LA’s The Place: Who is the typical person who would benefit by having dental implants?

Dr. Blake LaBounty: Anyone who has a denture, like a removable denture, is a really good candidate for a dental implant.

LATP: What are the benefits to having dental implants?

If you’re chewing on a denture you are chewing on the soft tissue on your gums, which compress. Not only is it rather uncomfortable, but the gums compress, to the extent where you can generally only exert about 5 lbs per sq inch of force chewing, which is very little.

When you have a dental implant that you can place, it will suddenly give you up to 100 lbs per sq inch of force. So your ability to chew your food is massively increased.

There are obvious health issues associated with digestion, etc., with your ability to properly chew your food.

Dr. LB: You could have somebody who has complete dentures that are sliding all around and you know they are horribly uncomfortable, and you just place a couple implants that dentures suddenly click into the implant and its stable and functions much better and it’s massively life changing and not that expensive for that sort of purpose.

LATP: Who else might need dental implants?

Dr. LB: Anyone who’s missing a tooth generally is a good candidate for an implant. It’s very rare I ever do a bridge anymore; just because of the forces they place on the teeth on either side. Generally, most of the time you want to place an implant.

If you’re going to lose a tooth, this is an amazing service. This used to take me five months to do, at least, but now in one appointment, say, somebody has a fractured tooth or a failing root canal and the tooth has to be extracted, what I can do in one appointment is, the patient comes in, we extract the tooth and immediately place an implant and then put the crown on the implant right then and there and send the patient home.

Let me tell you, it is so much less uncomfortable and painful to have this procedure done than it is just to have an extraction. If you have a tooth extracted and leave, it leaves that open socket … that hurts.

Patients, across the map, report, “I’m amazed, I took one Advil last night and that’s it! I had no pain, zero, I feel perfect today and it’s wonderful.”

LATP: How long does the procedure take?

Dr. LB: It takes me about an hour to do that, when it used to take me five months because of the techniques used with the implants in the past. The type of coatings on the implants now and the actual design of the implant itself enables me to place them and immediately load them. Previously, what we would do was have to wait for the implants to integrate, which is where the bone grows up and attaches onto the implant. Which takes a number of months; it takes more for the upper jaw than the lower.

The majority of dentists planting implants are still doing them that way. So the fact that we can give you teeth in a day, sort of thing, is the goal.

LATP: What materials do you use for these implants and why?

Dr. LB: There are two different materials we use: titanium and zirconia. Anything that’s in an aesthetic area, like a front tooth or any interior tooth, we want to use zirconia because it has the property of being translucent.

Zirconia (Lithium disilicate) comes in different shades of white and different opacities. The more translucent we can make the restoration, the more lifelike it looks. If you have a very opaque restoration on your front tooth, like porcelain infused to metal crown where there’s a metal coping, or even a titanium implant boost, that restoration will never look as life like as one that’s fully translucent. Then I can get beautiful aesthetics. Zirconia gives predictably beautiful aesthetics. For a back tooth I might use titanium.

LATP: What is the most memorable experience you’ve had as a dentist?

Dr. LB: I had this patient, who I think was on Omaha Beach in WWII and he was near a mine that went off or some sort of explosion that blew off half of his lower jaw and half of his face. At the age of 18 he lost all of his teeth. The surgeons of his day did an amazing thing. They took a rib bone and grafted it in where half of his jaw was a rib bone. So he was kind of deformed a little bit because of this process. Dentists could never fit him for dentures because of the shape of his jaws. What I managed to do for this gentleman was give him implants, upper and lower, and gave him a full set of teeth and at the age of almost 80 years old I did this. And the first time since he was 18 he could chew again. When I delivered those teeth and he looked in the mirror he started to cry. It was unbelievable. The greatest day of my career that was. And he went and ate a steak afterwards.

LATP: What do you want SmileWorks Dentistry to be known for?

Dr. LB: Single tooth restoration aside, one of the most significant things we can do is with denture wear. These people just act like they are fine with their dentures, but in reality, 90% of them are absolutely miserable and dentures are just a horrible thing to wear.

If you’re going to the store and purchasing products that are denture adhesives and stick your denture to your gum ­­­­­ –  then you need dental implants.  Long term, it’s just a quality of life thing. Do you want to go through your life being uncomfortable, not chewing your food and enjoying your food? Or do you want to be comfortable? We can take a patient that has no teeth and give them a full set of teeth just with dental implants that are fixed and in place and can’t be removed.

You want to get them to a place where they have a full set of teeth fixed in their mouth that you don’t have to take out ever night. There’s generally a transition phase during that treatment where we do use dentures but they’re attached by the implant so you can take them in and out for a period of time, make sure we get the patient used to having teeth and the size, dimensions and shape we are proposing. When they are comfortable we can switch them into full-fixed restorations. So you don’t have to take them out anymore they look just like natural teeth to anyone who’s looking at you while you’re talking.

No falling out while you’re having a conversation with somebody, which happens. In one appointment I can do that. I can place two implants put the little inserts into your existing denture and clip your denture into it, you don’t even need new dentures… just in an hour.

LATP: What should someone expect to pay?

Dr. LB: Implants are generally costing the consumer about $5,500 each because of the amount of chair time it takes. I can do it with infinitely less chair time so I can bring my prices down significantly. So I’m a couple thousand dollars less than that because I can do them quickly and efficiently.

Built on dreams rather than profit margins, co-founders Grant and Kelsey Gottfurcht have reinvented what a studio ought to be, from operating solely on a donation basis to offering addiction recovery classes. Grant and Kelsey recruited their favorite teacher and mentor Tamal Dodge to join YogaCo as their partner and head teacher. Their collaboration is driven by a desire for an environmentally conscious, physically empowering and emotionally enlightening institution.

The Studio

When YogaCo founders Kelsey and Grant searched for a place to build their vision, they discovered a neglected 7,000 square foot interior amid the action on the 3rd Street Promenade. Leave it to two yoga enthusiasts to see the hidden potential beneath the surface of a place that had been dormant for 25 years. Kelsey and Grant rolled up their sleeves and went to work on stretching the space as though it were the body of a Yoga master, carving out three lounges, a Teachers’ Lounge, two Yoga rooms, stores and bathrooms. A third Yoga room is in development. The studio also features a stunning lobby and relaxing courtyard.

The interplay of bold neutrals against the backdrop of pristine, white walls is revealed by low lighting that illuminates without intruding. Bamboo palm plants are placed throughout the studio to complement the ambience and the environmentally friendly bamboo is used in constructing many of the studio’s elements, including the flooring, shoe cubbies and benches. A deliberate use of elegant artwork and portraits adorn the walls. Select walls within the studio also showcase grand and classic lettering that express messages like “Breathe” and “Namaste”.

The Environment

YogaCo transcends the atmosphere of other yoga locations by promoting a wholly Green environment in their studio. The aforementioned bamboo is a renewable resource. For water conservation, YogaCo conserves up to 40,000 gallons of water a year via waterless urinals and low-flow toilets. Quadruple-paned windows work to mitigate the loss of heat and air for maximum energy efficiency. Hepa-filters are used in the studio and filter 100% of existing air 2 to 5 times per hour while oxygen-producing plants removed harmful elements like Benzene, Formaldehyde and TCE.

 The champion plants in removing benzene used in the studio are: ivy, gerbera daisies, pot mums, peace lily, bamboo palm, and Mother-in-law’s Tongue. Chinese Evergreens and pot mums extract benzene coming from detergents, while Dracaena extracts it from ink, dyes, tobacco smoke and rubber. Ivy extracted easily the toxins coming from petroleum products, while benzene from plastics was rapidly sucked up by Gerbera daisy.

While this allows YogaCo’s visitors to feel good about practicing in an environmentally responsible studio, these green enhancements also elevate the quality of the workouts themselves. For example, the filtering out of Formaldehyde cleanses the air breathed by all as the chemical is an irritant of the eyes, nose, and throat. Formaldehyde causes dermatitis and headaches, is a common cause of asthma and has been connected to throat cancer.

The Cost

YogaCo does not charge a standard rate for classes. They don’t believe that people should be deprived the opportunity to practice because of an arbitrary cost, particularly in light of the strain many are experiencing in today’s economic climate. The Founders
