The Cancun Convention & Visitors Bureau (CVB) launched its new promotional campaign and tourism route “Cancun and the Treasures of the Caribbean” during events held from February 28th to March 6th, 2010, which highlighted great fashion and innovative designers. LA’s The Place was graciously invited to come along for this amazing week, to share it all it with our readers.

The campaign featured world renown-international designers such as Spain’s Agatha Ruiz de la Prada, Mexico’s Pineda Covalin, David Salomon, Daniel Espinosa, and Erika Flores. Together they presented the best of their spring-summer collections, using Cancun and its nearby treasures as a backdrop.

State and local officials attended the launch and after the show, renowned chefs were invited to showcase all the gastronomic richness Cancun and the Treasures of the Caribbean has to offer. Dishes such as traditional tikinxic style fish or the lobster pizza, to the elaborate international gourmet dishes were served. Cancun chefs John Gray, Federico Lopez, Alain Grimond, Heriberto Gomez, Cristian Morales, and Juan Garcia showcased some of their most recognized culinary creations in a sampling dinner during the launch of this tourism route.

Increasing Tourism

Director of the Cancun CVB, Jesus Almaguer, said that approximately $500,000 will be invested this year in promoting tourism routes throughout international tourism tradeshows, to attract premier class of tourism and increase the average stay in the Mexican Caribbean from five to seven nights.

Cancun has created a unique five-day route that offers visitors a chance to experience adventure and interaction with nature. This new attraction adds to the destination spot known as the most popular tourism destination in Mexico and Latin America. The campaign is aimed at inviting everyone to discover the vast natural, cultural, and gastronomical cultures of Puerto Morelos, and the four islands of the Mexican Caribbean. In Holbox, you can swim with the sharks. At Isla Mujeres, ancient pirate history can be relived. In Contoy, there is a colorful sanctuary of birds for you to enjoy. Cozumel offers an exploration of the world’s extensive underground river system.

Along with the tourism industry and the Tourism Promotion Funds of Isla Mujeres and Cozumel, Cancun CVB prepared a special program. The program celebrated the launch of Cancun and the Treasures of the Caribbean with the presence of national and international members of the press specializing in fashion, adventure, and gastronomy who received the chance to experience the potential of the route.

The Cancun CVB highlighted that the main companies specialized in adventure tourism also participated in the program. They showed the journalists the assorted range of activities that can be done in the destinations that make up this route.

LA’s The Place sent Jennifer Murphy as correspondant. Here are here words as she experienced this lovely agenda. In her words:

My trip to Cancun began with the smilings faces of the locals…happy hearted people who instantly made me feel warm and welcome. As I walked into the stunning lobby of Le Meridien Hotel I was greeted by a woman from the spa who offered me a frozen mango drink in a small glass. She asked me in well spoken English how my flight had been and wished me a wonderful stay. She suggested I take a tour of the resort and spa to become familiar with all of the amenities and grounds.

I was shown through the main lobby and down the beautifully decorated hallway and into their world-class Four-Diamond restaurant. The hostess gave me a brief overview of the menu, which features an exquisite international dishes made with special ingredients, spices, and regional delicacies prepared with a Latin flair.

I was then led outside and down the curved stone walkway toward the stunning white-sand beach and turquoise water, passing by a huge pool, hot tub, outdoor restaurant and comfortable looking lounge chairs. The weather was perfect, the sun shining brightly with a slight breeze adding just a slight coolness to the air. Right then I decided that the first item on my agenda was to put on my swimsuit and claim one of the lounge chairs on the sandy beach closest to point where the waves gently hit the sand.

The beautiful pool

After a tour of the huge, state-of-the-art fitness center, I was brought downstairs to the internationally acclaimed luxury spa. I was immediately impressed with the tranquil aura that combine old world décor with a modern style and feel. I glanced at the menu of services to discover that they combined ancient techniques with indigenous traditional services. The lengthy list of massage and treatment options sent a series of chills through my body as I imagined myself receiving a relaxing Swedish massage followed by an invigorating citrus body scrub. I noticed the designer salon attached to the spa and made a mental note to set an appointment for the next afternoon.

When I entered my room I was delighted to see the bright and crisp look that helped retain the lightness of mood I had been developing from the moment I stepped foot in Cancun. Beautiful, modern furniture, marble surfaces, designer fixtures and a captivating modern painting on the wall near the bed had me feeling like a princess. As I unpacked and threw on my swimsuit I went on to notice that in addition to the over-sized marble shower there was also a jacuzzi tub!

Although I was still soaking in the room, the urge to soak up some rays on the beach was calling me. I grabbed my sunglasses, room key, beach bag and camera and headed back out to paradise.

I had heard about the hurricane that had destroyed the beaches of Cancun for a time, leaving some spots along the strip reduced to nothing, just rocks and water crashing against the barrier walls. Now, after an $8.5 million dollar recovery project, the stretch of sand is huge, perfect for football, lazing in the sun, flying kites or romping in the surf. For me, they were the perfect canvass on which to lay my eyes and clear my mind as I bathed in the sun and sipped a Corona with lime. Ahh, paradise at last.

The next morning I awoke feeling completely rested and in an adventurous mood. I decided to pay a visit to the activities center and look into the excursion options. The friendly man behind the counter gladly went through a wide variety of outings and activities, describing each one and highlighting the most popular choices. Within minutes, I decided on the snorkeling and boat ride excursion at Aquaworld, just a short distance down the road from Le Meridien.

View of the boats

Later that morning as I boarded the mid-sized boat that was docked at Aquaworld, I glanced around at the couples, individuals and one small family of four, including two adorable and well-behaved children. We pulled away from the dock and quickly picked up speed. The scenery was breathtaking and the air was slightly salty with just a hint of moisture that kept me at just the right temperature. I knew to apply sunscreen several times during the day, aware that the rays from the sun were stronger than they felt.

The boat ride was fun and easy. I was offered beer, soda or fresh orange juice from one of the company employees. Although we were moving along at a decent speed, I could easily walk from one side of the boat to the other, or even climb the ladder up to the top deck of the boat where about a third of the other passengers had congregated. Everyone was laughing and having a great time, especially the two children. After about thirty minutes we pulled up to the side of another larger boat that was anchored in place about half a mile off the shore. We suited up in our life jackets and were given simple instructions and tips on how to use the snorkel. As I walked onto the step on the back of the boat that was partially submerged in the turquoise water I felt the cool but inviting water around my feet. As my body adjusted to the temperature I jumped and was ready to go explore with my tour guide in the lead.

We swam as a group, in a chain that followed the guide. He took us to the places nearby where we could see in detail the coral and rock formations just beneath the surface. There were schools of fish that swam along as if we were not there, and the sun shone through the water and lit up even the smallest shells on the sandy floor below.

View in the water

When I returned to the boat I again applied sunscreen, and stretched out on my towel on the large upper deck. I dozed off for just a few minutes before it was time to re-board the other boat and head back to Aquaworld. By the time we returned I was growing very hungry and was thrilled when a staff member asked me if I would like to order a hamburger or sandwich. They served me a delicious cheeseburger that I loaded up with toppings from the salad bar, along with a colorful side of fruit salad. After devouring my lunch I returned to Le Meridien with a little time to spare before my scheduled spa and salon services.

Lying out on the deck, taking in the sun

Over the next five days the only struggle I would have would be deciding whether I wanted to lay out on the beach or go explore another treasure of Cancun.

Zip lining through the trees

I ended up striking the perfect balance of fun and relaxation during my stay in Cancun. From zip lining through the beautiful Yucatan Mayan Jungle to shopping at an authentic Mexican flea market, I saw why Cancun draws visitors from all over the globe. The high class resorts really roll out the red carpet treatment for every their guests and make you feel like royalty. The locals warm your heart with their genuine hospitality and desire to make you feel welcome. Cancun is truly full of incredible treasures that should be experienced by everyone.

One of my favorite adventures during my trip was an afternoon spent at The Me Cancun, an incredible 10,000 square foot hotel that is decked out with the latest tech toys, lavish amenities and contemporary furnishings and provides an endless panoramic view of the Caribbean. I attended a cooking class with the master chef of the five -star restaurant inside who demonstrated how to make three of the most popular dishes on the menu. He gave a very personal and detailed cooking lesson to our small group of five, and then served us each of the dishes we had helped prepare. We learned some of his Spain infused traditions that he incorporates into his cooking style, and enjoyed a fruity and light version of Sangria along with our meal.

Guests enjoying the fashion show

Another trip highlight was the fashion show I attending on the beach at La Amada Hotel and Marina, showcasing some of the top Mexican designers and their upcoming lines. A blue sky with lightly feathered white clouds provided a picture perfect canopy for the high fashion show that took place on a white runway that had been constructed about one hundred feet from the shoreline. I have been to many fashion shows in Los Angeles and New York, but this was special. The designers featured included Pined –Covalin, Erika Flores, Daniel Espinosa, David Salomon, and Agatha Ruiz de la Prada. The Governor of Cancun attended the event which also served as a celebration of the newly restored beaches and shoreline.

Preparing dinner for the night

Following the show was a dinner at La Amada’s outdoor/indoor restaurant featuring a five-course meal prepared by five of the top chefs in Cancun including Heriberto Gomez, Alain Grimmond, Federico Lopez, Juan Garcia & Christian Morales. The food and dining experience was out-of-this-world and it will be an evening that I will never forget. The staff and surroundings were impeccable and I was intrigued when I realized that La Amada also includes a large number of condos and residences for lease or sale.

Le Meridien

Although I was spoiled after dining at the Me and La Amada, I did venture to other restaurants and night spots during my stay. The Crab Pot was one restaurant that I plan to visit again on future trips, offering an assortment of fresh fish and seafood that are as inviting to the senses as is the décor. The manager paid a special visit to my table and surprised me with a dessert that was on-the-house. It is the little things like that combined with the treasures that I discovered each and every day in Cancun that spurred me to start contemplating my return trip before I had even left.

The reassurances of Cancun truly are some of the most relaxing, awe-inspiring and fun-filled memories I have taken from a vacation. I cannot wait to return. In the meantime, I carry inside the smile and warmth that I received from the people I met each day of my trip.

About Cancun

Cancun is located in the northern part of the southeastern Mexican state of Quintana Roo. The island of Cancun is in the shape of a “7” and is bordered to the north by the Bahia de Mujeres; to the east by the Caribbean Sea; and to the west by the Nichupte Lagoon. Cancun is Mexico’s largest tourist destination and boasts 146 hotels with a total of 28,808 rooms. Opportunities for new experiences abound in Cancun, which offers visitors an ideal setting for interacting with nature and discovering Mayan culture.

What do you think of when you hear the words “wine country”? Do you picture rolling hills in France? Perhaps the valleys of Napa or Sonoma in California?

If you said any of those things, you’d be absolutely right. Without a doubt, they produce some of the best wines in the world.

One of California’s best kept secrets, however, is 250 miles south of Napa and a hair north of San Luis Obispo – a town whose culture and heritage match its rich, 120 year history of fine winemaking: Paso Robles, CA.

Though its full name is El Paso de Robles, residents affectionately refer to their town simply as “Paso”.

When you first arrive, you’ll immediately realize that Paso Robles is nothing like LA or San Francisco or even Napa.

Everything is a bit slower. Everyone is a bit more polite. The air is crisper, and somehow, colors seem brighter.

Sunset on Paso's Town Center

But make no mistake, despite being situated among miles of farms and rolling pastures, Paso is no stranger to privilege.

In a nutshell, Paso features the accessibility of a small town with the amenities and luxuries of a much larger metropolis.

History

A 6.1 magnitude earthquake struck Paso Robles in 2003, one building fell and many other buildings were retrofitted. As a result, Paso boasts more than 60 new buildings, many of which are quickly becoming centers of culture and luxury.

Hotel Cheval

Hotel Cheval

Hotel Cheval is, without a doubt, the premiere hotel destination in Paso Robles. Located conveniently adjacent to the town’s central square, Hotel Cheval offers walking access to the finest restaurants and shops in Paso Robles.

The design of the hotel is reminiscent of a rare blend of elegance and practicality often missed by other establishments.

The 16-room hotel caters to the every need of its guests – offering an array of amenities including freshly baked welcome cookies, complimentary breakfast, in-room spa treatments, complimentary horse drawn carriage rides to local restaurants on Fridays and Saturdays, free Wi-Fi access, and many others.

Hotel Cheval's Guest Accomodations

Each room features a different design, accenting classical architecture with contemporary furnishings.

Hotel Cheval’s adjoining café, The Pony Club, features an impeccable selection of fine wine, beer, and champagne.

The Pony Club

Hotel Cheval features attractive rates starting at only $225 per night.

For reservations or inquiries, call 805-226-9995 or visit http://www.hotelcheval.com.

Studios on the Park

One of Paso Robles’ most popular destinations is the aptly named “Studios on the Park”. Right across the street from the town’s central park, Studios on the Park is a nonprofit, open studio that fosters interaction between some of Paso’s top artists and the general public.

The converted warehouse has been refinished entirely, providing ample space to house 9 studios for 24 artists and “The Showroom” – a gallery operated by the Paso Robles Art Association.

Local Artist Sally Tippman with an Original Piece

All of the artists in attendance are happy to converse with passersby or art critics alike.

For more information, visit http://www.studiosonthepark.org.

Fine Dining

Paso’s restaurants offer every type of standard fare, but a few in particular stand out.

First is Il Cortile Ristorante, specializing in the finest Italian dishes with a local flair. If you have the chance, try the carpaccio with black truffle shavings.

Il Cortile Ristorante

Il Cortile serves an array of imported and local wines, catering to every possible taste.

Next up is Artisan, another jewel in Paso’s dining crown. Artisan specializes in a unique American Bistro cuisine, using only the finest ingredients found locally and around the world. If you find yourself there for lunch, try the poached shrimp club or barbecued pulled organic chicken sandwich.

Visit Il Cortile Ristorante at http://ilcortileristorante.com and Artisan at http://www.artisanpasorobles.com.

RN Estate Vineyard

One of the area’s newest but most discerning vineyard proprietors is Roger Nicolas, a veteran of New York City’s exclusive restaurant scene.

RN Estate Vineyard is completely secluded from highway view – if you’re not paying close enough attention, you’ll miss it – for a reason. Nicolas was never interested in making hundreds of thousands of cases of wine. RN Estate Vineyard produces only around one thousand cases of wine each year. Each is personally crafted and cared for.

A View of RN Estate Vineyard

The result is an array of tastes and aromas that are both inviting and lasting. RN Estate offers both private tours and tastings for either the connoisseur or the layperson.

It’s not too late for a great Valentine’s Day Gift Ideas in Los Angeles!

Tikkun Holistic Spa is offering two specials for two love birds seeking refuge on Valentine’s Day. For sixty minutes, you and your Valentine will receive a luxurious Swedish Oil Massage. The massage is on special for $180 per couple. During the Swedish massage, gentle pressure is applied to sensitive areas so to improve circulation, ease tension from muscles, soothe muscle aches, and improve and promote flexibility.

Tikkun Holistic Spa is also extending another Valentine’s Day special. For $290, a couple is treated to a relaxing, therapeutic Hot Jade Stone Massage. The hot stones are placed all over the body and gentle pressure is applied to relieve tension, relax the muscles, and heighten the senses by increasing blood flow and oxygen levels. The heat from the stones increases circulation, thus the massage removes toxins and reduces stress.

Go to their website at www.tikkunspa.com for more information.

Inspired by “tikkun olam”, an ancient Hebrew phrase interpreted “repairing the world”, the services offered at the spa definitely compare to the standard set by its namesake. Tikkun Holistic Spa advances the ultimate in luxury and is framed by a uniquely stylish setting for traditional Korean spa treatments. Modern sensibility meets cultural distinction; a warm and contemporary space hosts an assortment of restorative treatments, holistic, health consultations, and Korean spa facilities.

Tikkun pays homage to time-honored Korean spa culture, advocating a holistic approach to health through an approach that favors the balance between personal well being and its peaceful, healing expression in the world. The result is a Santa Monica home for wellness that allows visitors a well deserved reprieve from the stress of the outside world.

The Jade Stone Hot/Cold Stone Massage balances the body with the healing energy of gemstones combined with a temperature therapy. Tikkun Holistic Spa uses smooth jade stones of varying weights, sizes, and temperatures conjoined with massage techniques that remove tension and restore energy. The hot jade stones strengthen and purify the body’s filtration systems, assisting in the removal of toxins.

The spa hosts many other notorious massage techniques, including Thai, Reflexology, Acupressure, Deep Tissue, Shiatsu, and Sports Massage.

Each room in the Tikkun Holistic Spa embraces a particular personality. For instance, inside the Korean Hwangto Clay Room, you’ll find yourself surrounded by hundreds of beautiful, intricate clay tiles decorating the walls. The tiles conceal the infrared panels, which soothe, detoxify, and alleviate the skin.

Also, the Tikkun Holistic Spa hosts a warm, welcoming, red-brick room deemed the Himalayan Salt Room. Himalayan salt blocks are thoughtfully laid out throughout each wall that conceal the infrared, warming panels. As you step into the room, you’ll walk on loose salt rocks that gently massage your feet. The Salt Room has a mat on the floor, with a wooden neck support.

Please, visit their website at www.tikkunspa.com for more information.

The Venetian, a resort, hotel, and casino, smelling the embers of competition, offered a stunning solution: the ladies were channeled down the Grand Canal in gondolas and serenaded with a Venetian aria. America’s most treasured sultanas glided through the virile Venetian streetscapes – beneath bridges, beside cafes, and under balconies. The Venetian, gondola tour concluded by carrying the contestants to a bridge in Saint Mark’s Square where a reception of sumptuous desserts awaited.

The Miss America Pageant

During a time when the role of women was changing from notions of fragility and delicacy to vigor and independence, Margaret Gorman in 1921 stood as the paradigm of her time and became the first Miss America. Ever since that year, the Miss America pageant has continued, and although the Apollonian is what mostly holds its’ audience, the pageant’s causatum is an affirming symbol of our modern days’ female archetype.

The competition is not only a parade of extreme beauty, smiles, and curls, but a production showcasing adroit talent, intelligence, and elegance. Accordingly, the winner allegorically signifies the exemplar female of our modern day.

The Miss America Pageant of 2010 will take place January 30, 2010, at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino. It will broadcast live on TLC. www.missamerica.org

The Venetian Hotel

The Venetian, a resort, hotel, and casino, is the quintessence of elegance and world-class gaming. Their supreme statute of servitude stems from their charming Venetian style, elegant accommodations, world-renowned casinos, and 21 of Las Vegas’ best causal and fine dining restaurants.

Moreover, The Venetian hosts the absolute best performances in all of Las Vegas. In February, The Venetian will continue to showcase The Phantom of the Opera, rated the #1 show in all of Las Vegas by the Las Vegas Review Journal. The spectacular has been playing for four years and continues to thrill its’ audience.

The Toronto Star stated that “even if you think you’ve seen the The Phantom of the Opera before, believe me, you’ve never seen it like this.” The Chicago Tribune affirmed that “there’s no longer any reason to see this show anywhere else.” Surely, it must have something going for it.

The fact that it was The Venetian who sailed the beautiful ladies of America around its’ canals is not surprising. Only the finest hotel in all of Las Vegas, and the world, standing as majestic and dignified as The Ventian is worthy of such an honor. www.venetian.com

I spent my next two nights as a guest at The Rendezvous, a very charming unique ten room bed and breakfast originally known as the Mira Loma when it opened its doors in the late 1930’s. The quaintly decorated rooms are theme-oriented. My room was named ‘Stagecoach’, which I thoroughly enjoyed. The other rooms are called Shake Rattle n’ Roll, Hawaiian Surf, Detroit Iron, Rebel Without a Cause, Honeymoon Hideaway, Crooners, Silver Screen, Sitcoms and Pretty in Pink which is a beautiful room dedicated to screen icon, Marilyn Monroe. It is said that Marilyn was fond of this room and hotel for its privacy and comfort compared to the popular Racquet Club, which was a favorite of celebrities but was also frequented by the media. Other stars that stayed at the Mira Loma included Hugh O’Brien, Veronica Lake and Gloria Swanson.

Beautiful scene at the Rendezvous.

R & R

The fresh, pleasing-to-the-eye 1950’s atmosphere is relaxing and tasteful. The outdoor pool is attractive, and the staff is friendly, diligent and attentive. The operative words here are service, rest and relaxation. During the daytime hours, popular songs from the 1950’s play softly in the background in the public areas adding to the very relaxing, fun and laid back atmosphere.

John Wayne’s Room

The room Stagecoach is dedicated to movie stars of 1950’s Westerns with a big nod to everyone’s favorite cowboy – The Duke, John Wayne. The room is extremely comfortable and cozy yet very roomy. Every day, fresh delicious brownies are placed bedside plus each room has a special collection of DVDs of movies and television shows in keeping with it’s theme – two very nice touches, not to mention the huge luxurious sunk in tub.

Hollywood Royalty

Poolside at sunset.

I was also thrilled to be staying in the Stagecoach room because on my Hollywood Icons TV show that I hosted about Marilyn Monroe, author John Gilmore shared with us that Marilyn told him Stagecoach was her favorite movie and that she wanted to do a Western film. Also on the show was Stanley Rubin, who went on to produce the Western “River of No Return” which she starred in with Robert Mitchum, Rory Calhoun and Tommy Rettig. In addition to this, I was a guest of my friends Kat Kramer and Karen Sharpe Kramer (filmmaker Stanley Kramer’s lovely family) at the A.M.P.A.S. Centennial Tribute to John Wayne a few years ago. Karen had co-starred with The Duke in “The High and the Mighty” and had won a Golden Globe as best newcomer in 1952. My personal and professional connections to Hollywood royalty resonated surprisingly and very pleasantly on this trip!

Award-winning Family Business

The Rendezvous is operated and owned by the Cohen family, who have years of experience in the hotel business. One of their other ventures is the highly respected, Shore House in Lake Tahoe where Marty Cohen serves as President of the Chamber of Commerce. Twenty-six year old son, dynamo Jake Cohen principally oversees The Rendezvous and recently won the 2009 California Hotel & Lodging Association’s Manager of the Year for Small Properties. He is also a great chef preparing Barbara’s (his mom’s) award-winning Monte Cristo for breakfast one day and a delicious turkey pesto and sun dried tomato omelet the next. Mrs. Cohen won first place for her Monte Cristo creation in the 1997 American Bed & Breakfast Associates Contest. Both meals were delicious and accompanied by a fresh fruit smoothie.

Walk of the Inns

That evening we took part in the very popular 14th annual Walk of the Inns which features 14 inns in the Historic Tennis Club Neighborhood beautifully decorated for the holidays, showcasing themselves for hundreds of locals and tourists. This year’s event included a Toys for Tots drive sponsored by the Marines at Twentynine Palms and was dedicated in loving memory to the late Jeannetta Dao, general manager of the Palm Springs Tennis Club. It began at the Palm Springs Art Museum and concluded at McCallum Adobe now the home of the Palm Springs Historical Society, the former home of the McCallum family, the first non-native Americans to settle permanently in the area in 1884.

Horse Drawn Carriage Tours

We enjoyed our tour via horse drawn carriage from Palm Springs Carriages which was really a treat. Frosty, our good spirited horse, was a beautiful Grey Percheron born in 1988, stood 17.1 hands high and was a svelte 2000 pounds. Mary Jo Ginther, the friendly director of the Palm Springs Bureau of Tourism says “The Walk of the Inns is a signature winter event in Palm Springs which spotlights our city’s unique small hotels. Locals and visitors alike love this annual walk- and it’s a wonderful way to learn more about Palm Spring’s historic past.” Many of the Inns served hot cider, hot chocolate and holidy treats and it’s really a fun community event.

Korakia Pensione

One of the highlights was the charming Naish House at the Korakia Pensione, once the home of silent film great J. Carrol Naish. Recent celebrity guests include Reese Witherspoon and Jake Gyllenhaal, as well as Cameron Diaz, Brad Pitt, Robert Downey Jr., Al Pacino and funnyman Will Ferrell. Nearby Rudolph Valentino shot scenes for his silent great “The Sheik”. The Korakia Pensione also hosted Winston Churchill who painted there, while at the Casa Cody Charles Chaplin, a frequent guest of opera singer Lawrence Tibbits, performed while proud parents Lucy and Desi heard the pitter patter of tiny feet when baby Desi took his first steps nearby in courtyard #4 at the beautiful Andalusian Court.

Naish House at the Korakia Pensione

With the activity and holiday lights of Village Fest twinkling outside the window of the popular Belgium French eatery Pomme Frite, I enjoyed my last evening and dinner in Palm Springs, a tasty three course prix fixe dinner of cesar salad, sole, mashed potatoes and fresh spinach with a light and creamy flan for dessert. I had such a great time on this trip! I experienced wonderful activities, great meals, beautiful lodgings and excellent service. My enjoyable visit was drawing to a close but I knew that someday soon I’d be back again to visit and enjoy. Palm Springs really is a Desert Oasis!

With it’s close proximity to Los Angeles, Palm Springs is often referred to as “the playground to the stars”, and has been the home away from home for many of Hollywood’s biggest celebrities, power couples and executives.

Star-studded Architecture

Elvis and Priscilla courted at the famous House of Tomorrow located at the end of Ladero Circle. The house was designed by father and son architects George Alexander and Robert Alexander. Their neighbor was Hollywood Gossip Columnist Rhona Barrett who recently received a star on the Palm Springs Walk of Fame. Honeymooners Clark Gable and Carole Lombard resided at 222 W. Chino Drive in stunning Las Palmas.

Cary Grant's former guest house.

President John F. Kennedy often stayed at the home of his sister Patricia and her husband Peter Lawford on Monte Vista Street and attended services at the Catholic Church in the center of town. The church was designed by architect A.C. Martin in the early 1930’s and is now considered a landmark. Frank Sinatra’s home at 1148 Alejo was designed in 1947 by E. Stewart Williams. The late Sonny Bono served as Mayor and was a great visionary of the hugely successful Palm Springs International Film Festival.

Indian Canyon Hiking

Our first activity after exploring the wonderful stars’ homes of Palm Springs, was a guided hiking tour of the beautiful Indian Canyons which is owned by the Agua Caliente tribe. Um Naw in Native American spirituality and folklore means ‘Great Spirit of the Land is everywhere and knows everything’. These words are very powerful and inspiring to me.

Our extremely knowlegable guide was Tribal Ranger Director Rocky Toyama who explained that the area was reopened to the public in 2000.

It took the tribe three years to return the area to its pristine state after years of vandalism and abuse by the public.

Junior Ranger Program

Over 4,000 students a year take part in their free junior ranger program and remains of ancient Cahuilla society like rock art, housepits, foundations, irrigation, ditches, reservoirs, trails and food preparation areas can be found in the area.

The Indian Canyons are considered the world’s largest California Fan Palm Oasis. Also known as Washingtonia filifera, these trees are actually part of the grass family, a monocot and are 80% water.

The hot mineral streams ensure the honey mesquite trees are green all year round.

Staying Hydrated

The tour of the canyon is as beautiful as I had heard and is a must see when you visit Palm Springs! When hiking, it is recommended that you drink one quart of water for every hour of walking and that when half your water is gone you should turn around and head back to avoid dehydration. Two books that Rocky recommends to learn more about the Indian culture are The Cahuilla Picture Book and Mukat’s People.

Aspen Mills Bakery Picnic

After our guided tour, we enjoyed a nice picnic lunch from Aspen Mills Bakery. Their gourmet turkey sandwiches on cranberry bread are fantastic!

Post Hiking Spa Treatment

At the Spa Resort Casino downtown, also owned by the tribe, we enjoyed a spa treatment known as the “Taking of the Waters” . Rocky explained that the famous mineral spring waters visible outside the hotel supply approximately 12 gallons a minute to the spa inside. The treatment includes steam, sauna and eucalyptus inhalation followed by relaxation in the Tranquility Room. What a perfect ending to the day!

LA’s The Place recently sent me to investigate the desert playground of Palm Springs and report for our readers. It encompasses so much as there are a multitude of enjoyable activities, wonderful lodging, excellent food and great service! First a little bit about the history of this desert oasis…

Beautiful desert sunset in Palm Springs.

Palm Springs was officially incorporated as a city in 1938 and has often been called The Playground of the Stars because of its close proximity to Hollywood. But the Agua Caliente Indians Cahuilla Tribe (pronounced Kaw-we-ah) first settled in the area 2,000 to 3,000 thousand years ago as they were attracted to the rich healing power of the natural spring waters.

They developed extensive and complex communities in Palm, Murray, Andreas, Tahquitz and Chino Canyons. Judge John Guthrie McCallum of San Francisco and his family were the first non-Indians to settle there in 1884.

Today Palm Springs hosts the most densely populated amount of beautiful Mid Century Modern Architecture in North America and being just over 100 miles away from Hollywood. It also has a rich History of Hollywood’s most glamorous Movie Stars, Film Executives and Moguls dating back to the Silent Film era. Far away enough for a rest or a tryst but close enough to get back to the studio when you were called!

It is said that Hollywood discovered Palm Springs as early as 1919. Silent screen greats like Rudolph Valentino, Theda Bara and Ernest Torrance were often seen in the area.

I was sent to explore Palm Springs on assignment for LA’s The Place Magazine. My first night was spent at the very classy Movie Colony Hotel where rock star Jim Morrison stayed in 1968 and I am told jumped from his 2nd story room into the pool below.

Movie Colony Hotel

For more on the Movie Colony Hotel visit www.moviecolonyhotel.com or call (760) 320-6340.

John Michael, the manager on duty was upbeat, friendly and very hospitable. The room was extremely comfortable with a soft beige 1950’s movie star décor and the huge enclosed private patio was very nice too.

The beautiful hotel was designed by architectural great Albert Frey whose popular work resonates throughout the Palm Springs area.

Dinner one street over at popular Copley’s was terrific. It is the former guesthouse of film legend Cary Grant and you could almost feel his warm classy spirit welcoming us.

Copley's Restaurant is Cary Grant's former guest house.

The gourmet food was delicious and the service was excellent! For an appetizer I enjoyed my perfectly prepared ahi tuna tacos followed by an entrée of juicy scallops and fresh spinach. The trio of assorted homemade ice cream was a very tasty dessert. A terrific place to have a wonderful first meal in Palm Springs.

Visit Copley’s online at www.copleyspalmsprings.com or call (760) 327-9555.

Breakfast the next morning was at a fun place called Pinnochio’s in the Desert. My egg white vegetable omelette was tasty and supersized accompanied by delicious homemade potatoes.

The European proprietors/hosts were very warm and friendly and there was plenty of champagne for those that enjoy a little bubbly (or a lot!) with their breakfast. Once again, very friendly service here too.

Find more information on Pinocchio’s in the Desert on their site www.pinocchiops.com or by calling (760) 322-3776.

Friends enjoying social hour in Palm Springs

When one thinks of Palm Springs many people envision golf courses, casinos and of course lots of people lounging by the pool drinking cocktails. But the city of Palm Springs also hosts many other unique things to do as well! Our first adventure after breakfast was the very enjoyable Palm Springs Aerial Tramway.

To plan your trip or learn more about the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway check them out online at http://www.pstramway.com or call (760) 325-1391.

Palm Springs Aerial Tramway in transit.

Envisioned by Francis F. Crocker, a young electrical engineer in the 1930’s the tramway was nicknamed “Crocker’s Folly” by the local press and finally opened September 14, 1963. It has been a top tourist attraction safely transporting 12 million passengers along the mountainside for the past 4 decades.

The new tramcars, completed in 2000 are valued at $480,000 each and are the largest trams in the world. The views going up the steady 10 minute climb along the mountainside are truly spectacular and the lodge is very large and homey.

Shopping on Palm Canyon Drive, Palm Springs.

Visitors can shop, have a snack, dine in the dining room, hike, go cross country skiing and also camp if they make arrangements. Palm Springs locals shared that they often escape the desert heat in the summer by taking the tram up to the mountains where the weather is a good 40 degrees cooler than below.

After our very enjoyable tram excursion we visited The Palm Springs Tourist Center where some of the nicest people in tourism work! The uniquely built structure, also designed by Albert Frey was originally designed as a gas station in the early 1960’s.

Ron Palmtag, the very knowledgeable Guest Services Manager for the Palm Springs Official Visitors Center and the Palm Springs Convention Center noted when you look at the exterior of the beige brick building it constantly changes, depending on how the sun hits it. In the distance you can see hundreds of beautiful windmills but locals shared it is known to sometimes get a little too windy in the area.

Downtown, lunch at trendy and chic Jakes Ready to Eat was very nice. Their 3 salad combo of curried chicken, egg salad and beet salad was very good. Then we relaxed across the street in a very nice sunny area known as “the corridor” where architectural expert Robert Imber warmly welcomed us before giving us his amazing Mid Modern Architecture Tour via his minivan.

Salad at Jakes Ready To Eat

Dinner that night at the recently opened Zin Café Med was exceptional to say the least and the service was great too! The eatery is owned and run by the lovely Mindy Reed who shared with us that the delicious recipes were the creations of her boyfriend and business partner, the late Chef Nicolas Klontz. When we commented how delicious everything was Mindy said, “They’re his Legacy.”

As taught by his mentor Nicolas Klontz, Chef Lupe Calvo does a wonderful job! Bravo on the thin crust vegetable pizza, the calimarri tapos, the linguini with clams and the delicious tiramisu dessert!

They say the best gift is something someone won’t buy for themselves. I believe this one qualifies! Southern California residents looking for the best way to entertain out-of-town guests need only look up in the sky for the answer. Airship Ventures Zeppelin Eureka, the only commercial passenger airship flying in the United States, will be offering luxury flightseeing tours of Southern California in the new year with new routes and more flights available when Eureka returns in January, 2010. Christmas gift idea anyone?

The exhillarating view from the Zeppelin Eureka.

Stretching 15-feet longer than a 747 and 50-feet longer than the largest blimp, Eureka is the world’s largest airship. One of only three Zeppelins currently operating in the world, Eureka offers passengers spectacular 360-degree views of the sights on flightseeing tours above Los Angeles, as well as San Francisco Bay, Silicon Valley and Monterrey.

Unforgettable Family Memories

“As much as the holidays are about togetherness, anyone who has ever hosted a holiday knows the moment of panic when the inevitable question, ‘what am I going to do with everyone?’ crosses their mind,” remarked Airship Ventures Co-Founder and CEO Alexandra Hall. “I’ve yet to meet a passenger who didn’t get off of our airship grinning from ear-to-ear. Gathering family and friends together to experience a one-of-a-kind aerial tour aboard Eureka is a great way to entertain guests and create unforgettable memories.”

Only Female Zeppelin Pilot

The Zeppelin Eureka Airship signature grin.

Flying Eureka into the peaceful skies safely is pilot Katharine Board. Kate holds several distinctions, including being a member of an elite group even more rare than female astronauts — female airship pilots. Kate however, holds an even more prestigious title – - the only female Zeppelin pilot in the world. From her first instruction flight at the age of 18, Kate has risen fast in the male-dominated world of airships. One of her first aviation positions, with Virgin Hot Air Balloon flights, led to her first airship position, with Virgin Lightships.

The Land of Enchantment, specifically the city of Santa Fe, illuminated Los Angeles with all its culture, beauty, art, and recreation last week at the Taste of Santa Fe. The Santa Fe Convention & Visitors Bureau and a coalition of city businesses brought the luxurious event, Taste of Santa Fe, to the recently remodeled Hotel Shangri-La in Santa Monica last Wednesday, October 28th. Los Angeles tastemakers sipped on fresh fruit margaritas poolside while enjoying art, music, theater, dance, and food to raise awareness about the city’s 400th Anniversary, to encourage more meetings to be held in the city, and to mark the beginning of direct air service between LAX and Santa Fe on American Eagle in mid-November.

Alluring Santa Fe

Juan Siddi Flamenco Theatre performed a stunning dance number filled with color and passion. Two-time Grammy Award Winning Native American Flutist Robert Mirabel gave a beautiful performance while guests experienced Santa Fe cooking demos, indigenous spa treatments, viewed world class art from local artists, pottery demonstrations and a film showcase . Representatives from Santa Fe’s most exquisite and luxurious boutiques and hotels were there showing southwestern fashions and services. Hundreds of the Los Angeles area press, meeting planners, tour operators, travel agents, and members of the film industry turned out for the sensational 5-hour, experiential open house event.

“Los Angeles is one of Santa Fe’s most important leisure travel markets in addition to being a national media market and film center,” said Santa Fe CVB Executive Director Keith Toler. “By providing hands-on Santa Fe experiences we think the LA media and the city’s travel and film professionals will come away with a better idea of what Santa Fe has to offer and, in turn, result in more visitors, meetings, and films coming to the city. This has been an excellent collaboration between public agencies and Santa Fe’s various business groups and is a model for working together in the future, especially our partnership with IATSE 480.”

In the heart of Palm Desert, with a spectacular mountain backdrop, is a year-round vacation oasis designed for both families and golfers alike: The beautiful, comfortable and upscale Marriott Shadow Ridge resort. The 312 acre lush Marriott Vacation Club property features elegant and well-appointed villas, beautiful pools, innovative water play areas, an eighteen-hole Nick Faldo-designed championship golf course, the Faldo Golf Institute, a water slide, tennis courts and childrens’ activities center….all within an easy drive from the Greater Los Angeles area. Welcome to Palm Desert. The perfect vacation awaits.

Beyond Expectations

Much more than a simple hotel room, Marriott Shadow Ridge distinguishes itself as a home away from home with its beautifully-decorated one and two bedroom vacation villas designed to meet every need. Rolling fairways, breathtaking mountains, and glittering pools are seen from many of the villas, all of which have comfortable balconies or terraces for complete relaxation. Marriott Vacation Club resort has left no stone unturned for those pursuing the ultimate in vacations.

Separate Living / Eating Areas

The villas accentuate their uniqueness with:

• Gorgeous, fully equipped kitchens with tile floors
• Separate living and dining areas
• Luxurious beds with mattress toppers, 300 count thread sheets and down comforters
• Multiple flat screen televisions with DVD players
• Wi-Fi internet access
• Washers/dryers
• Gas fireplaces
• Eye-catching décor throughout

From families seeking adventure, individuals looking to just relax or avid golfers wanting to try their hand at a Faldo-designed course, Marriott Shadow Ridge fulfills every need.

Family Fun

Families will find no lack of things to do at Marriott’s Shadow Ridge. The family-oriented pools excite kids with a fun water slide and water play area, complete with water-dumping buckets, animal-shaped squirt guns and a faux beach entry. Comfortable lounge chairs and cabanas beckon adults, and families can enjoy movies while floating in the pool. Water aerobics and a fully-equipped exercise room and sauna help fitness-minded individuals stay healthy, and there is an “adult” pool for complete relaxation and quiet.

The indoor activity room keeps kids and teens busy with an arcade, games, crafts and a mini movie theater, as well as an outdoor playground. There is no need to even leave the resort to eat. On property is Nick Faldo’s Bar and Grill, Chuckwalla Pool Grill, Snakebites Bar & Grill, The Marketplace Store and Deli, and Cielo’s Pizza delivery. The resort also sports barbeque grills for fun cookouts.

In close proximity to the resort are restaurants, fast food, big box retailers, and movie theaters, in addition to well-known family excursions such as the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway, Knott’s Soak City Water Park, Children’s Discovery Museum of the Desert, The Rapids Water Slide and the Palm Springs Air Museum. There is always something to do in the Palm Springs/Palm Desert area.

Golfing Extraordinaire

With 350 days of sunshine a year, the Nick Faldo designed championship golf course is ready whenever visitors are. The 18-hole course is beautifully maintained and showcases spectacular views of the Santa Rosa Mountains. Lakes and sand lots are interspersed with the greens, and the gorgeous clubhouse offers a pro shop. To improve your game, the Faldo Golf Institute serves up the latest in golf instruction.

Nick Faldo-Designed Golf Course

The New and The Innovative

The Marriott Shadow Ridge unveiled their latest design with their 73 two bedroom, two bath villas averaging a generous 1,320 square feet. The new additions are stylishly decorated with granite countertops, custom cabinetry, stainless steel appliances, as well as luxurious bedding, flat-panel TVs, DVD players, gas fireplaces, and private balconies.

The newest feature is a unique “lock off” function that allows the villas in essence to become two completely separate units (read more about the new lock offs in our interview with Marriott’s Ed Kinney, below). Each gorgeous unit has its own living area, bedroom, bathroom, balcony, and full kitchen or kitchenette, perfect for large families or those with teens.

Full Kitchen with Gorgeous Styling

Guests and owners hail the new villas as “contemporary” and “high end”. They describe the ambience as having an “uplifting” feeling. Elements of this new layout and design are also being implemented at three Florida-area Marriot Vacation Club resorts currently under development.

With the latest villa additions, this gem in the desert has 497 total units. Upon final build-out, the resort is proposed to have 984 luxurious villas.

Because everything is offered at the resort, it is a completely relaxing experience. Kids can swim while grownups relax, families can spend time together playing, parents golf while kids mingle in the activities area. The grounds are stunning with tall, proud palm trees flanking amazing mountains. Fresh air, clear blue skies and a near-perfect climate much of year make the Marriott Shadow Ridge in Palm Desert the absolute perfect getaway.

Ultra Luxurious Sleeping Area

Staying at Marriott’s Shadow Ridge

A mere 10 minute drive from Palm Springs International Airport, and only a two hour drive from Los Angeles, Marriott’s Shadow Ridge is one of 51 Marriott Vacation Club resorts worldwide. Marriott Vacation Club is celebrating 25 years of quality vacations and is the recognized leader in the timeshare industry. Vacationers can stay at the Marriott Shadow Ridge as part of their widely used vacation ownership program (www.marriott-vacations.com) or as nightly rentals (www.marriott.com).

The Birth of a New Concept
LATP Talks to Ed Kinney, vice president of corporate affairs and brand awareness for Marriott Vacation Club International, about their newly developed villas, how they arrived at the concept and what goes on behind the scenes.

LA’s the Place: How did the innovative concept of the new “lock off” come about?

Ed Kinney: The new villa design at Marriott’s Shadow Ridge was a combination of us being an industry leader and innovator while also getting feedback from our owner base. Research was conducted to gain insight into customer opinion and a model villa was built on-site to get owner’s feedback on the layout, flow, utility and use of space. Elements in the new villa design were viewed as upgrades and appealed to a broader range of customers; especially to families traveling with children.

The new deluxe lock-off concept features an open and flexible design with two completely separate living rooms, balconies and a kitchen and kitchenette, allowing guests to divide villas into two separate accommodations. Each spacious villa ranges from approximately 1,110 to 1,330 square feet and includes a fully equipped kitchen with granite countertops, stainless steel appliances and custom cabinets; generous living and dining areas; luxurious bedding; multiple flat-panel televisions with DVD players; private balcony; washer/dryer and Wi-Fi internet access. We expect to implement elements of this design at future Marriott Vacation Club resorts, worldwide.

LATP: How much of the new concept was design experts versus owner/guest input?

EK: The design of the new villas at Marriott’s Shadow Ridge was a balanced contribution of owner and guest input and the expertise of our designers. We anticipated how a few changes in the current villa design could maximize the space and flow and we then asked our owners for their input on several occasions and incorporated changes which resulted in the final new villa design.

LATP: The units are so complete in and of themselves, with every need anticipated. Is that something that has evolved along the way based on guest input, or were those little touches (like complete kitchen ware, dish soap, etc.) included in your plans from the beginning?

EK: The villa amenities at Marriott’s Shadow Ridge represent our brand standards across all of our Marriott Vacation Club resorts. With 25 years of delivering unforgettable vacations under our belt, we have a great understanding of what our guests need.

LATP: The Shadow Ridge property has amenities and recreational activities for every age (afternoon movies, games, arcade, water aerobics, crafts, in-pool entertainment). Is that something that’s exclusive to this particular property, or is this standard across all MVC properties?

EK: All of our Marriott Vacation Club resorts feature on-site activities for all ages. At each resort, scheduled activities are reflective of the destination and range from learning how to make a fresh-flower lei in Hawaii, to stargazing and learning the Salsa in Aruba.

LATP: How has the property been received by the “hotel guests” who are not used to such high-quality rooms and amenities?

EK: Our villas are not meant to be a comparison to a typical hotel room. Our resorts present a unique vacation environment that caters most to families going on vacation. Although we often offer more villa and resort amenities, that is balanced by less service-oriented amenities such as valet parking, comprehensive room service, etc.

The Foundation opened the Andre Agassi College Preparatory Academy in 2001; in 2009 the public charter school graduated its first senior class with 100 percent of graduates going on to higher education opportunities. The Andre Agassi Foundation’s work is directly impacting students in Las Vegas, but it has broader implications for education nationwide, as the Foundation works to increase investment in, and accountability for, public schools. Since 1995, the Grand Slam has raised nearly $75 million to support a movement that’s improving education for all children.

K1 Speed revs up the go kart experience for the kid or the kid at heart as the largest indoor go kart racing company on the West Coast. With 6 locations throughout Southern California and the Pacific Northwest, K1 Speed is the place to go for an ultra hip and eco-friendly go kart experience. Founded in 2003, K1 Speed has go kart locations in Los Angeles, San Diego, the Inland Empire and Seattle.

Modern Go Kart Venue

It’s not your grandfather’s go kart track as K1 Speed has created a fresh and electric interpretation of what a go kart racing venue should be. Highly advanced and green friendly electric karts are complemented by a vibrant entertainment environment, complete with pool tables, authentic racing memorabilia, pit cafes and meeting rooms for parties and corporate events.

Green Friendly Karts

K1 Speed has also reinvented the go kart itself with sporty yet environmentally friendly electric go karts. Gone is that familiar smell of gas fumes as you slide behind the wheel of a go kart. These electric alternatives to gas powered karts reduce the impact on the environment while actually offering superior performance with speeds approaching 45 mph.

Race green and clean with K1 Speed's electric go karts.

A 20hp DC electric motor produces far more torque than gas engines, allowing for superb acceleration out of tight corners. K1 Speed’s electric karts can be programmed to a wide range of pre-set speeds which means the vehicles can be adjusted to meet a variety of skill levels, from the novice participant to advanced drivers. Safety is also an advantage with the electric karts as they are programmed for automatic speed reduction when entering the pits and can be turned off remotely if needed.

K1 Speed Tracks

Part of the appeal with K1 Speed racing centers is their intricately designed tracks. Each location’s track is distinct from the others but all of the track layouts feature tantalizing turns and curves. K1 Speed tracks prefer quality over quantity with their straightaway stretches, offering unprecedented twists and turns while still giving you those chances to satisfy your need for speed. The spacious 1/3 mile tracks allow as many as 12 racers to compete at one time.

Race no matter the weather at K1 Speed's indoor track

Corporate Friendly

K1 Speed isn’t just a place for kids. With a functional setting that’s rich in amenities, these racing centers are perfect for corporate parties. K1 Speed venues have meeting rooms with wireless internet and 110 inch display screens for your presentation needs. They also have catering options and budget friendly race packages. From team building exercises to celebrations, they create a compelling atmosphere for corporate events. K1 Speed is even a popular destination for tradeshows and product launches.

Racing go karts... what a great idea for a corporate event!

New Torrance Location

This year K1 Speed opened their newest location in Torrance. The venue began operations in May and is their first in California to include the concrete surface that’s become so popular at their Seattle location. The etched concrete racing surface is ideal for drifting and offers slightly less grip compared to asphalt tracks. The difference makes for a more challenging experience as even expert drivers will have to work hard to achieve fast lap times. Located on South Vermont Avenue near LAX airport, K1 Speed’s Torrance location is easily accessible from the Carson, Long Beach and Los Angeles areas.

<img class="size-full wp-image-10687 " title="K1 Speed" src="http://lastheplace.com/images/article-images//2009/09/trackwithkart.jpg" alt="Southern California's largest go kart facilities...

K1 Speed's owner, Susan Graver

Great For All Ages

From birthday parties and Bar and Bat Mitzvah celebrations to corporate events, holding a commemorative event at K1 Speed can be fun for everyone. It’s also a great site to host adult birthday parties and even bachelor parties. However, you don’t have to be part of a group because K1 Speed also offers great prices for individuals, including competitively priced packages like their buy 2 get 1 free deal. True racing enthusiasts can compete in K1 Speed’s racing leagues while newcomers to kart racing can learn in their instructional classes.

K1 Speed is located in San Diego North, Irvine, Orange County, Anaheim, Orange County, Ontario, Torrance/LA, and Seattle.

Susan Graver is the creator of K1 Speed, who went to great lengths to open the first one in San Diego, then 5 more locations. Now, thousands have had much fun racing and playing at K1 Speed. Watch for our upcoming debut of LA’s The Place Daily TV, which we will feature an interview with Susan!

Just as you have to dress for the job you want, the car you drive says everything about the desire that drives you. Regardless of whether the statement is made to prospective clients or while sharing a milestone moment with a loved one, Midway Car Rental’s extensive assortment of standard, luxury and green vehicles empower people so that they may reach their destination in high comfort and style.

Ryan Kerzner, Sales Manager of Midway, says of the eco-friendly aspect of Midway, “It always has been a big part of our company, even when the first Prius came out years ago; we offered it first because people requested it from the beginning. We were able to get two Smart cars right off the bat when you couldn’t buy them on the retail market because of our long standing relationships with the dealerships.”

Midway’s Exponential Growth

As they approach their 40th year of business in 2010, Midway Car Rental now stands as the largest independently owned car rental company in Los Angeles. The car rental service is prolific in both locations (9 throughout Los Angeles) and gallery with over 1,700 vehicles.

The preferred provider for luxury vehicles, Midway is the exclusive rent-a-car company for virtually every four and five star hotel in Santa Monica, Beverly Hills, West LA and Los Angeles. Midway Car Rental also has rental concession for entertainment companies that value and specify luxury in their accommodations, including industry titans like AOL/Time Warner, Sony/BMG, Universal, NBC TV, CBS TV, Universal Music, HBO, Warner Brother Pictures, Sony Pictures, Paramount Studios, MTV and Comedy Central.

Midway Introduces Ferrari California

Midway Car Rental (www.midwaycarrental.com) has announced the introduction of the all new Ferrari California hardtop convertible to its gallery of luxury cars, a fitting addition for a company that’s already the Ferrari of the car rental industry. Reminiscent of earlier versions of the Ferrari California, the 250GT and the 365, the Ferrari California hardtop convertible embodies a true grand-touring car while boasting the automotive prowess that accompanies the ability to go from 0 to 60 mph in under 4 seconds.

2009 Ferrari California

Already trusted by hotels and the entertainment industry because of their service and vehicle gallery, the addition of the new Ferrari California only adds to Midway Car Rental’s impressive list of luxurious vehicles. The hardtop convertible is generating buzz with a long waiting list and is considered to be a rare Ferrari with elegant styling and premium price.

Thanks to Midway, Ferrari enthusiasts can forgo the long wait. Please inquire with the reservation center for pricing options and specials on the Ferrari California.

See Los Angeles in California Style

Ferrari California represents many firsts for the Italian automaker, with groundbreaking features like a hard-top convertible, front engine V8 with direct injection, 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox, and 2+2 passenger seating which can used to carry additional passengers or for storage.

The technology-heavy Ferrari California also takes a monumental step in amenities. The radio and hard-drive based navigation system are superior to anything else Ferrari has developed. The hard-top is a work of art as well, folding down in just under 15 seconds. A 460 horsepower front engine V8 matted to a rear-wheel platform catapults the car to 60 mph under 4 seconds.

Midway’s Mission

Established in 1970, independently-owned Midway Car Rental has 9 locations throughout the Los Angeles area with free airport shuttle service at LAX and pickup service from Burbank Airport. And as of October 2009 Midway Car Rental will have a location in San Diego that has free airport shuttle service.

Midway serves personal and professional needs as well as serving in-bound travel and tourism clients. The company prides itself in providing first-class car rental service to a majority of the hotels, major production studios, travel agencies, and corporate companies doing business in Los Angeles. Ryan explains why they are the go-to rental company for the high-end hotels, “They choose us because we give the same 5 star service without conflict they give their guests. The vendors are an extension of the hotel.”

Midway Car Rental also specializes in providing upscale professional service while delivering premium cars to hotels, homes and businesses. Service is fundamental to Midway’s business philosophy as the company offers personalized Town Car meet and greet services at local airports as well as meeting specific vehicle make and model requests from clients.

Yelpers love Midway

But don’t take our word for it… the interactivity of the web has given power back to the people. Sites such as Yelp.com allow the voices of the masses to be heard. It doesn’t get anymore truthful than unbiased reviews from the public’s experience. You can read for yourself why Midway has a 4 ½ star rating on Yelp. http://www.yelp.com/biz/midway-car-rental-los-angeles-6
