DAY 10: Salerno, Italy
By Day 10 we were exhausted from walking all over Italy. We weren’t sure what there was to do in Salerno but we knew we didn’t want to do a lot of walking. We did walk for a while through the main shopping area but we were just too tired to see much of Salerno.
For lunch, we returned to the ship. As I was sitting in the Lido restaurant I had a very pretty view of the coastline which consisted of a series of mountains in the background and some smaller hills in the foreground that were populated with colorful cottages which overlooked a very pretty blue beach. I saw people swimming at the beach and I thought it might be nice to take a swim in the Mediterranean before heading back to the states. So my fiancé and I suited up and went off in search of the beach.
After a 20 minute walk, we arrived. The beach was very crowded and everyone kept staring at us. I’m not sure whether it was because they could tell we were American or because we were the whitest people they’d ever seen in their lives (the Italians are very tan). We ignored the occasional glance in our direction and went in the water. It was colder than I had expected so it took me a while to get in all the way but I finally did it. I thought swimming in the Mediterranean would be different than swimming in L.A. but it was pretty much the same. I’m still glad I did it though. After we finished our swim we collected some rocks to give to people as souvenirs and returned to the ship.
That night the Holland America singers and dancers put on an awesome show that I felt was one of the best acts on the whole cruise. They even changed their routines up to make them more gay friendly by having the men dance together and perform duets together, which everyone in the audience seemed to think was a nice touch.
And then, we packed. It was our final night on the ship and we were expected to depart the ship by 9:30 am the next day. We both were sad that the trip was over but we were also excited to get back home.
