Staying Safe On LA Roads During The Coronavirus Lockdown

Despite a brief 50% drop in traffic fatalities, road crashes in LA have returned to pre-coronavirus levels. According to LA police, this spike in accidents is being caused by an increase in speeding on the now unusually-empty roads, as well as greater numbers of people walking and cycling around the city. As a result, 21 people have been killed in traffic accidents in LA in May so far, including three people in a recent multi-vehicle crash in Willowbrook.
Improving LA Road Safety
LA has implemented new methods to improve road safety and keep traffic accidents to a minimum during lockdown, for the sake of health and safety. For example, pedestrian push buttons at crosswalks are no longer operational; this means drivers will be forced to slow down and stop thanks to longer traffic signal cycles. Popular streets in Chinatown, Hollywood, Westlake, Koreatown, and downtown now have automated walk signals with East Hollywood, South LA, Van Nuys, Miracle Mile, Studio City, University Park, and Highland Park shortly to have the same changes. Most of the 500 traffic lights throughout LA have been put on nighttime settings. Usually, drivers can reach multiple green lights at consecutive intersections, but nighttime settings prevent this happening and force drivers to stop.
Tips For Drivers
“As businesses begin to reopen and traffic picks back up, drivers need to get used to the fact that there are other people in the streets,” said Deputy Chief Blake Chow. Drivers need to be particularly careful of people walking and cycling, as well as pedestrians with strollers and carts. Distracted or careless driving is a prime reason for accidents. Always stay alert while driving; using a smartphone or playing music at full volume should be avoided. It also helps to try and anticipate the actions of nearby drivers—especially on busy or open roads. Remember to take rest breaks on longer drives to stay safe and avoid fatigue on the road (however, some rest locations may be closed due to the current lockdown).
Action Steps After an Accident
The reality is car accidents still happen no matter how safe and responsible drivers may be. Drivers involved in a traffic accident should remain calm and call the police—even in the absence of serious injuries. A police report may need to be filed to make a claim with the insurance company concerning injury or vehicle damage. It’s also important to consult a reputable and experienced auto accident lawyer for legal protection. Lawyers can help people involved in car accidents win financial compensation for the many expenses typically involved, such as emergency and ongoing medical bills, lost income (including lost future earnings), property damage, and emotional pain and suffering. They offer a wealth of expert knowledge and support to help win the case.
Road safety and traffic accidents continue to be a huge problem for LA during the coronavirus lockdown. It’s important drivers remain vigilant to protect themselves and others while driving on city roads.
