35th Annual Surfer Poll and Video Awards

Young Guns 3 was a huge winner at Tuesday night’s 35th Annual Surfer Poll and Video Awards presented by Suzuki Auto, best movie winnerwinning Best Performance by a Female, Best Performance by a Male as well as Movie of the Year.

Kelly Slater and Sofia Mulanovich had plenty to smile about too, both winning the top spots in the poll for the third consecutive year. Slater holds the record for the most wins in history of the Surfer Poll Awards, snagging a total of 13 wins total since 1993. Still overwhelmed despite all his previous wins, he took a moment to compose himself in front of the crowd of thousands at The Grove of Anaheim before thanking SURFER magazine and proclaiming this the best night in surfing.

Mulanovich also showed plenty of class and grace as she accepted her award, stating, “I dedicate this win to the people in Peru who lost their homes due to the earthquake. Be strong and keep fighting.”

15-year-old Hawaiin Carissa Moore charmed the audience as well, expressing her excitement for winning Best Female Performance in Young Guns 3 by first thanking SURFER Magazine, her sponsors, and friends and family before finally exclaiming “I feel very honored. I’m stoked!”

Other highlights of the evening included Pro skater Jake Brown ironically presenting the Worst Wipeout award to Bra Boy Richie Vas- but only after a touching show of support from the audience for his recent 3-story fall from the Mega Ramp at the X Games.

Guest presenters included Big wave great Brock Little, pro skater and MTV’s Life Of Ryan star Ryan Sheckler, South African legend Shaun Thompson, tennis pro and NBC’s Age of Love star Mark Philippoussis.

Co-hosted by Sal Masekela (co-host of The Daily 10 on E!) and surf star Benji Weatherly, the awards ceremony raised $30,000 for PacSun USA Surf Team and for the very special charity, Da Friends of Jeannie Chesser, a charity trying to raise enough financial support to assist Chesser- a Hawaiin surf icon and the “surf mother” of many surfers who move to Hawaii- as she battles Merkel Cell cancer.

Marketing communications Manager for Suzuki Auto, (a diversified worldwide manufacturer selling more than 2 million automobiles, motorcycles and outboard-motors annually) Ben Hilverda, expressed Suzuki’s respect and appreciation for surfing while presenting the USA Surf Team with a new Suzuki Grand Vitara.

SURFER Magazine- part of Primedia’s Action Sports Group (ASG)- is widely recognized the “Bible of the Sport,” reaching more surfers across the world than any other publication for the sport.
