Life-Altering Vision

Psychic Medium Cheri Mancuso.

Born on an Indian reservation and growing up in the 1950’s, Cheri was like any other girl in Salmanca, NY until one summer she had her first vision of a past life experience, something that would alter her life forever. Chopper Donated To be Auctioned Off

They chose a special camouflage-inspired design for the chopper, including a matching helmet and embroidered Iraq Star logo on the seat. Before it is auctioned off the night of the event, the presented helmet will be signed by the VIPs and the Iraq Star soldiers. Although Dr. Phil has already claimed the chopper is worth $100,000, Iraq Star hopes to receive a minimum of $150,000 on the evening of October 4th.

The honoree of the evening for A Night For Honour will be actor Gary Sinise. The legendary actor currently stars on CSI: NY and is known for performances in films like The Green Mile, Apollo 13 and Forrest Gump.

Q: One of your specialties is assisting women who are transitioning into the Human Resources field. What kind of challenges do professional women face in confronting the ever changing world of Human Resources?

There are many challenges especially facing professional women transitioning into the Human Resources field. What I oftentimes find is that a woman does not have either the “right” connections, are not proactive about networking and utilizing the social networking options now available to all of us and are not as prone to “self-promote” which at times appears as a lack of confidence factor. You need to ask for informational interviews while approaching a new field, market or industry and go out to lunch with one new person at least a week or if not that, a month, in order to grow your network and ask friends, associates, and those that know and care about you to introduce you to others. You are on a campaign to find that niche or role in life that you “love” so, be passionate and bold, and dare to go where you have not yet gone. If you are unclear about how to do this, I can help since, I’ve “been there and done that” during a time when Mentorship roles were far and few between. I suggest, take someone out to lunch, ask good questions, don’t ask for favors or a job, but show a genuine interest in the person that has something to offer to you—information! Once a person gets to know you on a personal level where you have no agenda, chances are, something that you said or your passion will shines through and people are always looking for new talent and filling a pipeline of people they trust. Trust is HUGE in Business; so, build lasting, trusting relationships. There is no magic bullet, yet, I also recommend that you be a “lifelong learner” and take control of your learning and reading and associating in groups with people that are in the field you want to break into. Once you do this, when you do eventually interview for that position that you are trying to break into with transferable skills, having the vernacular down pat and being able to mention the “movers and shakers” in the business has a lot of pluses with Recruiters and decision makers. Create a portfolio of your successes a brag book—and brag! Volunteer, do things for others that you normally wouldn’t think to do on your own and in return, the law of attraction has a way of bringing opportunities your way through your energetic connections and interests. What inspired you to create Empowering Inquiry by Renee and mentor professional women?

I am inspired to mentor professional women as a direct result to my own experience starting out on Wall Street in the 80’s when, there were no formal roles in which the craven, unguided, passionate, yet confused, intelligent, yet uninformed about political ideas in which to grow partner and gain access to the inside track was available. Be that as it may, I was blessed to have the internal inertia, drive and motivation that allowed me to listen to those that were informed and connected, ask questions, inquire about informational meetings and networks, such as the National Association of Female Executives which was around back then, and also, work hard at learning Whatever I could about things that meant something to growing my career in the area that I believed was where I was meant to land. It worked, although, it took a lot of time, personal research and apparently, there were not short cuts to my success based on the trial and error of creating my own relationships and personally, not having the know-how to walk-the-talk without having a personal mentor and/or coach.

Empowering Inquiry was born on the concept that, Women need other Professional Women to lead direct and leverage talent. Back in the day, we women were afraid of other powerful women since; the reputation was “deadly.” These women could make or break you and more often than not, the latter based on perhaps how difficult it was for them to gain access to the C-Suite and climb the ladder that really doesn’t exist today and break that proverbial glass ceiling. I am not about competition with others; I am about competing with you! With competing with yourself, you always win—even if you have some trials that make you feel you have lost. Q: You’ve lived a rich life in both academic and professional experiences in New York. Do you often draw from these experiences when working as a HR Consultant in NYC and a Career Development Coach in NYC with your clients?

I absolutely draw upon my rich experiences from the NYC Market while working with my local clients and otherwise national accounts. As Frank Sinatra astutely sang, “If I can make it there, I can make it anywhere, it’s up to you New York, New York,” that resonates within my core being. I look at NYC as my playground, the place where I gained my stripes and accumulated knowledge that was both in the form of an erudite learner and as a streetwise, astute, intuitive type that adeptly assesses situations and people and gains that emotional intelligence in which to respond agilely to things going on around oneself. That in and of itself is a gift—one that through a mentorship and or coaching relationship for someone coming to NY from another location, can highly benefit from the “shortcuts” or “mental heuristics” that is needed to thrive and not only survive. I have a plethora of cultural, educational, networking, resources and association connections that can highly benefit my clients. What I make clear to them up front upon the time when we are “inking the contract” and have both decided to work with each other due to the purity of the intent on both sides to do this work—it is a journey, an open, fluid process, a facilitation of ideas and questions, and you get what you put into it as a client. I also ensure that the client wants advice and counsel, and not purely coaching being that coaching is an internal guiding through questioning to the client by the coach where the answers are drawn out and powerful revelations are made by the coachee. With Consulting, there is a portion of the dialogue between the coaching dyad where, the Coach asks permission to give advice and based upon past practices that have been successful or information that is known by the Coach that can truly benefit the Coachee, an exchange of a directional response is given with information sharing for enhanced growth.

Q: Your website (www.empoweringinquiry.com) notes that you’re qualified to administer a wide range of assessment tests. How much do you conform or personalize your coaching to meet each client’s unique needs?

I always personalize my coaching services to uniquely suit my client’s needs. I am ethically bound by certifying bodies, such as the International Coach Federation as a Coach and the American Counseling Association as a Counselor, along with the APA – American Psychological Association where, I do what I do with the right intent and not for financial gain solely as a purpose to prolong a process that is not beneficial to the client. What makes me different is that, I want to get my clients going, on board with what they truly want out of life and back in the saddle. I know that I do not have a magic wand or crystal ball; so therefore, I do customize a process that is manifested through the 30 minute free intake consultation that is mutually arranged according to our schedules in which the client always calls the coach for the appointment. Furthermore, I belong to the National Society of Career Managers and the Association of Psychological Type International in which, they both speak to my vocational training in my niche as a Career Manager that utilizes assessment tools with precision as a diagnostic tool in which to assist us in realizations, identification, understanding and is not a prescription for success or a diagnosis of a deficiency—it is just the opposite. Which ever assessment tool or tools are selected to benefit the client, are random sampling response data that has been correlated and validated in which to determine how the client answered questions against this normative data. I know it sounds so complicated and scientific, although, the good thing is, it is only a sampling of personality or personal attributes! When one becomes concerned with a “test” and feels at awe about being “discovered” or “uncovered” or feeling “naked” it is SO not that. It is about the client gaining awareness and through that awareness, building upon that in which to create a fertile mind in which to draw connections that can build the bridge from the unknown to knowing!

Q: How long does a typical relationship with a client last?

A typical relationship with a Career Development Coach lasts 3 – 6 months, depending upon needs and level of security in making a successful and lasting transition that will prevent derailment at all cost. Package pricing is available on a monthly basis for those that are planning to stay the course to do the necessary work, research, self-exploration to find lasting satisfaction and overall career bliss. Job Security is an anachronism and is no longer something that most companies today can guarantee or offer. You therefore need to be a Career Fitness Professional – flexing your muscles, your brain, thinking ahead on trends, reading journals, staying current in professional organizations, and not remaining complacent in a role you hold today, for, tomorrow it may not be a field that is “hot” or may downsize employees or outsource them internationally for cost savings. I take a full intake with each candidate and in doing that, I make only suggestions as to what I feel will benefit the individual. The client has the choice, although, minimally 3 months with a person transitioning or trying to leverage their transferable skills into a new field will require that amount of time in order to affect change.

Q: You are accredited in a wide range of skills like resume writing and public speaking and have an extensive list of degrees and certifications from career development associations. Why do you feel it is important to continually grow in your role as a Career Development Coach?

It is imperative to continually grow as a Career Management Coach and Branding Strategist with a background (as I have) in Human Resources. Everything changes, and nothing is static, and as you can imagine, information becomes outdated and no longer pertinent in the role of action planning and guidance with clients. Once a Coach becomes ineffective, it is transparent and easily detectable as, there are others out there doing what I am doing, and that is gaining momentum within their niche in which to service their clients exceptionally well and differentiate them to stand out amongst the other contenders in the game of life! I describe myself as a curious mind, one that draws connections constantly, intuits information and is able to integrate meaning at a laser fast speed. This is my personal talent and ability, and something that helps me with my clients. The information that I gain in my certifications, training, and continuing education is the “food” that “fuels” my mind power to create these connections and ideas that transform the dynamics of the relationship between the Coachee and me. I am a self-described life-long learner and as a life long learner, I am motivated by success, being the best that I possibly can, and sharing information with others that are lacking whatever they bring to me as their area of concern or question so that together, we can synergize our energies and shift the situation in a way that cannot happen alone!

Q: What areas of New York are you available for consultation in and does your coaching occur in person, on the phone or online?

I am a career development coach and HR consultant in Brooklyn, Bronx, Staten Island, Queens, and Manhattan. My Coaching occurs both – either on the phone for those that are my national and local clients that just don’t have the time to arrange an in-person meeting and in-person (which is priced at a premium rate based on arranging travel time in which to meet and securing space—if necessary). This can all be determined at the initial 30 minute free consultation since, sometimes, a client may request an initial in person meeting to get a sense of my style or our ability to work well together—which is understandable. Then, they realize, “boy, meeting virtually by phone is even better, since, there are absolutely no distractions, and the client is taking in the process via one sense—hearing—versus multi-sensory experience in person that can sometimes make one feels unveiled and self-conscious. My clients absolutely ADORE the ability to talk to me at a scheduled time so that they have this time that is just theirs for extreme self-care by an objective person who is truly listening to just them in which to get them back on track or to give them valuable advice that they are missing. How cool is that? Lastly, if a person is in the NYC area and has an office at their workplace, I can meet them there (if after the initial 30 minute free consultation that becomes the Premium Coaching rate) and can be accommodated by scheduling this up front and over time. If the person does not have space that is private at work, then, there are other alternatives in which I have an office space that is flexible based on where they are located. Again, this is something that can be determined once we agree to work together and how we will be working together, i.e., either by telephone or in person. Corporate clients that are out-of-state looking to work with me onsite at their business can also hire me, and this would require a separate contract in which we will need to arrange airfare and hotel accommodations and any incidentals, as part of the expense to utilize my coaching, facilitative and consulting services.

For many of us, complaining about sanitation means tiptoeing around a gas station bathroom on a long road trip or waiting on a plumber to fix a busted pipe. Yet for a large portion of the world, poor sanitation often means disease and even death.

Shocking Statistics

Every 17 seconds, a child under the age of five dies from intestinal and diarrheal illnesses, which are caused by poor sanitation and insufficient clean water resources. The result is a daily death toll of approximately 5,000 children; more than those with HIV/AIDS, malaria and measles combined. In total, the World Health Organization (WHO) reports an estimated 2.5 billion people do not have access to satisfactory toilet facilities, resulting in the spread of multiple diseases for both children and adults.

Wherever the Need

Founded in 1997, Whatever the Need (WTN) addresses lacking sanitation infrastructure by collaborating with developing countries such as India, Kenya, Uganda and Sierra Leone to provide sanitation and water through specialized “eco-san” toilets. Whatever the Need also facilitates the conversion of human waste for local agriculture usage. As an entrepreneur and someone whom others have always turned to for help, he could no longer play that role.   His way of retreating was a reason and a reaction at the same time. If he kept to himself, he didn’t have to be honest with others about his situation and this way, he could deal with it on his own. The catch was he knew he needed help with asking for help.

It was interesting to me how methodical and organized he was in terms of his priorities, who and what was important to him; in addition to what he knew he needed to do. He would talk in circles of which I realized I needed to catch him on the way to his next go around. What I pointed out to him was that he also was looking too far in advance and was letting our creation of time overwhelm him.

This reminded me of another client, a woman in her late thirties who was going through a major transitional time and personal reinvention herself. She too could see out in to the future and knew what felt best to do in looking ahead, but was stumped by her far reaching future that seemed like it would be here tomorrow.  I remember hearing her say, “How could I, the person who is usually the pillar of strength for everyone else, be going through all of this?!”

She painted the picture for me of the most stressful six months she recently went through. In the past and was used to easily picking herself up and hopping over the river to the next opportunity that came her way within a few months of losing a job, but this time was different. This time it had been much longer and the government help was running out.

She finally got an offer, which felt like just in time, and within a few days of accepting it, the company rescinded it. After being told very simply that Management decided to go in a different direction, she angrily hung up the phone and felt the world crushing down on her. She fell to her knees, had a good cry and picked herself up to take a shower that felt more like a bad energy cleanse.

After calming herself she realized what she had to do. She humbly called those close to her and did something she had a really difficult time doing.  Done in a manner similar to being ashamed, she asked for help. What she didn’t realize then was that she was setting herself up for something really great.  It was during this time that she scaled back her belongings, found a storage unit, packed her stuff up in boxes and moved in with family.

“So what is it about family dynamics sometimes?”  This was a question a friend of mine posed to me, as we were uncovering why she felt she had to handle everything on her own.  She had learned that we all hit plateaus in our lives; whether it’s with personal experiences or business, and that it’s at those times when it’s best to reach out for a hand.

She was struggling with her ability to do that, and knew it had to do with how things were handled when she was growing up.  It was typical in her family that whenever someone was going through something drastic, you don’t talk about it until it becomes a crisis. It was just understood, with a never discussed agreement, that it’s best not to worry anyone else.

When you did talk about it, there was an overreaction from all family members and now everyone was trying to solve it. With everyone’s reactions masked as assistance, it was more overwhelming than to try and be the sole survivor. She wanted to have a breakthrough in this area and was trying to get clear about what was underneath all of this.

It’s been said that when you try something new and try to get better at it, you will arrive at the plateau where most people throw in the towel and give up.  It’s those who choose to master this new task or way of being that they ask for help. Help can come in many forms and one way is to hire a coach.

A coach will assist you to discover what crawls underneath and surfaces itself just enough to cause ripples, road bumps or potholes in your journey. Is it that you are afraid of being rejected, or that maybe you aren’t perfect after all?  Maybe it’s the fear that others might find out that you really don’t have all the answers or that you have a limiting belief about not having anything to offer them?

You know on an intellectual level that these types of thoughts just aren’t true.  You also may be aware that making the assumption that things will always be how they’ve been in the past is not always the case either.  On a deep level you may also know that there was some sort of earlier event in your life as to how these things got created.

What kind of thoughts do you really want to be having? If you were to truly believe in yourself how much would that free you up? By asking for help from others, what are you open to receiving? In surrendering to where you’re at and being at peace with it, it’s amazing how a trapdoor can magically open with help showing up without having to ask for it at all.

Like my friend who realized that by being open to having others lend a hand, it doesn’t mean she’s not enough to begin with.  She also got that just because those in her family deal with things this way doesn’t mean she has to, anymore.  Her new belief is that she as a person is more than enough, that she has all the resources she needs, and the sooner you ask for help when circumstances begin, the more energy she has to overcome it!

The first few times she did, it was a little strange but soon it became not just easier but fun!   Whenever she is now around her family, she is also aware of those buttons our loved ones seem to find so easily and push just enough to get a reaction. Her new response:  Step 1) listen without reacting, Step 2) be inquiry to find out why they were saying what they did, Result =  the button gets left alone.

Not unlike the aloneness that my late thirties client felt in going through this major transition time.  She shifted her intention so that she no longer had to go it alone. As soon as she surrendered to where she was at, it was interesting what showed up. Not only did the help come, it also came in the form of things or services she needed. Sometimes they were things that she never even expressed out loud.

The timeliness also surprised her. Things were moving so fast that she didn’t have much time to get uncomfortable with their arrival or think about why they came.  It was weeks later that she also noticed that she felt more relaxed and that she didn’t have to make as much effort to make things happen. They just did.

Like the speed of time that was overwhelming Noah. In reaching too far ahead, he couldn’t see what was right in front of him.  As if to engage in a game where he could either stop time or slow it down, he now understood the power of choice in every moment.

By choosing to take each 24 hours, one day at a time, he was only in the here and now. It was then easier to map out what he needed to do and actually do it, by leaving the uncertainty about his potential future to the future. He then proceeded with the simple task of making a few phone calls, something that didn’t seem so simple just a few weeks before.  By taking that easy to chew on, bite size piece, he heard a voice on the other line say, yes, I’ll help you. As he took a deep breath after hearing those words, he could dial the keys on his phone once again, only to spell out the word “possibility.”

On Nested Loopo Metaphors

As an NLP Master Practitioner and Hypnotherapist, one of my favorite tools to utilize with a client is a metaphor. Up to this point, I know you have heard metaphors in a few different forms to include an analogy, a story, as well as the ever engaging joke.  No matter their length or intention, we all use them in our every day conversations.

In listening to a metaphor, it’s simply the form of the story that has a lasting impact, not necessarily the details. It is a story within a story, and is designed to elicit emotional responses and is most often shared verbally.  Metaphors stimulate the right side of the brain, capturing the attention of the unconscious mind, allowing the listener to get lost in their own creative imagination. In the realm of NLP and Hypnosis, most often the subject of a metaphor is to cater to what a client has revealed they would like to work on, or is intuitively picked up on by the Practitioner.

As a nested loop metaphor, by “nesting” them together, this type of metaphor overpowers the ability of the conscious mind to track what is being talked about, creating an altered state or slight hypnotic trance. The feedback most often heard is that it’s soothing to read and listen to. Without hearing Alanna’s pitch or tone, semantics will play its part in your interpretation of the words and the overall message.

As we are all unique in our experiences and what is true for us at this time, they can spark recalled memories or create new inspiring thoughts. Whatever comes up for you may also speak to your values in terms of honoring them or how you are currently in discord with them.  I invite you to read ahead, allowing your unconscious mind to naturally find the value it will create for you.

Nino Schembri

Alan Cohen - New York City Business Coach

LATP: As a business coach in New York City, how do you see the current economic environment play into the fast growing coaching world?

Alan Cohen: As a business coach in New York City, now more than ever there is a need for coaching – the world is suffering from a real Identity Crisis, with people defining themselves by what they do – then losing their jobs and feeling that they have no identify. We are not our jobs. Our jobs ideally are one way of expressing our purpose. My business is strong right now, with lots of professionals seeking coaching to help them get energized, focused and motivated, and to create opportunities for themselves. Many are even determining that they want to start their own businesses, and desire support to help them organize and brand. I want my clients to be a cause of the turnaround, not an effect of the crisis. This is a great time for the coaching industry.

LATP: Are most of the business clients you have located in New York City?

AC: At this time, yes, but at other times, my clients have been from all over the country. I am a business coach in New York City, business coach in the Bronx, business coach in Brooklyn, business coach in Staten Island, business coach in Queens, business coach in Manhattan and a business coach in Ulster County but offer my coaching services to the entire country.

LATP: Are you able to do the standard phone coaching with people in business or do you have to meet face-to-face?

AC: I am very flexible, and can do either in person or by phone. As a business coach in New York City, I find myself being a business coach in Manhattan, a business coach in the Bronx, a business coach in Brooklyn, a business coach in Staten Island, a business coach in Queens and a business coach in Ulster County without leaving my office.

LATP: What are some of your success stories as a business coach in NYC?

AC: As a business coach in New York City, I have helped professionals transition from one career to a completely different career, have helped high level executives get clearer about what they want from their current job, and helped them with a strategy to negotiate for a position that better meets their needs, have helped entrepreneurs get more organized and focused, and have helped public relations and marketing professionals (my niche) with time management, and helping them see the big picture. All of my clients have benefited from the motivation that coaching brings. I work a lot of individuals to help hem bring out their own unique personalities, and develop their communications skills. Some of this comes from my theater background.

LATP: Since you have a background in public relations and marketing, how do your coaching skills complement these and do you strictly coach or do you also consult for businesses?

AC: I do mainly coaching, but occasionally do public relations consulting. Many of my clients want help to maximize their communications skills, so my public relations background comes in handy here. For those clients wanting help with interviewing, my media training background comes into play. LATP: Since many organizations have sales teams, would you coach the entire team as one or would you coach one-on-one with the individual employee?

Many have blocks, limiting beliefs and assumptions that impede them from going after their dreams. I help remove the blocks and set them into positive action. Most everyone can benefit from coaching. I do prefer the kinds of clients who are willing and open to thinking out of the box about what is possible, and are motivated to do the work. I have a compassionate, but action-oriented, no nonsense approach. I like clients who like to have fun, along with doing the work. Balance in life is the key.

LATP:  What was the inspiration for your motto “Helping good people on the way to doing great things?”

Angelina Iyamah-Wilson: It actually came from an experience with one of my clients.    I have had the fortune of meeting and working with some truly exceptional people, some of them knew at the time we met that they are exceptional while others were on a path to that realization.  During a session one of my clients told me that our time together set him up to do great things at work.  I responded by saying that I had good material to work with.  That conversation became the concept for my motto.

LATP:  In your experience as a Human Resource Professional and now a Career Transition Coach, what types of programs should be implemented to benefit employees of a Corporation?

Angelina Iyamah-Wilson: I do my best not to Should on anyone…but I can say that in my experience organizations that invest in the career development of their people have a better return on investment than those that don’t.   Some of the programs that have excited me have been leadership training programs, tuition reimbursement programs and succession planning programs.

LATP:  How has your Myers-Briggs qualifications been useful in the internal mobility and recruiting at the companies you have worked for?

Angelina Iyamah-Wilson:  Being certified to deliver MBTI results has been useful in helping clients understand their personality make-up and how to use that knowledge to support their career choices and development.  It has also given me a clearer understanding of my learning style and that has been very beneficial in making career related education choices.

LATP:  You told me about how you applied for your very first job, which typically would be an entry level position, but it was for a more sophisticated position.  Although you didn’t get the job you applied for, you were referred to another one. Tell us more about that experience and what others can learn from having confidence in their ability.

Angelina Iyamah-Wilson:  My first job was in property management.  I applied for a position as a property manager for a building portfolio of 180 apartments.  I created a resume that attracted the attention of the hiring manager and was called for an interview.  During the interview it became clear that I really wasn’t qualified for the role.  Luckily they liked me and to my surprise, I was offered the opportunity to interview for a lower level role at a larger property.  I ended up landing a job as a leasing consultant for a building portfolio of 358 apartments!  I think the best way to sum it up is to by using an old quote: If you shoot for the stars, you might reach the moon.

LATP:  You also mentioned your love of travel and how it’s not just about getting to your destination; you truly enjoy the process of getting there. How can your clients use this same approach in not just getting the job, but enjoying the process of the job hunt? 

Angelina Iyamah-Wilson:  Let’s face it.  Looking for a job after being laid off makes the Top Ten list of stressful life events.  Lay offs are painful.  Most companies don’t give any form of notice and severance packages are quickly becoming a thing of the past.  So it is completely understandable that the focus for anyone in that situation is finding a job as quickly as possible.  In working with my clients however, we spend an immense amount of time focusing on the things within their immediate control. This includes creating their story and all the moments that went into making the amazing person they are today.   

LATP: Why do you think so many people blame themselves for losing a job?

Angelina Iyamah-Wilson: When you lose a job, it is a lot like a break up or a divorce.  For many people, a job is more than just a salary; it is how they identify themselves.  When you ask someone what they do for a living, the average person will respond by saying, I AM…  I am an administrative assistant, or I am a marketing manager.  So it is only natural that when you are told unexpectedly that your job is no longer available to you that you would seek to find clarity and understanding.  Part of that process for many people involves identifying who is to blame. 

LATP:  How would participants benefit from participating in your group sessions?

Angelina Iyamah-Wilson:  The Bailiwick Group sessions are geared towards helping people that have been laid off, fired or otherwise displaced from their job.  The goal of the group sessions is to enable each participant to develop a plan that will help guide them to their next opportunity.  Our group sessions focus on building networking skills, interview preparation and personal branding.  We also have outplacement support tools and tips that are effective for any level of experience.

LATP:  In today’s economy and job market, how would you empower your client(s) who are in a job and career transition to maintain a positive outlook?

Angelina Iyamah-Wilson:   We are facing unprecedented economic difficulties that have severely impacted the job market.  With the number of people entering the job market due to lay offs, employment opportunities will become increasingly competitive.  The one thing that anyone currently on the job market needs to remember at all times is that they are unique.  Although skills and experience may be common, everyone (and I do mean EVERYONE) brings with them a special quality that is unique.  Understanding your unique value, and more importantly, how to effectively communicate that value will set you apart in a competitive market.
