The Rox Hernia Center mainly uses two surgical techniques to treat hernias: open or laparoscopic. Both techniques can be performed as outsurgery/same day operations, thus allowing the patient to go home on the same day or even as soon as a few hours after the procedure.

The Rox Hernia Center favors a “tension free” technique for hernia surgery. In this approach, a surgeon inserts a piece of synthetic mesh to close up the hernia defect. From there, the body will grow new tissue into the mesh (aka interstices) to consolidate the surgical repair and reduce the chances that the hernia will come back.

Building on the tension-free technique, the Rox Hernia Center also favors the laparoscopic method for hernia repair, in which a camera is inserted into the abdominal cavity through a series of tiny incisions. Due to the better visibility provided by the camera, the surgeon can make smaller incisions and perform better intra-abdominal procedures. For patients, this translates into reduced post-op pain and discomfort, less likelihood of post-op wound complications, and better long-term results.

Though hernia repair is never simple, some hernia surgeries can be less complicated. Umbilical hernias, which primarily affect women and babies, can be fixed through a single small incision directly above the defect. A mesh implant may be needed for more severe cases, but in many cases, the hernia can be sewn together with suture material or a patient’s own connective tissue. The latter technique is often employed with mommy makeovers, aka tummy tucks, aka abdominoplasty.

At the Rox Hernia Center, you’ll find both general surgeons and plastic surgeons available for hernia surgery. Dr. Dan Marcus and Dr. Matthew Lublin are the general surgeons on staff, and Dr. Kevin Brenner, Dr. Jay Calvert, Dr. Ritu Chopra, Dr. Andrew Ordon, and Dr. Anita Patel make up the plastic surgery stable.

More info on Hernias

Hernias can strike anyone at any time, with an unfortunate lift or strain, or through natural causes such as pregnancy, obesity, smoking, genetics, or bad surgical incisions. They also affect both men and women, at any age, which many people may not realize.

The most common sign of a hernia is a protruding bulge from your abdomen, but other symptoms may show up, such as pain in your abdomen, nausea, vomiting, and numbness. Hernias of the abdominal wall are most common and, thus, are simply referred to as “hernias” by most people.

Patients may feel major pain and discomfort, and with more serious hernias, a patient’s organs — particularly the bowels and intestines — may be affected or become trapped by the defect. In turn, this can turn everyday activities such as lifting, straining, or going to the bathroom into tortuous events. Though a hernia may feel better when a patient is lying down, this is only a temporary effect of reduced pressure on the affected area. Contrary to folk wisdom, hernias don’t simply get better on their own; they need treatment.
