This was the sixth year in a row that we attended the Sundance Film Festival which started with us checking into our room at the Waldorf Astoria in the Canyons a short complimentary shuttle ride into Main Street and Park City where all that is Sundance takes place. We come to Sundance every year to conduct business, smooze, network and party A stay at the Waldorf is always a great way to start the trip as they make you feel right at home.

From picking up the Swag, seeing old friends and making our appearances we had a full slate of events and busy schedule which started with us driving in what seemed the “Blizzard of 88″ to the Park City Ice Arena to assemble fifty gift bags for the Echoes of Hope Charity run by NHL Great Luc Robitaille, this was the second year that we produced the Gift Bags and the key was getting the bags assembled as quickly as possible so we can get back into the snow and enjoy Sundance. Now it was time for the fun to start as we headed to Main Street and along the way bumped into “Hell on Wheels” and Rap Star Common on Main Street as we were heading in and he was heading out of the Sundance Channel HQ which for the price of having your name on the Invite List lunch was provided at no cost which is what brings people to these events, food, drink at no cost. You know it’s truly amazing how much FREE stuff you can get at Sundance, from the Swag you get at the Gift Suites if your lucky enough to be on the list to the free beer by Stella Artois, free tequilla from patron, food, energy drinks, beenies, hand warmers, lip balm, the latter is passed along on the streets of Park City to promote brands and businesses. After leaving the Sundance Channel HQ and our Turkey Sandwich with cranberry sauce we ventured back into the Blizzard which must have been the most snow this small city has received in decades which made our journeys along Main Street that much more of a challenge as we paused to light up a Macanudo Cigar we met “Modern Family’s Ty Burrell who was in town to promote his new film “Goats”. He literally had only a moment to shake my hand and me tell him congrats on the shows recent Golden Globe win.

Outside on the streets it was 19 degrees which is a lot colder than we’re used to in sunny Hollywood. Now it was time for us to hit our first Gifting Lounge as we continued to bump into celebrities roaming the streets. Our first lounge was the Entertainment Tonight suite at the Sky Lodge, as we exited the elevator on the roof we met Kristin Dunst checking into the Suite, as our name was on the list we entered the suite and went direct to the bar for an afternoon chocolate Patron with cheese and crackers which we devoured in moments as we headed in to get gifted. First up was Remix watches which is a Scottsdale-based cool trendy watch we first met when we hosted the Soul Train Music Awards in Atlanta in November, a great affordable watch, we moved quickly to get our complimentary photo to remember the moment, drank some more stella artois, received some Burts Bees complimentary balms and hand creme and it was time to move on again, with our schedule we couldn’t stay anywhere longer than an hour. That being said on the elevator down to the lobby we run into Oscar nominee Richard Jenkins with West Wing’s Alison Janey who loved my attitude glasses I was wearing asking where I got them and after telling her they were generic Walmart brand I got a huge laugh from everybody in the elevator.

Along the way we stopped off at the Alive Eco Lounge where although our name was on the list we were rejected entry as the hosts recognized the “Kings of Swag” and saw us as competition to their brands in the lounge and we were turned away, alas all was not lost as we headed across the street and visited the Talent Resources Lounge where I hooked up with the event planner who had put the event together as he was a fellow judge from two weeks earlier as we both judged the Miss California, USA Pageant in Palm Springs. We entered the lounge and sampled the new cinnabon flavor Cream of Wheat which was in town promoting their new flavor to the new demographic for Cream of Wheat the “Twenty-somethings’.

The day continued to move along as we had tons to do and little time to do it. This is the downside of Sundance, too much to do and not enough time to do it. We continued our Sundance experience and met up with Tinsley Mortimer, Anna Lynne Mccord, Mario Lopez, and Elizabeth Olsen. After a quick return to the Waldorf to catch our breath and a quick dip in the overly heated pool and Jacuzzi to warm the bones we ventured back out to the Street on Main and found our Echoes Of Hope party to attend where we talked with host Luc Robitaille who thanked us for providing the Gift Bags for his event, we dined on a fantastic catered Mexican dinner topped with the Tequila of choice for the evening Alma Tequila which was great by the way and puts Patron to shame. On our way out of the party we had a moment to chat with E! Entertainments very own Ken Baker.

This is what Sundance is, an opportunity to network and conduct business in an enviornment which allows you to have fun while working which is a great job and provides us with a great lifestyle. We look forward to Sundance 2013.

Luc Robitaille’s 4th annual Celebrity Shootout benefiting Echoes of Hope and Sundance Institute was held during the Sundance Film Festival, Park City, UT. WOW!

It may be snowing in Park City like it does every year during Sundance Film Festival, but when the sun reflects off that gorgeous fresh powder, sunglasses are mandatory. To protect celebs eyes and keep their stylish image intact, Solstice Sunglass Boutique supplied them with Spring 2012 collection this weekend in Park City, Utah at The Bertolli Meal Soup Chalet hosted by GenArt and the CWPR’s RE: Treat Lounge.

Solstice Sunglass Boutique fitted a variety of bold names with the new Spring 2012 collection this weekend at the Sundance Film Festival, including brands such as Boss Black, Boss Orange, Carrera, Juicy Couture, Kate Spade New York, Marc Jacobs, Marc by Marc Jacobs, Tommy Hilfiger, Gucci, and YSL.

Talent attendees included Emily Blunt, Kate Bosworth, Lake Bell, Laura Prepon, Nia Vardalos, Tyler Hilton, Geoffrey Arend, Christina Hendricks, Megan Park, Anthony Mackie, Dylan O’Brien, Byrdie Bell, Casper Van Dien, Kaycee Stroh, Andie McDowell, Julie Marie Berman, Grant Harvey, Katie Aselton, Jesse Williams, Justin Long, Laetitia Casta, and more.

(from clockwise left) Nia Vardalos, Laura Prepon, Lake Bell, Kate Bosworth, Katie Aselton and Andie McDowell.

Justin Long is probably used to being surrounded by the young ladies, but grandmas? As Justin made his way over to Solstice Sunglass Boutique on Sunday, he forgot his shopping bags on a nearby coach, which he purposely had left behind, and was surprised to see an 80-year -old woman tapping his shoulder with the bags in her hand. The older lady seemed to have a crush on the actor as she sat down next to him when he was trying on sunglasses from Boss Black and gave her opinion on every pair he tried on.

Laura Prepon pulled a classic move on Friday, getting in the car in a hurry; she forgot her shades on the roof and accidentally drove off. Thankfully Solstice Sunglass Boutique at The Bertolli Meal Soup Chalet hosted by GenArt was there for her to pick up a new pair. Dressed in a furry black and gray animal hat with ears – given to her by her “hippie sister” – she slipped on Tommy Hilfiger shades to match her ski bunny outfit.

Andie McDowell had no movie at Sundance this year, but that didn’t stop her from attending the festival for charity. Andie slipped on a pair of Marc Jacobs shades at Solstice Sunglass Boutique before heading out into the cold.

Snowboarding or Skiing? That was the existential question in hot debate between Black Rock co-stars Kate Bosworth, Lake Bell and Katie Aselton, all in Park City for their film premiere. Kate admitted that she hadn’t even tried snowboarding.. The trio agreed that skiing is preferred among the ladies, but après-ski by a warm fire is the real winner. Kate admitted that she hadn’t even tried snowboarding. As the true fashionista in the group, Kate gave pointers to her friends, pointing out a pair Marc Jacobs at the Solstice Sunglass Boutique lounge that she liked and suggested them to Lake, who ended up with a pair of YSL shades.

(from clockwise left) Laura Prepon, Anthony Mackie, Emily Blunt

Tyler Hilton picked out shades for his longtime girlfriend Megan Park at Solstice Sunglass Boutique and vice versa. He kept asking for her opinion and finally decided on a pair of Boss Black.

Supporting her husband’s (Geoffrey Arend) first lead role in Save the Date, Christina Hendricks was at Sundance. The two love birds bundled up together to watch the Giants vs. San Francisco game on Sunday, while onsite the two stocked up on shades at Solstice Sunglass Boutique. Both picked up sunglasses from the same brand, Christina rocking a pair of YSL 6367 and Geoffrey in YSL 2334.

Emily Blunt popped by Solstice Sunglass Boutique at CW3PR’s RE: treat lounge proclaiming how she’s always in sunglasses and loves a good aviator. In Park City to promote her new film Your Sister’s Sister, the actress picked up a few pairs of sunglasses from Bottega Veneta and YSL to bring back to LA.

Hollywood talent from all backgrounds gathered last Thursday at the Egyptian Theatre to celebrate Red Line Tours unveiling their new series of collectible souvenir tickets designed by world-renowned artist Andre Miripolsky. Cast members from Broadway hits like “Grease” and “Peter Pan” to films such as “Westside Story” and “E.T. The Extraterrestrial” as well as TV classics like “The Dick Van Dyke Show,” “My Three Sons,” “Bewitched,” “Happy Days” and “The Waltons” to “Y&R” and “Hanna Montana” were present.

We know what you might be thinking. What exactly do all these individuals have in common? They all share a passion for the preservation of Hollywood History.

A few of the artists on hand for the event took the 75-minute guide-led journey of Hollywood Behind-the-Scenes, revealing the story of Hollywood from its Golden Age to present day. The tour is the only walking tour in Los Angeles and the only tour that uses a live state of the art adjustable audio system (by Williams Sound) that allows all patrons to hear the guide up to 300 feet, regardless of the surrounding noise.

“I was amazed at the clarity. Despite the street noises, not to mention a rather boisterous group of demonstrators, I could hear every word the guide said on the tour,” remarked Romi Dames of “Hanna Montana.”

George Chakiris of West Side Story and Tony Hoover

While visiting Grauman’s Chinese Theatre the group took a slight side trip took to visit the nearby star of Ms. Kate Linder of “The Young & the Restless,” who had joined the tour. Practically born into the industry as Tabitha Stevens on “Bewitched” Erin Murphy commented, “I think that older patrons of the tour will find themselves either reliving great memories while the younger ones will be learning about an industry that has defined the last century. Those of us who are connected to the industry, walk away with a sense of pride in being part of it.”

The 2012-edition 3 ticket series of Red Line Tours entitled “The Icons of Hollywood” highlights three historically important structures representing music, stage and the silver screen – the Capitol Records building, Grauman’s Chinese Theatre and the Hollywood Bowl. The tickets are good for admission to Hollywood Behind-the-Scenes and are anticipated to be a high quality collectible memento.

Stan Livingston, Barbara Van Orden, Dee Wallace, Sherrye Woodley, Rip Taylor, Barry Livingston, Judy Norton, Andre Miripolsky, Rose Marie, Mary McDonough, Michael Learned, Romi Dames, George Chakiris, Ruta Lee, Kate Linder, Don Most, Erin Murphy, Ilene Graff and Tony Hoover.

Special guests that attended the event included: George Chakiris, Romi Dames, Ilene Graff, Tippi Hedren, Kate Linder, Barry Livingston, Stan Livingston, Michael Learned, Ruta Lee, Rose Marie, Mary McDonough, Don Most, Erin Murphy, Judy Norton, Hugh O’Brian, Rip Taylor, Dee Wallace and Barbara Van Orden among others.

Red Line Tours Hollywood Behind the Scenes is undisputedly one of Hollywood’s most popular and enduring attractions and has become part of Hollywood’s modern history. Actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt used Red Line Tours Downtown LA tour to help prepare for his role in “500 Days of Summer,” and Clare Danes toured with founder Tony Hoover as part of a piece on her early days in theatre.

The Red Line Tour guides dispel myths and often reveal unknown behind the scenes stories, classic movie palaces, history of the Hollywood Sign, Walk of Fame lore… and Hollywood’s hidden hideaways of the Stars, while taking patrons inside venues generally restricted to the public. Maxim has ruled the Super Bowl party scene for years, but this year the brand will elevate their presence to a higher level. The introduction of a VIP and consumer tailgate party, will put Maxim in position to be the biggest thing to hit Indianapolis, other than the big game itself.

Following the Saturday night blowout bash, the fun continues on February 5th with the Maxim Tailgate: Salute to Heroes – the ultimate pre-game celebration. The festivities will be hosted by NFL Editor at Large, Tony “Goose” Siragusa, Maxim Hometown Hotties winner, April Rose, and guest honoree, Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient, Dakota Meyer. Located within walking distance of Lucas Oil Stadium, guests can enjoy a traditional tailgate atmosphere with a Maxim twist. With the purchase of a ticket fans can enjoy tailgate games and takeaways, munch on delicious snacks and sip on custom-themed cocktails while professional cheerleaders get guests into the Super Bowl spirit.

Green is color of the season in Monterey, CA. Portola Hotel & Spa, the luxurious seaside hotel, has recently received the prestigious LEED certification. Portola Hotel & Spa is now the third of all California hotels to ‘go green’ and only sixth in the nation.

On a trip to Monterey to find out what was new to do in 2011, I wanted to know if staying at such an eco-friendly place meant I had to use bark for toilet paper, use lights sparingly and sleep on burlap sheets?

Welcomed with a freshly baked cookie when I checked in, I had a clue that my fears of sacrificing comfort for the good of the environment were unsubstantiated.

With tranquil views of Monterey Bay and sounds of seals happily barking, my posh nautical-themed decorated room further assuaged my concerns. I did notice the Green from Natura bath amenities and energy saving TV and fridge, but beyond this, the LEED certification did not interfere with a pure five-star experience.

To further investigate Portola Hotel & Spa, I went to Peter B’s BrewPub for a beer pairing lunch. Even the water and hops used in the brewing process on site are being recycled to farmers for watering crops and feeding cattle.

With a full belly of Chef Jason Giles American gourmet bites and brewmaster Kevin Clark’s craft beer, I sauntered to the spa for a massage with Lawrence, the most requested massage therapist by the locals. Be-robed with lychee-infused champagne in hand, I explored Spa on the Plaza’s relaxation and steam room, plunge pool, fitness center, and outdoor Jacuzzi. Wish I had more time to experience the Japanese-style bath but it left me reason to return.

After an intuitive session of Thai stretching and Swedish technique with Lawrence, I knew why he was the favorite. Lawrence possesses the perfect balance of knowing when to apply pressure and when to back off – with very little talking, which I prefer. Also, his facial massage around my jaw line, eye sockets and temples sent me to la la land for the afternoon.

At this point, I could have happily curled up in my 310 thread-count white linen sheets but an adventure in Paddle Boarding was calling my name. Always wanting to try it out, paddle boarding in Monterey Bay was an ideal setting to experience it among the sea lions, seals, otters, giant starfish and sea gulls.

Frank Knight of Adventures by the Sea, with the patience of a saint, specializes in taking both first-timers and pro kayakers and paddle boarders on water safaris of sorts. Once I mastered the scary maneuver of hopping up to standing on the board, the ride among the sailboats and marine animals was sublime.

There was a sticky moment with an irate, barking sea lion when I couldn’t figure out how to put my board in reverse fast enough to back away as I was getting too close for its comfort. But other than one wild encounter – paddle boarding in Monterey Bay is like gliding through an ocean zoo with up close views of the rolly-polly sea lions and seals basking in the sunlight on the docks and offshore boulders.

Having worked off the corn dogs and espresso tart from lunch, I went off to discover Restaurant 1833, Monterey’s newest fine dining hotspot, opened in June. Housed in the Stokes Adobe built in 1833, the slick, modern décor tied in its checkered history with black and white portraits of past owners (who are known to haunt in a friendly manner), memorabilia from the 1950′s swinging Gallatin’s Restaurant and even a few ghost stories the staff will happily tell.

The ‘Painkiller’ Cocktails like Penicillin No. 2 pay tribute to the pharmacy and Stokes hospital of 1837. The menu features local nuances like grilled artichokes and squid salad prepared with New York sophistication. No surprise of New York influence as 1833’s Chef Levi Mezick hails from NYC restaurants such as Per Se, Daniel and Café Boulud. The crispy hen eggs, bacon-cheddar biscuits and the charred baby octopus are appetizers you won’t want to miss.

Entrées range from more basic but elevated pizzas and pastas to elaborate like fresh sturgeon and grilled bone-in ribeye. The hyper local wine list with sommelier Ted Glennon’s expert advice makes 1833 a wine connoisseurs’ dream.

Ever heard of cowboy-French cuisine? Neither had I before I went to LON’s at The Hermosa Inn fine dining restaurant in Paradise Valley, near Scottsdale, Arizona.

LON's at the Hermosa Serving Cowboy-European Cuisine

I knew I was in for a memorable dining experience when I rounded the corner and gasped. LON’s outdoor patio was a glowing, mesquite-fragrant wonderland from the wood-burning fire pits scattered about. Despite the cool desert fall weather, the outdoor fireplaces were buzzing with locals enjoying sipping martinis and wine before dinner.

Happy Hour begins early at LON’s The Last Drop Bar. From 4 pm – 7 pm, they offer specials on tapas like sliders and complimentary cheese pairings, cocktails like the Megargee Mojito and wines by the glass.

Imagine LON's Outdoor Patio at Night Under the Desert Sky... Magical.

Although I really wanted to dine under the clear, starry skies of Arizona, our party of three opted to stay warm and sit inside. After passing through the rustic wooden doors of LON’s, its history infuses the soul of the restaurant. It was originally the private adobe hacienda of Lon Megargee – the legendary Southwest artist. Cowboy culture defines LON’s décor with Megargee’s art depicting cowboy culture, vintage saddles, and black and white historical photos.

Executive Chef Jeremy Pacheco at LON's at the Hermosa

At the helm of LON’s five-star dining, Executive Chef Jeremy Pacheco from Wynn’s SW Steakhouse in Las Vegas, maintains serious quality control by serving locally sourced produce and housemade. Quite a shock that any vegetable farming could be done in the desert, but where there is a will, there is way. In Scottsdale and the surrounding areas, including LON’s own one-acre organic garden, local farming is taking root.

Growing up on a farm in Southern Arizona, its fitting that Chef Jeremy Pacheco’s menu pays tribute to the farm-to-table culinary revolution.

(Singh Farms and McClendon’s provide much of the organic produce for most of Scottdale’s best farm-to-table restaurants.)

When my boyfriend’s Salt Seared Ahi Tuna appetizer arrived – the generous portion of ruby red ahi tuna atop the hot salt rock with a sizzling ceviche sauce poured tableside was not only dramatic in presentation but the most delicious seared Ahi Tuna I have had to date (and I’ve eaten hundreds!). The Roasted Mcclendon Beets Salad with its house made goat burrata was a delicate delight as well.

While my dining companions ate their appetizers, I reserved my appetite for the 24 oz. Chili Rubbed Cowboy Ribeye. One of the unique features of LON’s menu, besides organic, local produce and house made ingredients, is the Pecan-Wood Fired specialites. Whether you choose Kobe New York Beef Strip, Rack of Lamb or the Cowboy Ribeye, be ready for a serious meat lover’s feast designed for a cowboy’s appetite after a long day out on the ranch.

Seared Ahi Tuna, Beer Battered Mushrooms and Pecan-Wood fired Chili Rubbed Ribeye

Although it does come with two vegetable sides (I chose Creamed Spinach and the Hacienda Parmesan Papas), I hardly noticed them as I was in carnivore heaven with the gorgeous, mesquite grilled steak cooked to perfection.

While I was ravenously inhaling my dinner, my friend, who is on a very strict diet for health reasons, had trouble finding a vegetarian entrée. In fact, she had to order salads and a bevy of vegetable sides to make a meal. She did not leave hungry, but LON’s, with not one vegan or vegetarian entrée, is not ideal for those who refrain from eating meat, fish or dairy.

LON's at the Hermosa Housemade Desserts

With not much room to spare, we continued on our LON’s gastronomic tour to the desserts by Pastry Chef Trevor Tucker. Like one dessert wasn’t enough after our fabulous feasting, we had to try a spectrum of sweets. We ordered the signature LOU’s Candy Bar (like a gourmet snickers bar), three different housemade sorbets including the Mandarin Orange and the Huckleberry Tart with Crème Fraiche. Each of the desserts were made with an eye for detail and creativity like the appetizers and entrees, but the sorbets were my favorite – light and subtly sweet – a perfect ending to a heavy meal.

Happy to move about after dinner, we took a tour of Hermosa Inn’s wine cellar. A trip down below is like traveling from the Old West to the Renaissance Age.

LOU's at the Hermosa Wine Cellar

The wine cellar, adorned with well-appointed antiques, seats up to twenty people around a rustic wooden table for private parties, wine tasting events and dinners. Since 1996, Wine Spectator Magazine has consistently recognized LOU’s wine menu with an Award of Excellence. They offer both international and domestic wines, and even a few Arizona wines – a sommelier is on staff to assist in the choice.

Because we had come from Los Angeles for a little getaway to Hermosa Inn, it made it a perfect night that we could just slip off to our rooms, enjoy a soak in the Jacuzzi and have a peaceful sleep in Scottsdale’s hidden gem boutique hotel.

Scottsdale's Hidden Gem, Hermosa Inn

With the holidays upon us, giving a gift of a weekend at Hermosa Inn with a dinner at LOU’s would be something your loved one won’t return. A Night at LON’s package offers a quintessential guest experience with a one-night stay in a newly remodeled casita, $100 dining credit towards LON’s restaurant, breakfast for two and specialty turndown service. Starting from $332.

Also available is the Artist In Residence Dinner once a month with dining and accommodation specials.

The annual Artist-in-Residence Series is inspired by Hermosa Inn’s creative roots as it was the private residence of renowned cowboy artist Lon Megargee.

“Bringing well-known artists and authors here for intimate gatherings was what Lon himself might have done,” comments Fred Unger, who owns the Hermosa Inn with his wife, Jennifer. “Even today, the residential feel and cozy scale of the inn make it a natural choice for salon-style evenings.”

An evening with the first black female journalist of the western U.S., Belva Davis, will launch the 1930’s historic Hermosa Inn’s Artist in Residence Series on October 12, 2011 at 6:30 pm. Davis will speak about how she overcame racism and sexism, helping forever change the face of TV news. Belva Davis will be signing her memoir, Never in My Wildest Dreams, at the end of the evening. Tickets are $125 which includes both the talk with Belva Davis and a four-course dinner paired with wines at LON’s.

Temecula, located 90 minutes south from Los Angeles, has a peppered history of bank robbers, floods, fires, moonshine making and cattle ranching. A visit to Old Town Temecula with many of its historic buildings from the 1880’s still preserved allows, with some imagination, this colorful past to come alive.

Old Town Temecula Guide

Exploring the quaint town over two days, I compiled the best stops to hit, from wine tasting to antique shopping, when you visit:

Temecula Olive Oil Company – Visit this family owned business to taste handmade California olive oils, vinegars, and condiments.

Sonoma County is a refreshing travel destination for an urbanite like myself as it is a community of like-minded people that are ‘terroir-conscious’ and are connected to the full circle of life. They demonstrate a ‘craftsmanship over commercialism’ by buying each others’ products. This is evident with common Sonoman sayings touted by locals like “Eat Your Locals” or “Know the Face that Feeds You”.

For these reasons, Sonoma is an inspiration of what we must return to if we are to overcome the latest S&P credit rating downgrade, the skyrocketing joblessness and overall recession – small, privately owned businesses with passionate owners producing quality handcrafted products. Main Street must trump Wall Street again and Sonoma makes us belief it’s not only possible but profitable as well.

I went to Sonoma recently to seek out artisanal restaurants with passionate chefs serving local produce, meats and fish. And the brilliant principle behind this approach is that it is not only earth-friendly but each dish explodes with flavor. Make sure to sample the delicious ‘fruits’ of these four chefs’ devoted labor of love. No doubt, before you’ve had your last bite, you’ll be planning your next visit to Sonoma County.

Zazu Restaurant

Chefs Duskie Estes and John Stewart of Zazu Restaurant and Bovolo were one of the earliest evangelists of the Sonoman motto, “Know the Face that Feeds You”. Their own farm supplies up to 30% of their menu’s vegetable and pork products at peak, otherwise they buy from local farmers. They even have a “You Pick It” night where guests are encouraged to harvest vegetables from the garden outback and Chef Duskie serves it up in manner that “eating your veggies” takes on a new taste bud thrill.

The cozy restaurant was buzzing (it was a Wednesday night and jamming) with diners enjoying plates of American classic faire with an incredible twist of ingenuity and occasional international flair. An example of this global influence was the “I Heart Pork Bun” – a masterful riff on the Vietnamese classic made of finely shredded pig heart.

And on any given night in Zazu Restaurant, as this is a local operation with the owners present and accessible, Duskie, John or their adorable children may be seen chatting up friends and strangers alike about which homemade gelato to sample or like proud parents, showing off their pig photos on their i-phone. Be sure to also check out their ‘slow food served fast’ café in Healdsburg – Bovolo. www.zazurestaurant.com, www.bovolo.com

Estate

As the queen of Sonoma farm-to-table dining, Sondra Bernstein reigns supreme with two extremely different restaurants with the same mission – serving up local produce and meats from her own organic farm. Estate, in a refurbished, stately Victorian home, pays homage to Sonoma’s Italian roots and serves elegant Italian cuisine.

From the highly engineered cocktail menu to the Pizza del Giorno to family style dining at $26 per person, Estate will appease the most die-hard foodie. For an aperitif, try the Fellini with prosecco, blood orange juice and HelloCello Limoncello. For your Primi, the Coriander Fazzoletti is a divinely inspired risotto dish of house-smoke ricotta, pork sugo and spinach. Save room for dessert, Estate has spectacular homemade treats. If cheese and charcuterie is what you crave, take a seat at the cozy Grappa bar and splurge on a flight of local artisanal Grappas.

While in Sonoma, a lunch or dinner at Sondra’s first world-renowned restaurant, the French-inspired the Girl & the Fig is also a must. Or do a Bernstein crawl, having a nibble from each as they are only a few blocks from each other on the same street. www.estate-sonoma.com,

Vineyards Inn

As pioneers of the green movement in Sonoma County, Steve & Colleen Rose of Rose Ranch and Vineyards Inn Restaurant have been doing the whole composting, biodynamic winemaking, and pesticide-free farming thing way before it was trendy – almost 30 years in fact. Their claim to fame is “The Greenest Restaurant in the San Francisco Bay Area”.

Not only are they serious about preserving the planet for future generations, but Steve aka Chef Esteban has a fierce fervor, like a true Spaniard, for cooking up Spanish-inspired dishes. Don’t miss the garden-raised stuffed Piquillo Peppers, Paella Valenciana with homemade chorizo or the Fries with Eyes. The Vineyards Inn also features both a Tapas themed night and Basque family-style dinners on alternating Thursdays. Pairing perfectly with these California-Spanish dishes is their own organic Rose Ranch red and rose wine served on ‘tap’ and exclusively on site. Ask for Harry’s Blend or Margarita’s Rose, named after Steve’s parents.

For the complete ‘green’ experience, stay at their aptly named Casa Verde, a quaint B&B with tranquil views of farmland and vineyards. Beverly, Colleen’s mom, serves up a mean breakfast and then later, if you’re well behaved, freshly baked chocolate chip cookies and milk. www.vineyardsinn.com

With direct access from Hwy 121, Viansa Winery & Marketplace is a brilliant initiation to Sonoma Wine Country. Sonoma County has long been synonymous with the Italian heritage; many of the early settlers of the valley were originally from Southern Italy. Therefore, the Tuscan-themed property of Viansa Winery that greeted us was a fitting homage to the Italian traditions and style.

Wine Tasting Bouncer

Our host was waiting in the peaceful courtyard, ready to direct us, as there were many options to explore on the lush, opulent Viansa property. Our attention was piqued when we heard that it was part of his job to direct buses, especially those without appointments.

An appointment for a wine tasting? Oh yes, due to Viansa’s gorgeous grounds and gourmet market, it is a popular stop for busloads of wine tourists, yet, Viansa Winery & Marketplace is vigilant in giving each guest special attention and maintaining the property’s tranquil nature, so they have a wine tasting bouncer of sorts. Even though we were assured that they keep an even flow of guests, we proceeded to the tasting room with much trepidation with visions of wading through the Disneyland type of hordes.

Picture-Perfect Picnic

Ascending the stairway laced with verdant vines, we passed Dogwood roses, Italian cypress and olive trees to find an incredible vista, resplendent with all that is Sonoma wine country – rolling hills, villas nestled between vineyards, farm houses, flower gardens, and even protected wetlands. Viansa Winery is situated at the crest of the hill, providing stunning views of Sonoma Valley for those who like to picnic with a bottle of Viansa wine.

Viansa Tasting Room & Marketplace

And no surprise, couples and groups were doing just that – enjoying the standard repast of wine, cheese and local baguettes under Sonoma’s clear blue sky. On first glance, before entering the Viansa Marketplace, it appeared the picnickers had packed exquisite bag lunches of salumi, fig spreads, and both Italian and Sonoman cheeses. But we discovered that most guests after the wine tasting buy the gourmet picnic items right on the property making it the perfect afternoon delight.

Upon entering the Viansa tasting room and marketplace, our fears of overcrowding from the wine bus tours subsided. The room had ample space for both shopping and tasting. Two tasting bars at opposite ends with plenty of staff can readily accommodate at least twenty to thirty people each. Although it wasn’t the weekend, every station in the tasting room was complete with friendly, knowledgeable assistants.

Rare and Well-Known Italian Varietals

Viansa Winery’s tasting menu includes up to 19 wines to choose from – a crowd-pleaser for both a wine enthusiast and an occasional dabbler. We enjoyed sampling the specialty wines of Viansa, Italian varietals both readily available (Barbera and Pinot Grigio) and those less common (Arneis and Vernaccia).

The strong mineral wash and fruity nose of the 2010 Viansa Arneis is a worthy diversion for the Sauvignon Blanc aficionado. The reds came as big or subtle as you please with Viansa’s Ossidiana – a bold blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot – or the softer 2005 Thalia Sangiovese. The 2006 Ossidiana, Viansa’s flagship wine in a sleek black bottle, is a perfect gift to let the wine lover in your life know their appreciated at $125 a bottle. Viansa Winery also produces popular California wine varietals including Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc.

Cheese Please!

Another great feature of the Viansa’s tasting room is their “Italian Wine and Cheese Pairing” option. During this tasting, they pair five of Viansa’s Italian varietal wines with five different cheeses and Viansa condiments, $25 per person. Be sure to reserve your spot ahead of time.

A must-try of the Italian cheeses at Viansa Winery & Marketplace is the Sottocerre – an exceptional pairing with any of the reds. Even a casual gourmand will detect the unmistakable yet scrumptious scent of truffle, dirt and all. Just as dark chocolate can stand up to the bigger reds, so can this brawny cheese. With charcuterie and fresh bread, everything needed for the tapa or sandwich lover is available. Again, there is truly something for everyone, the best of California and Italy with a few other delicacies thrown in for good gastronomic measure.

If you prefer a little spice or sweetness with the cheese and wine, make your way to the sampling area where many unique and delicious condiments such as jams, chutneys, mustards and sauces are available. Our favorites were the Fig and Red Onion Chutney, the Chardonnay Tomato Sauce, and the Cabernet Wine Conserve. Besides the ready gifts found in the condiment section, there are additional shopping opportunities in the Marketplace such as wine accessories and kitchen supplies.

Wine Country Weddings

In addition to providing rest and refueling, Viansa Winery is a picture-perfect venue for special occasions. Close to the San Francisco Bay area, this site is a magical location for a Wine Country wedding. According to Viansa Winery’s owner, Lloyd Davis, they host over 100 weddings a year. With the incredible backdrop for those photo-ops come an enclosed outdoor tent and beautiful grounds to accommodate the wedding reception. There are several places, including the stately courtyard, for the actual ceremony. While we were wine tasting, a couple from Ohio were visiting Viansa to book their destination wedding. Now that’s a wedding worth traveling for!

Benefits of Tuscan Membership

Another reason to travel to Viansa Winery & Marketplace is their made-to-order pizzas fresh from the outdoor wood-burning oven at their Pizza & Wine event. Imagine you and your guests designing your own pizzas, sipping on the 2009 Scintillare sparkling wine while playing a game of bocce as you wait for the traditional Italian treat. Viansa Winery regularly hosts food and wine pairings especially for their ‘Tuscan’ members. These monthly events provide wonderful opportunities to fully experience the gustatory and convivial qualities of the property.

Old World Enoteca

Also on-site for wine and food pairing events is the enchanting Enoteca (Italian word for wine library). The Enoteca is a cozy wine cellar available to rent for private dinner parties with a rustic wooden table surrounded by the Viansa’s most treasured bottles. Viansa’s Enoteca is reminiscent of a something you would find in a centuries old wine cellar in France or Italy.

Remaining true to the Italian traditions of winemaking, handmade food and familial gatherings is the essence of Viansa Winery and Marketplace. Don’t miss Sonoma’s taste of Tuscany at Viansa Winery & Marketplace, open daily 10 am – 5 pm.

The Fairmont Banff Springs in Banff, Canada are what fairy tales are made of … with its towering gray stone architecture piercing the vivid green-blue landscape of the Canadian Rocky mountains, one expects the Royals to wave from a window at any minute (in fact, six British Royals have stayed here over the years, including the Queen).

The original hotel modeled after a Scottish castle was built in 1888 and a genius way to attract visitors to enjoy the breathtaking scenery and outdoor activites of Banff and its surrounding towns via the Canadian Pacific Railway. Since the bigger and better rebuild in 1928 after a fire burned it to the ground and another recent $75 million restoration complete, The Fairmont Banff Springs lives up to its 19th century marketing slogan as the “Finest Hotel in the North American Continent”.

Entering the grand lobby, the atmosphere was charged with nostalgia. Even the rooms, each distinct in their decoration and configuration, had a distinct past. The conviviality enjoyed by guests from ages past and present was prevalent throughout the property. My favorite public space on the Fairmont Banff Springs property was the Mount Stephen Hall which firmly establishes it as “The Castle in the Rockies.” One can imagine the Queen of England greeting her guests from the balconies above.

All 768 rooms have stunning views, either of the mountain or the valley. My room looked out on to the valley and what a sense of tranquility it gave to start and end the day taking in the sunlight as it highlighted the verdant pine trees and the midnight blue river flowing towards the town of Banff.

Another thrilling experience for me at the Fairmont Banff Springs, besides exploring the enormous property, was unwinding in the outdoor Jacuzzi at the Willow Springs Spa with the cool mountain air nipping at my nose while reveling at the majestic scenery.

After taking a guided hike, which all the Fairmont Hotels of the Canadian Rockies are known for having the most reputable nature guides, I had a traditional German meal of Wiener Schnitzel, truffle fondue and ice wine at Waldhaus – their Bavarian themed restaurant and pub. I would have preferred to walk, as it was a picturesque stroll from the hotel, but it was raining, so a shuttle was gratefully provided.

Before going off for the day to explore the quaint town of Banff, a stop at the 24-hour Castle Pantry, stocked with homemade granola bars, gourmet sandwiches, European chocolates and designer beverages is a delight.

There is so much to see and do in the Banff and Lake Louise area that two nights was not enough to enjoy and explore all the mysteries and intrigues of the Fairmont Banff Springs. Winter promises to be yet another storybook dream-come-true, so I will return to enjoy Banff’s skiing, dog-sledding and ice skating while reveling in the long history of hospitality at the majestic Fairmont Banff Springs…

Getting to Banff, Alberta

The most convenient and economical route to Fairmont Banff Springs is on a direct WestJet flight from Orange County to Calgary – it’s 2 ½ hours and each way is $129. From Calgary, it’s a beautiful 1 hour drive to Banff. www.westjet.com

Wine tasting is not the only way to appreciate the fruits of the vine. Just ten minutes from the city of Sonoma, Kenwood Inn and Spa fully embrace the power of the grape beyond the taste buds. Recognized in successive years as one of the leading spas in the country by Condé Nast Traveler Magazine, Kenwood Inn and Spa, on the Tuscan-inspired property, offers a unique spa menu paying tribute to the hundreds of verdant vineyards that surround the inn - Vinotherapy.

My mission, over three days, was to explore Sonoma County’s rich local economy that springs from the products of local farmers and ranchers. I was thrilled to learn of Kenwood Inn and Spa’s Vinotherapy as Sonoman wine country solely inspires their spa menu. Kenwood Inn and Spa’s Vinotherapy treatments use custom made organic products of red wine extracts, Chardonnay and Riesling Oils. The grape seed is known for its protective qualities.

As we weaved our way through the quaint Kenwood Inn and Spa property, past the tree-shaded pool, my mother and I found the spa tucked into an intimate corner – perfect for creating a feeling of exclusivity. Upon checking in, we were graciously ushered into a cozy, fireplace lit room stocked with prosecco, sherry, port, and chocolates. I know there was fresh fruit as well, but who needs fruit when you can have a bon-bon for breakfast!

Raina greeted me and ushered me back to a small room for my Harvest Sugar Scrub. Raina was as sweet as the sugar she was scrubbing me with and was also an organic farmer herself! Love Sonomans and their respect for the land and a simpler lifestyle, much like our grandparents or great-grandparents would have lived.

My mom and I showing off our glowing skin after Kenwood Inn's Spa.

The Harvest Sugar Scrub, $135 for 50 minutes, was much more gentle than I thought as I was used to authentic Korean scrubs where your hide is literally scoured right off. Needless to say, it was relaxing, the grape oil aroma soothing and afterward my skin was glowing and silken. And I could now officially proclaim I was marinated in wine both inside and out!

My mother enjoyed Kenwood Inn and Spa’s Signature Facial, aptly named, the Wine Country Facial, $135 for 50 minutes. This facial incorporates high-tech is Clinical treatment serums rich with anti-oxidants and bioflavinoids.

Afterward, we met up and enjoyed Kenwood Inn and Spa’s three-waterfall indoor Jacuzzi, adjoining steam room and outdoor pool. My mother and I were so pleased with the way our skin looked, we went unabashedly make-up free to our lunch down the road at the farm-to-table restaurant, Vineyards Inn.

After a long day of vineyard touring and wine tasting, it is a great way to complete the cycle so to speak with Kenwood Inn and Spa’s Vinotherapy treatments. Here are a few other wine treatments to try out as well:

Kenwood Wine Wrap – $175 for 80 minutes

Application of a luscious combination of clays, red wine extract, rosemary hydrosol and a combination of essential oils. This wrap is great for detoxing the body and stimulating the circulation system. Begins with a full body dry brush to prepare the skin and concludes with a hydrating application of our signature grape seed lotion consisting of chardonnay oil, Riesling oil, and red wine extract. This treatment includes a neck, shoulder and scalp massage.

Kenwood Wine Bath - $55 for 20 minutes

Soak in Kenwood’s luxurious oversized jacuzzi tub overlooking the vineyards before or after your spa treatments. This aromatic bath will soothe the senses and help to relieve tired muscles.

A Weekend of Tasting and Relaxing

Kenwood Inn and Spa offers cozy yet luxurious rooms to stay at to expand your spa treatment into an Italian country retreat. Ask for their Bella Vita package (starting at $765.00 for double occupancy) that includes:

* Two Night Stay
* Seasonal food and wine flight tasting for two (available 5-10pm)

“I don’t need to do anything else,” my mother gleefully pronounced after she surveyed the lush, English gardens and opulent suite at MacArthur Place Inn in Sonoma. This was a good start to our Sonoma Mother/Daughter getaway. Mom was pleased as wine punch with MacArthur Place Inn that she could literally do nothing else but relax, read a book on our old-fashioned porch or play ping-pong by the pool. And that’s a grand statement for a self-proclaimed type-A personality to make as Sonoma County offers a bounty of exhilarating activities to do while staying at the MacArthur Place Inn like wine tastings, artist studio visits, and farm-to-table dining. Yet the most priceless aspect of a vacation is the opportunity to unplug from daily demands in a peaceful environment.

As my mother reiterated in many fashions during our vacation, MacArthur Place Inn facilitates this. Picture yourself with your cell phone off, liberated from time constraints, playing checkers as the fountain peacefully gurgles in the background.

Or this – you decide to saunter the English-style garden maze in search of the secret hideaways and local artists’ sculptures before the 5 pm cheese and wine hour in the stately library. Or how about this idyllic scene: relish in a nature-inspired spa treatment like Lavender Dreams or the Rose Garden massage at their appropriately named Garden Spa. It’s a wonderful destination to perfect the art of doing nothing.

19th Century Working Farm & Vineyard

Staying with the country-farm theme, as MacArthur Place was originally a working ranch and vineyard, each of the Inn’s 64 rooms and suites are uniquely furnished and decorated. But not to worry, you won’t have to sleep on a farmer’s authentic bed of straw. Their beds, fashioned with down comforters and custom linens, are the perfect balance of inviting fluffiness and firmness so you wake up refreshed.

Historical and Modern Options

If you prefer historical lodging, the Manor House, the property’s original residence of the 1850’s, offers ten rooms to stay in. MacArthur Place Inn also has swanky, modern suites outfitted with fireplaces, original art, hydrotherapy tubs, a wet bar with so large you could host a party with it, and an outdoor private patio complete with a cabana shower and fountain. Being an outdoor lover, Mom spent a lot of time with her shoes kicked off lounging on our tranquil patio.

Locals Endorse MacArthur Place Inn Too

So my mom was an instant and ecstatic fan of MacArthur and if she had a facebook, I’m sure she would have directly ‘Liked’ MacArthur Place and added it as one of her Facebook ‘friends’ – but she and I were outsiders, not a reliable source for a testimony of praise as there are many boutique hotels in Sonoma County.

This is where the Sonoma locals were priceless. Traveling as much as I do, I rely almost solely on the kindness of strangers for recommendations about experiences only a local would know. This was the true testament to MacArthur Place’s spellbinding charm – locals offered unsolicited praise.

Lloyd Davis, owner of Sonoma’s Viansa Winery that specializes in unique Italian varietals, said he stays at MacArthur Place Inn any chance he gets when he’s in town. He also raved about MacArthur’s Saddles Steakhouse and the grass-fed, Kobe beef they served.

Local Sonoman cheesemaker Sheana Davis who also own the gourmet cheese shop Epicurean Connection, excitedly exclaimed that she goes to MacArthur Place Inn regularly for a rejuvenating stay-cation with her girlfriends. She also said she books her parents there when they come to visit.

Central Yet Secluded

Sonoman residents probably love MacArthur Place Inn for another reason as well. It is located directly off the main highway 12 that runs through Sonoma County and a ten-minute walk to the bustling town square of Sonoma yet it retains the feeling of a secluded retreat. It is also a ten-minute bike ride to gawk at Sonoma’s stunning historical Victorian homes and wine taste at Sonoma’s oldest winery founded in 1857 – Buena Vista Winery.

Biking Balances Hedonism

After much imbibing and feasting on Sonoma’s plentiful wine and local gourmet cuisine, a bike ride is a perfect way to give the body a much-needed gastronomical respite. Not only will your digestion system thank you, but the sensory high and tranquil beauty that Sonoma via bike offers is not to be missed.

For my mother who only rides a bike once a decade, she stated with conviction, “For a non-bike rider who can’t wait to get off a bike, I could ride around Sonoma all day.”

Ask MacArthur Place’s concierge for a bike route map and be sure to hit all the spots they highlight for you. For $10 an hour, it’s the most magical (and economical) way to explore the town of Sonoma. Early morning rides are best to get the most peaceful ride while avoiding the mid-day heat.

To impress your own mom or anyone else with a retreat in the heart of Sonoma at MacArthur Place Inn & Spa, book online at www.macarthurplace.com.

Review their July specials on spa treatments and room rates.

The royal couple landed in Los Angeles, at LAX around 4 p.m. It is Kate Middleton’s first US visit. A multitude of guards departed the plane first to secure the surroundings, and Southern California was graced by the elegance and grace of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. The couple was greeted L.A. city officials, including Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and Governor of California Jerry Brown. They then headed over to the Beverly Hilton to take care of some business before their evening’s agenda.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge attended Variety magazine’s Venture Capital and New Media Summit in Beverly Hills on Friday afternoon. They are expected to stay at the British Consul General residence in Hancock Park.

On Saturday, the royal couple plans to head to Santa Barbara for a charity polo match. William will play in the tournament and Kate is set to present a Tiffany & Co. trophy to the winning team. The two will later return to Los Angeles for a BAFTA event.

Sunday, July 10, is the final date of their U.S. visit. That day, the two plan to meet with kids at the Inner-City Arts in the impoverished area of Skid Row and visit veterans and military families at a job fair in Culver City.
