I couldn’t begin to tell you how many of my clients have made the following remark after their first reading with me, “Cheri, I can’t tell you how wonderful it has been to find a real Psychic Medium!” And then comes the litany of bad psychic experiences coupled with another list of what they have learned to watch out for when booking with a psychic for a reading. Some even keep track of how much money they have wasted on bad readings!

Soon after I began teaching individual and group classes on Metaphysics I always found myself lecturing at some point on what to look for initially in a prospective psychic. And I also spoke about what my students should expect of them after booking their appointments.

Watch Cheri’s video explaining how to avoid fraudulent psychics:

Here is a partial list from those lectures of questions to ask yourself during your contact with a psychic for the first time:

Did a friend or family member refer the psychic to you? This is often the very best way to find a good psychic. The person who refers you to the psychic will always be more than happy to fill you in on the details of their reading, so listen carefully to them. Make sure they got what they wanted without any prompting from the reader. And ask about the length of the reading and how much they paid. When you contact the psychic be sure to mention the name of the person who referred you to them. Psychics prefer personal referrals because they know that the person being referred is usually of good character. Interestingly enough, there is such a thing as the Psychic Client from Hell!

Does the psychic answer the phone or greet you in a professional manner? You can tell a lot about a psychic and how well you will interact with them in the first few minutes of conversation. If they are rude, indifferent or arrogant initially you must assume that will be their manner during the reading and vice versa.

Is the psychic controlling from the very start of your conversation? If the person demands that you get a reading from them and that they know you have a curse on yourself that needs to be cured – run away as fast as you can! Many so-called psychics bleed their clients dry by playing on their fear. They convince them that there is some evil attached to them that must be removed or they will die or continue to have bad luck. And one treatment quickly turns into many more treatments. Some of these cons have gotten hundreds of thousands of dollars from unsuspecting clients. Good psychics are here to genuinely help you not to fleece you of your hard earned money.

Does the psychic ramble on and on about nothing? This could be a very bad sign. It indicates that the psychic is unfocused and may waste a lot of time getting the point of his or her insight across to you. And it may indicate that they will flit about from subject to subject leaving you without a clear understanding of what the reading was about when it is over.

Does the psychic ask a lot questions about you, your family or your friends? If the psychic begins pumping you for information it is okay for you to tell them that you don’t want to spoil the reading by telling them too much about yourself. That should be all right with them and if it is not then don’t book an appointment with them. It is their job to tell you about yourself. That is part of the validation that they should be looking for in each of their readings.

Does the psychic talk a lot about themselves rather than their services or talent? This is a very prevalent problem with phone-line psychics. Many of them waste time by talking about themselves and unbelievably a lot of people let them get away with it. If this occurs early on in your initial contact with them you may want to keep looking for another psychic.

Is the psychic clear about exactly what services they perform? You will need to know exactly what the psychic is going to be doing for you. Are they Clairvoyant (see), Clairsentient (feel) or Clairaudient(hear) for example. Do they use cards to do the reading or do they have to hold onto a personal object or picture to get going (Psychometry)?  Do they communicate with the spirit of those who have passed? Or do they receive predictive information from a Spirit Guide? Determining what they can and cannot do should help you to determine that you will get what you came for during the reading.

Is the psychic clear about pricing? This is the most important thing to get straight from the start. A reputable psychic will quote you a price and stick to it. There should be no question from that point forward about the length of your reading and the cost for it.

While we are on the subject of the length of your reading, if the psychic starts to go past your allotted time during your booked session, be smart and point it out to them. They may have lost track of the time or they may be trying to extend the reading so that they then charge you extra for it. A good psychic will note that the session is up and ask if you want to continue. Don’t feel obligated to go for any more time than you originally agreed upon. Once you have received the amount of time that you have paid for you have fulfilled your part of the bargain.

And here is another partial list of what you should expect or beware of during a psychic reading:

Is the psychic nervous in any way? This may indicate that the psychic is new at performing readings. This may be okay if their prices are inline with their inexperience. It can be a plus if a psychic admits to you that this is something that is very new to them. You can get a great reading from a “newbie” if you are sure to let them know when they are correct in what they are seeing for you. We call this ‘validation’. Trust me when I say that all psychics live for validation!

What is the extent of the psychic’s metaphysical background? Does he or she have any certificates of achievement from a certified school of Metaphysics or religious organization? Does he or she display any of that knowledge when they converse with you?  Education can make a good psychic a great one with the right instructor. Ask if this information is not offered to you right away.

Does the psychic briefly explain how they will be conducting the session? This is important information for you because it will help to set you at ease during the reading. If the psychic does not explain their procedure then ask! It’s allowed.

Does the psychic ask you things rather than tell you? A good psychic will begin a session with his or her impressions gathered from Spirit rather than going on a verbal fishing expedition for the reason why you came to see them. It’s easy to get tricked into giving up pertinent information because you naturally hope it will help the psychic tune in better to your situation.  Don’t fall for that old trick!

Do you seem to be doing most of the talking? Since our favorite subject of conversation is usually our self many charlatans engage you in conversation that is geared towards getting you to do most of the talking. Don’t do it. Make your answers brief and concise. Don’t go on and on trying to give the psychic as much detail as you can possibly remember about the subject of their questions. It is best to remember something very important here; you are paying for each minute you sit in front of a psychic once the session begins. Don’t waste them with idle chatter.

Is the psychic accurate about anything that he or she is relaying to you? Some readings start off a little sketchy and they get better as soon as the psychic has validation from the client sitting in front of them. However, if this does not take place within say the first ten minutes of the reading you may want to stop the session and ask for a refund. Don’t let the psychic struggle on forever. It won’t do either one of you any good to continue if there is no connection with spirit. And definitely ask for a full refund.

I feel that the best way to determine the value of a psychic is when you find that they are well educated in the science of Metaphysics. In this way you will know that a psychic is interpreting what he or she sees correctly. And you can better spot the phonies from the real thing, too. That is always an extra benefit for my clients when they take my private Psychic  and Spiritual Development classes from me at my home or by telephone. You can email me through my website at: www.mediumcheri.com  if you are interested in taking my classes on Psychic and Spiritual Development . Or you might check to see if there is a metaphysical center or church near you that offers the same type of courses. Try to find one that is non-denominational.

Regardless, if you have paid attention to what I have detailed in this article you are ready to shop for a psychic like a pro! Happy hunting!
