Adobe’s Enhanced Organizer

Adobe’s Revamped Organizer

The first development we noticed while working with the new version of Photoshop is the evolution of their Organizer. Adobe’s Organizer is a feature rich hub for both photos and videos. Users may utilize the Organizer to launch directly into Photoshop Elements for photo creation with unrivaled visual clarity or into Premier Elements 8 when creating movies.

The changes Adobe has made here are fundamental to the overall evolution of the Adobe program. In this version we found a completely enhanced Organizer, achieved through the introduction of new automated features. Adobe’s Organizer now allows users to conveniently manage photo and video digital files in just one location while simplifying tedious tasks like tagging and searching. A new Auto-Analyzer automatically analyzes and tags preferred photos and videos. The Organizer further allows for full-screen previews. You can display photos and video clips in slideshow mode within the Organizer and simultaneously make quick edits to the photos or tag the video footage.

Adobe Photoshop Elements 8

Both the standalone and bundled versions of Adobe Photoshop Elements 8 include new features as well as an extensive amount of improvement to existing tools and functions. One feature we particularly enjoyed was Adobe Photomerge Exposure, which grants the power to create perfectly lit photos with comprehensive detail by combining multiple shots of the same scene with or without flash. Even beginning Photoshop users can take advantage of the tool as we were able to perform the process with just a few mouse clicks.

Another great feature we discovered is the new Recompose tool. It provides a drag and drop option for resizing photos and does it without the distorting the integrity of the key subjects in the image. In working with Adobe Photoshops Elements 8 we found many similar improvements that make the editing process user friendly. For example, Quick Fix previews display a series of automatically adjusted versions of a single photo. This function allowed us to select the individual image with the color, contrast and lighting that we most preferred. Having the ability to simultaneously view the differences from one option to the next allowed for easier decision making than the typical trial and error editing process. Another intriguing aspect to Photoshop 8 is Adobe’s People Recognition, which intelligently identifies people in photos. The People Recognition even grew wiser over time as we added more images and the system improved at associating names with faces.

When we experimented with the Mac Version we found that Adobe had included all the features mentioned in the Windows Version while adding several Mac friendly features. Photoshop Elements 8 for Mac ideally complements iPhoto, allowing users to transcend the basics and truly tell stories with their photos. In terms of media management, we had similar access to all the features in Adobe Bridge CS4 software that were experienced when operating the Windows Version. This includes quick organization with a custom viewing workspace, full-screen preview and one click close-ups. Keyword tags and a variety of search options made finding photos faster than in previous versions of Adobe Photoshop.

Another feature of note in Photoshop Elements 8 for Mac is the Scene Cleaner, a tool for brushing away unwanted elements. With this function we were able to remove tourists from vacation photos, allowing us to take a series of photos and create the perfect scene. As with any program it all comes down to operating with ease and the Mac Version of Photoshop did not disappoint in this area. Adobe’s Smart Brush allowed us to apply incredible effects to a specific area of a photo with a single stroke. Touch-Up brushes performed common tasks more quickly, like whitening teeth or making bright blue skies. We also found that projects on Photoshop Elements 8 for Mac can be shared with family and friends online via gallery templates or personal websites through e-mail or burning CD’s and DVD’s.

Adobe Systems has also introduced Adobe Photoshop Elements 8 Plus, an upgrade option that elevates your photo editing experience to a new level. The enhanced version includes all the features from the standard version 8 while adding an exciting level of online functionality. Final Review

Overall, both the Windows and Mac Versions offered significant improvement from Version 7 of Adobe Photoshop Elements. The quick editing features insured that the improvements were achieved without having to sacrifice usability. Beginners will find they can dive into the editing process with minimal preparation and the more advanced users will enjoy the improved flexibility and freedom.

Sunscreens, energy drinks and high-tech clothing are just a few of the 800-plus consumer products made with nanomaterials: those manufactured at the scale of atoms and molecules. Sunscreen that turns clear on the skin contains titanium dioxide, an ordinary UV-blocker in extraordinarily small particles. Odor-eating socks are made with atoms of germ-killing silver. Supplement makers boast of amazing health effects from swallowing nanosolutions that are completely untested for effectiveness or safety.

Nobody — not even the world’s leading nanoscientists — knows what nanoparticles do inside the body or in the environment.

Nanotechnology, a fast-growing global industry, is essentially unregulated. “This is basically virgin territory,” says Rutgers University environmental scientist Paul Lio. “The fact that it’s virgin territory is not good for the field, and it should be fixed really quickly.”

Advocates and independent scientists agree that we need to get ahead of the risks before it’s too late. They are worried about unleashing a powerful new technology that could have vast unintended consequences.

Understanding Nano

Nanotechnology describes the ability to manufacture and manipulate minuscule materials into forms such as quantum dots, spherical buckyballs and cylindrical carbon nanotubes. These engineered nanomaterials take on unusual properties — changing color, for example, or becoming electrically conductive or penetrating cell walls. And they have many uses. Carbon nanotubes, or CNTs — made by rolling up sheets of graphite just one atom thick — are extremely light and strong; they show up in high-end tennis rackets and bicycle frames. Nanosilver is used as an antimicrobial agent in everything from paint to toothpaste to teddy bears. Nanometal oxides are blended into ceramics and coatings, making them more durable.

Nanotech offers enormous potential benefits. Medical researchers are investigating ways to use nanomaterials to target tumors and then deliver tiny amounts of drugs directly inside the cancer cells, sparing the healthy cells. Possible green tech applications include cheaper, more efficient solar panels and water-filtration systems, energy-saving batteries and lighter vehicles that use less fuel.

That’s the upside. But early research on the potential hazards of nanotech is producing major danger signs. Workers handling nanomaterials face the biggest risks. But there are concerns for consumers, too, especially with products — like cosmetics, food and supplements — that go directly on or in the body. And with potentially toxic nanomaterials washing down the drain and into the water and soil, there’s reason to worry about environmental damage as well.

Ignoring the Dangers

Studies on nanotech’s downsides are a mere nanospeck compared to the research that’s being done on how this technology can benefit humanity — and corporate profits. Of $1.5 billion in federal nano spending each year, only between 1% and 2.5% goes toward studying environmental, health and safety risks. Worse, there’s no national strategy for deciding what questions need to be answered, or what to do with those answers as they arrive.

Of the studies that have been done, results are alarming:

Last year, British researchers reported that when long, straight carbon nanotubes — shaped like asbestos fibers — were injected into mice, they caused the same kind of damage as asbestos. A follow-up study this year, by this country’s National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), found that when mice inhaled CNTs, the tiny tubes migrated from their lungs to the surrounding tissue — the very spot where asbestos causes the rare cancer known as mesothelioma.

One reason nanomaterials can cause trouble is simply that they are small enough to evade the body’s defenses. In a University of Rochester study of the accidental nanoparticles known as ultrafine pollution, they bypassed the protective blood-brain barrier and slipped directly into the brain’s olfactory bulb. Other research demonstrates that nanomaterials can penetrate into the deepest parts of the lungs. From there, they cross into the bloodstream and various organs.

Based on evidence like this, the European Union’s occupational health and safety agency issued an expert report in March, citing nanoparticles as the number-one emerging risk to workers. In the U.S., NIOSH has issued a guidance document urging employers to avoid exposing workers to nanomaterials — for example, by enclosing equipment and using ventilation to reduce dust and fumes. But NIOSH has no regulatory power; it can only suggest.

And concerns continue to grow regarding the ability of nanoparticles to contaminate other people or the environment as they come loose from our sunscreens and clothing. Nanoparticles might also wash down the drain and create dangerously toxic environments for microorganisms — or inhibit good bacteria in sewage treatment plants from doing their work.

“The take-home message for me is, the behavior of these particles is very complex,” says Cyndee Gruden, a civil engineering professor at the University of Toledo in Ohio. “When you take a nanoparticle and put it into the environment, you have to know how it’s going to behave. And we don’t”.

The House of Blues hosted an EA games event Monday night, June 22nd, to celebrate the release of its newest title: Fight Night Round 4. The latest installment in EA’s Fight Night series is yet another example of the incredible depth and realism of their boxing franchise. With the support of the powerful next-gen platform, the Xbox-360, FNR4 gave those in attendance the adrenalin-infused excitement of a real boxing match spectacle when celebrities Mike Tyson and Snoop Dog flexed their gaming skills against one another.

Tyson attended the event with his youngest daughter and new wife, and Snoop’s son was also in attendance. Attendees also had a chance to experience “Fight Night Round 4,” which players can enjoy at home or with friends on Xbox LIVE.

Although everyone had the chance to get a hand on FNR4 at the kiosks set up, the game’s presence was truly felt in the bout between Mike Tyson and Snoop Dogg. What would follow would be an epic four round brawl between these two media giants. Each hook, fall, and blood splatter drove the crowd into fits of cheers, boos, and laughter.

The fight had the House of Blues feeling more like a sold-out Madison Square Garden than a small Hollywood night spot. The crowd of invited media and special guests went wild! After a few exciting rounds, Snoop would raise his hands in sweet victory.

Tyson graciously accepted his loss and closed the fight by presenting Snoop with a five-thousand dollar donation. His check would go towards a fund for Snoop’s Youth Football League.

Celebrities who joined in the festivities included Jerry Ferrara from “Entourage” Larenz Tate from “Rescue Me” and Wood Harris from “The Wire”, members of the Wu Tang Clan and RZA, as well as two legends of boxing, Mike Tyson and Sugar Shane Moseley. Snoop Dogg, however, truly stole the show. Snoop’s vibrant personality, intense stage presence, and old school charm had the house of blues in a riot.

EA definitely kicked off their summer release of FNR4 in style. With celebrity guests, players, and performers, the event really created the media buzz the game deserved.

Editing Ease
Adobe Photoshop Elements has three levels of editing for the pro to the casual user: Full Edit, Quick Fix, and Guided Editing. The more help I can get with software the better, so I chose the Guided Editing feature which avoids all the complicated stuff. I loved the text-based guidelines that you select from a list of editing tasks. Guided Editing showed me how to adjust specific image properties such as contrast and it walked me through the process of antiquing a photo, offering various effects.

Guided Editing is a great educational tool for people like myself who are new to image editing and for more-seasoned photographers who are learning to use the program. Instead of a being daunting, it was actually fun to play with.

Fantastic Features
The Scene Cleaner was another new feature I especially enjoyed experimenting with. This program does an excellent job of removing unwanted people or objects from a photo (like my ex-husband from a family portrait!). Also, Photomerge can create a scene where everyone is looking at the camera with no sleepy-eyed expressions in seconds.

No need for expensive Crest whitening strips anymore, with a click of a mouse and another of the cool new features, the Smart Brush toothbrush tool whitens teeth faster than you can say, “Cheese!” The Smart Brush also includes a brush for saturating dull skies and a high-contrast black-and-white tool for applying effects to selected areas in your photo. As in Photoshop, you can customize the brush’s size, hardness, and spacing.

Feeling Crafty?
Adobe Photoshop Elements 7 added a number of new templates and themes for output projects, including those hot photo books. I rearranged layouts and pages, and let Elements auto-fill my pages. I was so inspired by the simplicity of the feature, I made my mom very happy by making a photo book of her favorite (and only) daughter.

Photoshop vs Photoshop Extended

Both a good product, but CS3 Production Premium comes with Photoshop Extended, which was developed for the film, video and multimedia professionals, 3D and motion graphics designers, manufacturing professionals, architects and engineers. This software is also useful for science and medical based applications.

Photoshop is more focused towards amateur and professional photographers, graphic designers and web designers. Both are available to download as a free trial or as a part of their respective creative suites.

  Well we edited over 400 images in total including The mighty Uri’s gallery of over 25 canvases, a growing portfolio of street art pieces, colorful sculptures, collaborations and even some clothes.

  Downsides
  A couple of key annoyances (for those working on the web at least) include:

  • The save to web color shift issue.
  • Updaters – Most of the CS3 apps regularly call home to see if an update is required. Some of these updates are hundreds of Mbs.
  • Consumes a lot of resources – Graphics intensive applications are always big resource eaters, Photoshop CS3 is no exception.

   

  What do we think of Adobe Photoshop CS3 Extended

  Well, the name is too long for a start.

  On a serious note, this is the best version of Photoshop ever, it has more features, runs faster and is easier to use than previous versions.

  The Flash style interface has always been the most intuitive and the UI of Photoshop is catching up fast.

Originally launched in 2007, CS3 Production Premium is a suite of high end applications focused on creating web ready content. The box version contains all the usual suspects including Photoshop, Flash, Illustrator, Premiere, After Effects and Sound booth.

Adobe CS4

With the upcoming launch of CS4 looming near, we will be comparing it to CS3 to give you a flavor for both. If you can’t wait, you can test out beta versions of Dreamweaver CS4, Fireworks CS4 and Soundbooth CS4 from the Adobe Labs

What is included
The whole package consists of 8 DVDs, (including content, video workshops, etc.), and a complete set of manuals. There’s also a free gift, but we’ll leave that as a surprise.

Installation

The installation was pretty straightforward (and considering part were upgrades & part were fresh installs, that’s pretty good). Although it took nearly 5 hours in total on a 2.33 GHz Apple Macbook Pro (with 2GB memory). Which gives you an idea just how much needs to be installed and gives you enough time to read about 1% of the accompanying manuals.

Updates

The updates (200MB+ downloads?) and patches are both irritating, (expect to see a lot of updaters and dialog boxes). Aside from that everything went as smoothly as imaginable.

First Impressions

CS3 is a collection, and whilst each application can be used on its own, the real power comes from integrated use. Photoshop with Illustrator, Illustrator with Flash…you get the idea.

This is the first time we’ve really felt the benefit of a suite of software, each *piece* is designed to compliment the rest of the set.

In fact, the whole package looks like it has evolved. The User Interface is now far more consistent, streamlining cross-use and creating more efficient products across the board.

So if you are a Photoshop expert, then learning the rest should be fairly intuitive. (Though, it still took us a while to get the hang of a couple of the applications). Clearly Adobe knows that lowering the learning curve is always a good thing.

Icons

There has been a lot of debate about the new icons. We like them, especially when looking at a cluttered OS X dock. They are more functional, easier to use/ remember, and no matter how small they become, they are easy to recognize.

So, What can you do with CS3?

Create video, images, motion graphics and publish to almost any medium (Web, Flash, iPod Video, HD content, Blu-ray discs).

Streamline the entire web and video production process. If its got graphics or motion in it, then CS3 can increase your productivity.

Create presentations, slideshows, pretty much anything you see on the web (as long as you have the necessary creative skills). CS3 supports all major video, standard-definition and HD formats.

In fact, the list is so long there is a whole website dedicated to it.

So, What did we do with it?

We built a portfolio for Uri Martinez, a Catalan artist, painter and sculptor in the north of Spain, as a place to display his uritmetica collection. Uri is one of the most talented underground artists on the street right now. His art takes a variety of forms, from canvas to street art, to sculpture, to video.

Where Shall We Begin?
When LA’s The Place & Adobe Systems (es) asked us to take a look and review Adobe CS3 (CS stands for Creative Suite, by the way), we knew it had been around for a while so we panicked brainstormed and thought we’d do something a little different.

Time for Something Unusual
We started working with CS3 a little over six months ago. The goal was to see what we could do with the software and just how useful it would be outside of a design studio environment.

Instead of just reviewing, making a tutorial, or taking a look at the latest features we wanted to actually create something.

180 days later we ended up a whole lot deeper then we could have ever imagined. (Thankfully everyone involved was patient, including Adobe).

Here’s a small piece of the story…

What could we do that hadn’t been done before?

In order to find artistic inspiration and see if we could catch a trend, we headed to Barcelona, Spain. Barcelona has been famous for its art since the 13th century, especially in the last 100 years with such greats as Picasso, Dalí, Miró & Gaudi.

Modern Spanish Style
What we were looking for was a group of willing artists that we could bring into the digital age and share with the web – with some hard work, Adobes help, a little web experience, and not much else.

The Toolkit
Armed with a copy of Adobe CS3, a laptop, no understanding of the Spanish language (which wouldn’t have helped as the people of Barcelona speak Catalan for the most part anyway), a camera, and our sense of humor, we headed into the heart of the city to see what we could find.

We discovered that art is everywhere in this city. There is no shortage of talented people and many are yet to engage seriously with the web, but more on that later.

Meanwhile here’s a little background on the what, where & how…

Our Idea
To produce a real working portfolio of a modern artist using the full range of Adobe Applications available in Adobe Creative Suite 3. This means web work, image manipulation, videos, audio & more.

Testing how CS3 handles the tasks on the road under real life conditions whilst actually trying to produce professional work.

Keeping it Raw
Our intention was not to create a polished studio production, there are plenty of talented people and companies out there that can do that. Anyone in the online design world knows Adobe products are some of the most professional tools out there for producing quality work. (Macromedia could have given them a run for their money. Now Macromedia is a core part of Adobe).

Our goal was to capture something raw and digitize it for all to see.

A (very) Brief History of Adobe

For those that are unaware, Adobe has been around for longer than most of the Internet, (see Timeline). Since those early days Adobe has come a long way.

Although sometimes they get bad publicity, almost every website you will see has been touched (in some cases mutilated) by an Adobe product of some kind. Yes, even the sites complaining about Adobe are mostly built with Adobe products. Gotta love irony.

Think about it, Youtube works thanks to Flash. How much great content would Stumbleupon have without Adobe? How would flickr look without Photoshop?

Whilst we are on the topic of social networks, it is worth checking out the new Photoshop Express which lets you perform basic image editing like cropping, resizing, and storing for free (you will need to download the AIR plugin)

For those of you looking for more professional options, then as far as integrated design packages Adobe Creative Suite 3 is where it’s at.

We were surprised just how much is included within the suite. An option to exclude manuals from delivery would be a welcome addition, (environmentally speaking).

The entire package weighs more than a bowling ball (we didn’t actually measure it and we doubt we could bowl it, but it was Heavy). The box contains:

• Full suite software on a set of DVDs
• Help DVDs
• Manuals for each application (makes up the majority of the weight)

Of course we needed something to run all this on, so we used:

• A 15 inch Apple MacBook Pro
• TextEdit from Apple (most text editors will use this)
• A compact Nikon digital camera (the kind you are likely to have at home for taking snaps) and a professional digital SLR
• Some willing talent

We will be featuring the artwork of talented artists within the Barcelona, Spanish & International art scene.

The artist we are focusing on and his friends (who command significant international recognition in their own right) are collaborating on a number of projects that will unfold along with this series.
