“Successful businesses of any size know that now is the best time to advertise,” says AJ Ogaard, marketing expert with Kaeser & Blair, a promotional products giant. “The competition is feeling paralyzed – pulling back and waiting for the storm to blow over. Smart companies see new opportunities and find new ways of doing things, while staying closely connected to customers”.

LOOK FOR OPPORTUNITIES

In a slower economy there is no shortage of ways savvy small business owners can grow and succeed. Of the nine local businesses surveyed for this article (see SOS: Secrets of Success, below, for their tips), all had some ideologies in common: They kept to their core values, met customers’ needs, and took a creative approach. From opening up additional markets, to finding new ways of advertising and cutting costs, longevity of their businesses – not short-term band-aid solutions – was their main goal.

TRIM THE FAT

A quick fix for many is reducing costs, most notably overhead. Some companies have moved to strictly being a web-based presence with no store front, while others have begun to co-share space with others companies. One publisher simply reduced the size of her quarterly printed guide by a mere 8-pages, saving a substantial amount on printing costs while offering customers the same perceived value.

Outsourcing non-essential services is also fast becoming a popular option as removing repetitive and time-consuming tasks frees staff to perform other more important duties. Tim Ferriss, author of the New York Time Bestseller, “The 4-Hour Workweek“, is a true believer in outsourcing. His lifestyle design blog, 4hourblog.com, features case studies on how small businesses have successfully used outsourcing to gain an edge, save money and open up more time to enjoy life.

REMEMBER THE BIG PICTURE

Cutting costs is a viable solution when things are tight, but it’s easy to lose sight of the big picture. Some businesses randomly reduce services, cut needed staff, and even skimp on product quality, with no plan in mind. Often, those short-term solutions fail because businesses lose what made them great in the first place.

“It’s important to stick by the core principles that define your business philosophy”, says Ray Maietta, a Ph.D. Sociologist and President of ResearchTalk, Inc., a qualitative research consulting company. “When times are tough, it is risky to make quick decisions. Remember that you’re in it for the long haul. Decisions you make now become part of the image you put forth for your company. Make sure you’re comfortable with a customer saying: ‘I remember when they…’ While we all risk losing money at these times, we don’t have to risk comprising our principles”.

OUT WITH OLD MARKETING, IN WITH NEW

Creative businesses also use free and low cost new media as a way to connect with current and potential clients. “New media” encompasses fast-growing social media and social bookmarking internet sites such as Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, Digg, LinkedIn, and StumbleUpon as well as viral videos placed on top video sharing and social networking sites. Viral video is the most effective way to spread the world about products and services by maximizing online views. Properly tagged and distributed videos push brands to the top of popular search engines such as Yahoo and Google. 1. Stick to Your Standards

What is the one thing you are doing that you believe is the most effective?
From a creative point of view it’s the variety, we are constantly coming up with new flavors. From a business view, we only sell online so we don’t have a storefront. This creates less overhead.

I believe the most important factor in our continued success is our marketing and advertising programs. We have focused very strongly on social Internet marketing over the past two years, actively engaging in online forums (one of which we own and has 4,000 participating members) and blogs.

Advice:
“The biggest piece of advice I can give is to look for the opportunities during this downturn. Advertisers are cutting back. This means discounted radio spots, television spots, lowered PPC averages, etc. So many of our competitors are cutting back and/or going out of business, the playing field is starting to thin. Those that can ward off the feeling of despair and focus on growth and new opportunities will come out of this downturn stronger than ever before”.

4. Find Out What Your Clients Want

What is the one thing you are doing that you believe is the most effective?
Our mission is to positively impact the highest number of people possible, with the healing power of natural, organic nutrition. And we’ve experienced growth each quarter. We credit this success to keeping our product affordable. So we created a direct consumer marketing model that eliminates costly markups by retailers and allows us to cut our prices by 50%.

Advice:
“Continue to market your product. Consider cost-effective methods such as networking and PR. Communicate with your clients – find out what they need, what they want, what they fear, what they treasure. Offer added value to your product or service based on the responses you receive from your target”.

Re-evaluate and refocus business strategy in a creative way to combat the down economy. We began targeting affluent customers, production companies of reality TV shows, and even celebrities to battle the recession, knowing that this group is less affected.

Providing a high quality product. I make most of my money through syndication and selling advertising. Both are made possible by the fact that buyers like my content.

I focus on my success and when I fail, I look for lessons that I can take away to improve next time and still feel good about what I did”.

Sales. But not in the traditional sense of the word. Sales is really about relationships and we are finding that being a trusted partner to other established and successful businesses mean that when they down size, but have an important client they have to provide top level service in, they call us. 90% of our business comes not directly from our clients but from our established partners.

“Good relationships. Keep good relationships with all customers, partners, suppliers, employees, and potential – customers, partners, suppliers and employees. Today’s social media means that reputation is everything and travels very quickly. If during a down turn you can look after ‘your people’ they will look after you”.

Protecting our brand and making sure everything we do is of the highest quality. We created momentum during the ‘up’ economic time and that momentum is carrying us through the downturn. Our goal has never been to compete on price but feel we compete with no one else out there on quality. We are ‘obsessive’ over finding and nurturing talent and being a talent friendly company.

Advice:
“Take the time to understand your brand/what your mission statement is and focus on where you need to be. We are putting things in place right now that will set us up in the long run. We are constantly strategizing for the future. In our industry, when so much change is happening quickly, we are looking past the horizon. While everyone is in ‘damage’ control mode, we are looking past this downturn and concentrating on the opportunities ahead this year and in years to come”.

9. Remain Positive and Believe in Yourself

Walking into the lobby, it is clear Hasblady has perfected the ultimate salon atmosphere. Testosterone
Testosterone is a powerful anabolic hormone that stimulates and controls the development of muscle, bone, skin, sex organs and most other masculine, physical features. Scientists have recently discovered that this hormone also aids in mental function and enhances visual and perceptual skills. During puberty, testosterone is released in high doses which increases lean muscle mass, sex organ development, bone formation and higher energy levels. Testosterone levels peak during a man’s early to mid twenties and then starts to decrease as they age. By the time the average man reaches 60, he will have lost almost 50% of his testosterone supply. Stress, lack of sleep, physical inactivity, the use of prescription medication and drinking can also add to the decline in testosterone levels. 

The Effects of Low Testosterone
A report in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism states that men are displaying significantly lower levels of testosterone than they had 10 to 20 years ago. The signs of low testosterone include fatigue, depression, low sex drive, irritability, loss of motivation, insomnia and weight gain. In addition, researchers at the Department of Family and Preventive Medicine at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) School of Medicine conducted a long-term study that found men with low testosterone had a 33% higher risk of death compared to men with higher levels.

Getting Tested
Even though more than 40 million men suffer from low testosterone, few of them receive treatment. If a man experiences two or more of the above symptoms, they should get tested. However, when checking testosterone levels, doctors generally only test  total testosterone (protein-bound), which remains relatively stable over time. So when going to the doctor men should specifically ask to have their bio-available (free) testosterone assessed, which generally declines at a rate of 2% each year beginning at age 30. We are always hearing about the charitable work stars are doing here and abroad, but we usually never get a chance to see it. This Thursday, June 26, a special edition of “Nightline” will feature footage of Ben Affleck’s most recent trip to Africa. Affleck states that “people should see actors on television doing charitable work and be suspicious of that. At the end of watching this, I hope they find themselves less suspicious of that and more interested in this and perhaps involved in it."

The multi-talented actor, writer, producer and director has made three trips in the last eight months to the Congo region. On his last trip “Nightline” producer, Max Culhane, and photographer Doug Vogt, joined Affleck on his journey through hospitals, clinics and refugee camps. The three met warlords, child soldiers, relief workers and members of parliament in an effort to learn first-hand about one of the world’s most devastating humanitarian crises.

More than 4 million people have died in the region. The conflict is considered to be the deadliest since the Holocaust in World War II. The non-stop fighting, combined with disease and starvation, is estimated to take about 45,000 lives per month since 1998.

We’ve learned through Affleck’s exploration, that one in five children die before reaching age five. Children who survive are often forced into serving as child soldiers for militia groups – groups who terrorize the population.

“Congo is in terrible shape,” Affleck says. “What’s going on here in this country is humanitarian disaster.” He explains that the mission statement for his journey in Africa and the resulting video essay for “Nightline”, will hopefully help people understand the situation more thoroughly. “I think just helping people understand could have a real ripple effect down the road and this piece will be one small incremental step in that.”

Live Nation taped the show in order to ensure that Paddy’s performance will live on well beyond the event. And legendary rock and roll photographer Mick Rock captured photographs to display in White Space shows in-property. The ravishing “Amazing Race” contestant Shana Wall hosted “The Dogs Next Door,” a spectacular star-studded event benefiting the non-profit animal welfare organization, Dogs In Danger. The Reality Cares’ event was held at Michael Scott’s posh Beverly Park private estate in Beverly Hills, where reality television’s top stars came with families and of course their four-legged friends to help an organization that is close to their hearts. "Every four seconds a dog is needlessly euthanized in our country alone, simply due to lack of space in our shelters".

When I learned about the mission of Dogs in Danger I jumped at the opportunity to be their national spokesperson," states Shana Wall. "My hope is that our fundraiser brings awareness to this issue so that we can continue to save these dogs from their otherwise tragic fates".

After her stint on “Amazing Race,” Wall jumped at the opportunity to get involved with Dogs In Danger, and help in any way that she can. “L.A. people love animals so much that you know you can get people together for the animals because we’re such a great city of people that love animals, which is amazing. So it came together nicely,” Wall stated at the function. 

The event was a great fundraising event that not only raised money for this organization, but also was a fun and fabulous way to enjoy the sun and mingle with other celebrities who share concern and love for their pets.

Dogs In Danger launched in October 2007, with an important goal in mind: to get shelter dogs adopted into loving homes before their time runs out. The Roxy Theatre, Whisky A-Go-Go, House of Blues, Viper Room, Key Club, and the Cat Club are uniting with the City of West Hollywood, and the Sunset Strip Business Association to promote the three-day music festival that is expected to draw more than 9,000 fans, VIPs and music industry leaders to the 1.3-mile stretch of history.

A celebrity kick off event will start the ball rolling at 8 pm on Thursday, June 26th at the House of Blues.  Sugar Ray front man and Extra host Mark McGrath will emcee the special opening night party that will pay tribute to the Godfathers of the Sunset Strip – Lou Adler, Mario Maglieri, and Elmer Valentine. Performances by Everclear, Soul Asylum, and Camper Van Beethoven will finish off the evening.

Friday and Saturday will have some of today’s hottest artists playing at each of the clubs well into the wee hours of the night. Honorees Pierce Brosnan, Virginia Madsen, Felicity Huffman and Dennis Quaid are set to attend this year’s festival.

A tribute and intimate conversation will be held on June 12th, where Brosnan, Madsen and Quaid will each receive their awards.

Brosnan will receive the Maverick Award, which honors a film artist for their commitment to making movies that matter and their efforts to work for both environmental justice and the triumph for all Life on Earth.

Madsen will be receiving the Navigator Award, of which Greg Kinnear and William Hurt are past recipients. This award honors a film artist who carves a path of distinction through tough waters of the entertainment industry without having to sacrifice their own commitment to excellence in order to do so.

The Galaxy award will be given to Quaid. Joan Allen is a previous recipient of this award, which honors a film artist whose ongoing delivery of star-making performances “guarantees a spotlight in the constellation of cinematic stardom.”

On June 13th, Huffman will be receiving the Nova Award, an award previously given to Claire Danes, which honors a film artist who’s consistent in infusing each character they play with a unique insight and wisdom, thereby delivering original and seamless performances. In addition, Huffman’s film, “Phoebe in Wonderland” (co-starring Elle Fanning, Bill Pullman and Patricia Clarkson) will also be screened at this festival.

National Missing Children’s Day was established in 1983 by Ronald Reagan after a series of high-profile missing-children cases became national headlines. Stirring shock to the nation’s consciousness, these cases brought mass attention to the seriousness of child victimization and forever changed the response by law-enforcement agencies to reports of missing children. This annual reminder to the nation is to renew efforts to reunite missing children with their families and make child protection a national priority.

To support this national cause, the Citadel Outlets have collaborated with the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children this year to display the faces of more than 100 missing children from the state of California on eight massive high-definition LED billboard signs. These signs will be visible for a ¼ of a mile along Interstate 5.

The LED (Light Emitting Diodes) billboards will display the message Have You Seen This Child? 1-800-THE-LOST. Seen by over 150,000 local freeway commuters every day, the LED signs span 1,700 square feet of linear frontage. The 24 ft. by 31 ft. high LED billboards have a high definition outdoor display quality. The goal of these billboards is to galvanize the entire community to assist in the search for and the safe recovery of a child.

Of the approximate 262,000 children abduction each year in America, 78% are abducted by their own family members. Michael S. Smith, a Walnut Creek, California father whose children were abducted eleven years ago will be in attendance supporting the cause. During a difficult custody battle, Michael’s ex-wife Elizabeth Ann Stratton abducted their children Zachary now 17 and Chelsea now 14 back in December of 1997. "For every case of abduction by a stranger, there are over 1,900 cases like mine".

A musical set in the Depression era, Flora, The Red Menace focuses on a young woman who tries to make it on her own in New York City.  Once there, Flora falls for a member of the Communist Party and finds herself caught between her heart and her head on her quest for happiness.

While the animated "Family Guy" may be on the tamer side, the live performance is expected to be a bit racier and parental discretion is advised.
