The Center for Disease Control estimates that one-third of Americans over the age of 20 are overweight, while the incidence of childhood diabetes and hypertension is increasing as well. Obesity-related illnesses have hit the health care industry — and consumers — significantly, in terms of quality of life and cost of care, and the bad news piles up every day.

The ties between obesity and numerous strains of cancer have been well documented, but the links between obesity and melanoma — a form of skin cancer –haven’t been as apparent. Past research projects have reached divergent conclusions on the topic, but a recent study published by the European Journal of Cancer was able to draw from the stores of knowledge on the topic to offer an overview on the relationship between obesity and melanoma.

According to the European Journal, men who are overweight and/or obese face a higher risk of malignant melanoma. The association between obesity and melanoma was not statistically notable for women, perhaps — as theorized by the researchers — because overweight or obese females limit their exposure to the sun and, thus, their risk of skin cancer.

“Melanoma is the deadliest form of skin cancer and the number of cases is increasing every year. Once rare among young people, it is now the second most common kind of cancer for people under 30.” stated Dr. Travis Kidner, a Surgical Oncologist at the Rox Cancer Center in Beverly Hills. “In addition to helping fund Melanoma research, our goal for sponsoring the event was to spread the word about the early signs of melanoma. When detected in the early stages, melanoma is a highly treatable disease, however survival decreases dramatically once the cancer spreads to other organs of the body. At the Rox Cancer Center we are dedicated to providing a personalized approach to cancer screenings and surgical care.” added Dr. Kidner.

But connoisseurs will surely be able to find a vintage more to their budget and their liking from the rest of the Penfolds line, whether you’re looking for a shiraz, a chardonnay, a pinot noir, a reisling, or others.

Though relatively new to the United States, Penfolds has a long and storied history in Australia going back to 1844, when Dr. Christopher Penfold and his wife Mary purchased a 500-acre estate. Over the decades, the Penfold estate refined and expanded its wine production. By the 1940s, Penfolds had become a leading name in Australian drinking circles, and in the early 2000s, it had reached every major wine market across the globe, spreading the taste of Australia, one bottle at a time.

Icon and Luxury Range

But what about the wine? At the top of the Penfolds line is the Icon & Luxury Range, which includes the classic Grange Shiraz ($850) that originally put Penfolds on the map. The Bin Range

The Bin Range forms the heart of Penfolds’ catalog, with a wide selection of shiraz, pinot noir, cabernets, Riesling, and chardonnay. Penfolds’ shiraz expertise is well-known and are easily worth imbibing, but you’d do well to investigate the other choices. The inaugural Bin 23 Pinot Noir 2009, for example, is a new addition to the Bin family and brings all the intriguing complexities of its lineage. The Thomas Hyland Line

The Thomas Hyland line honors the memory and legacy of Dr. Penfold’s son-in-law, who helmed the company from the late 1800s to 1914, as it developed its identity and reputation. This well-edited line includes a shiraz, a cabernet sauvignon, a Reisling, and a chardonnay. The best representative of the line may be the Thomas Hyland Shiraz 2010, which boasts dark, ripe notes of cut plums, black forest cake, licorice, and anise. Aged in oak casks, the shiraz adds a touch of vanilla to each glass. Pair it with a rare steak for the ultimate combo.

Also joining the panel is Sprint’s own director of solutions engineering Kim Wade, who speaks from the experience of heading an 80-strong team of solutions engineers and cloud solutions managers for the West region. This group creates the wireless, wireline, and converged solutions that Sprint’s top business and public-sector customers use daily. Kim brings 16 years of expertise in the wireless industry, particularly as applied to cutting-edge technology applications and packages for Sprint Nextel in Southern California and the West. In his decade-plus with Sprint, he has achieved the highest levels of market penetration and hit upon a winning formula through industry specialization. For these and other reasons, Sprint’s Presidents Council has honored Kim on several occasions for outstanding performance.
