The magical Columbia Pictures Building on the historic Sony lot was the spot for cast, crew, and fans to gather for the red carpet World Premiere of Double Jack.
The quirky new comedy series from IGTV stars Willie Macc (Meet the Spartans, Laugh Factory) and creator/star Stephanie Stern (No Solicitors, Haunted House) in her directorial debut.
The intimate crowd sipped on cocktails and feasted on sushi before the screening in the cozy and elegant Thalberg Theater.
Stylish guests delighted in the experience crafted by Nadine Jolson of Jolson Creative, who playfully added hard hats to the red carpet and decor in a nod to Double Jack’s theme.
Double Jack features Nickel Jacks, an offbeat Southern parolee who lands a job with Jack Carter’s construction company and struggles to assert her relevance in a male-dominated business.
The outlandish Nickel (Stern) and confounded yet patient Jack (Macc) are great foils for one another, as Nickel inadvertently but playfully pushes everyone’s buttons. Double Jack was well-received by the audience which, to borrow a phrase from Nickel, felt “finer than a frog’s hair split four ways.”
The construction comedy evolved out of Stern’s desire to create unique content, and her Texas upbringing and a husband in construction provided a wealth of material.
While deciding what project to channel her energy into, Stern said, “I looked at my life.” She found herself exploring her insider knowledge, continuing, “There’s a lot of women in construction, who are actually doing big jobs, and growing up in Texas around construction, I knew there’s a lot of felons, too. [Double Jack] is my quirky spin on it.”
Actor/comedian Willie Macc shined in the role of Jack. While he didn’t set out to be a star and once pursued a law degree, Macc’s a standout. He credits the late Bernie Mac for changing the course of his life and inspiring his career when he worked background on Mac’s eponymous show. Regarding comedy, Macc said, “I have a wild imagination that never stays still. My brain is very creative, which helps me with my writing and comedy.”
The screening received big laughs, particularly at the guileless Nickel’s Texas colloquialisms and her new colleague’s and parole officer’s reactions to them. “Are you really like this or is this some kind of survival defense mechanism?” a co-worker deadpans after Nickel manages to baffle the crew once again.
The series ends in a cliffhanger, with Macc’s character poised to save the day, prompting cheers from the audience, shouting, “Yes, yes, yes!” Stern graciously took her bow as the lights came up, to a crowd chanting, “More, we need more!” and “Do not leave us here!”
The Season One premiere of the short-form digital series features six episodes which launched in weekly installments on March 3rd on IGTV Channel’s @DoubleJackSeries. The series is also available on Vimeo and YouTube.
