweaters and jeans on a shelf. You should be able to see each piece of clothing when you stack.

If you have drawers, you can roll your t-shirts, pajamas, and work out clothes, or put them in storage boxes. Fold these items in half and then roll into little tubes. Cotton is perfect for storing this way.
