The Ford Amphitheatre in Los Angeles will host a benefit performance of CHESS on September 17, 2007. The Tim Rice, Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus musical, produced by Brian Michael Purcell will be performed at the outdoor venue to raise money for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. (Two more dancers are still being sought as of 8/12.)

This special event will star Tony-nominee Susan Egan (Beauty and the Beast, Cabaret, Triumph of Love), Kevin Earley (Thoroughly Modern Millie, Les Miserables), Cindy Robinson (Into The Woods, Carousel, Peter Pan), Thomas Griffith (The Best Little Whorehouse Texas, 1776 at Hollywood Bowl), Eric Kunze (Jesus Christ Super Star Nat’l tour, Miss Saigon), Tom Schmid (Annie Get Your Gun, The Last Empress) and Matthew Morrison (The Light in the Piazza, Hairspray tour, 10 Million Miles) with Musical direction by Dan Redfield (Little Women) and Emmy Award winning choreography by A.C. Ciulla (Footloose, Tony nomination).

First performed in 1984, the stunning intelligent demanding musical went through several changes. CHESS centers around a chess championship involving an American and a Russian. The chess game becomes more than just a chess game. Lives are at stake. Political emotions tear at the core, threats become more than just a game piece across a board, and lives are twisted from competing emotions.

This cutting edge, multimedia benefit event will be presented in honor of director and choreographer Jim Alexander, who died on May 25th, 2007 of heart failure. Jim had conceived the idea for this special event. Alexander was the former Producing Artistic Director of Lyric Theatre of Oklahoma. He received numerous awards and critical acclaim for his productions of West Side Story, Song and Dance, The Pirates of Penzance, A Chorus Line, Evita, Godspell, The World Goes ‘Round, Man of La Mancha, An Inspector Calls, Always…Patsy Cline, Peter Pan, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Die Fledermaus, Guys and Dolls, Fiddler on The Roof and Jesus Christ Superstar. He had most recently directed Song and Dance: Tell Me on a Sunday, starring his wife, Cindy Robinson, which opened on February 24th, 2007 in The Deaf West Theatre in North Hollywood. He was also the Founder and CEO of The Quest Theatre Company.

Producer Purcell wrote: "After the show that night (Song and Dance) we all went out for dinner and Jim and I started talking about the theatre business. It was like I was talking with another me. In the midst of our conversation Jim brings up that the next show he wanted to produce which was Chess. Originally, Jim had talked to me about playing Freddie opposite Cindy in the production and I was very much interested. I also told him that I have a production company and why don’t we co-produce. He became very interested.

We came to an agreement about ideas for the cast, the look and concept of the show, etc. For the next month we had numerous lunch and phone meetings, we even looked at the Ford Amphitheatre in Hollywood and fell in love with space and put a hold on it. Everything was going smoothly and the collaboration was on. I felt like we had been working with each other for years….(On the morning I learned that) Jim Alexander had suffered a fatal heart attack, I was speechless and cried for hours. I had not only lost a partner and mentor but a close friend. I could not even imagine how Cindy was feeling. But out of the darkest moments must come the light. I drove to the Ford that morning and put down the deposit for the show. I pulled myself as an actor out of the show and now I was in Jim’s shoes as Director and Producer. This is what Jim wanted and what he lived for. So there was no way I was not going to put this show on. It had meaning before being a fundraiser for BC/EFA, Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, but now it has even more meaning and heart! We are doing this in the memory of Jim Alexander husband, father, friend, producer, director and mentor to everyone he met."

Hollywood casting director Pixie Monroe who is also the producer of another charitable project-a celebrity podcast show benefiting St Jude Children’s Research Hospital entitled CastingHopeTM. is casting the ensemble dancers/singers for the event. Ms Monroe told her publicist: "I’m so excited to have been called in on this incredible project. The people involved are truly remarkable and watching this production emerge only inspires one to want to give more. I have been up several nights looking through the dance submissions on the breakdowns and can tell you that the cream of the crop from the dance industry are wanting to be apart of this exciting "Chess" production. I want to cast them all!" Auditions will be on July 28th. The final decisions will be made by producer Brian Purcell and choreographer A.C. Ciulla. A.C. will be flying in from NY to LA for the auditions.

The Hollywood and Highland location welcomed over 100 hundred people to watch Marcus cook Chocolate Pancakes w/Pineapple Cashew Salad and Beef Stir-fry w/Mango Couscous.

To accompany the dishes, Andrew Linnemann provided a coffee pairing to show the audience how the flavor of the foods and flavor of the coffee complimented each other.

Samples of both dishes and the accompanying coffees were provided to the audience for tasting. After the cooking demonstration, Marcus participated in a book signing for his new cookbook Discovery of a Continent: Foods, Flavors, and Inspirations from Africa.

Rob Zombie’s Halloween premiered at the Grauman’s Chinese Theatre in Hollywood on Thursday, August 23rd. Zombie’s revealingly raw re-envisionment of the John Carpenter classic seemed at home in the historic and dugeonesque Grauman’s Chinese. The theatre’s facade of Chinese dragons and saber-tooth dogs watched over a playfully horrific red carpet scene and later the theatre’s monumental red curtains opened to unveil a journey into the reticently lethal life and mind of Michael Myers.
Attendees of the premiere included the film’s industry-respected cast and producers accompanied by their friends, many of whom are also notables in the entertainment world. Malcolm McDowell, who plays Michael Myers’ psychiatrist in the film, attended and brought along his Heroes co-star Jimmy Jean-Louis. Scout Taylor-Compton, who plays Michael’s sister in the film, came with her boyfriend musician Andy 6. Returning veteran of the Halloween franchise Danielle Harris came with boyfriend actor Coby McLaughlin and her friend actress Natalia Cigliuti. Producer Harvey Weinstein came with his brother producer Bob Weinstein. And Rob Zombie rock regally roamed the red carpet with his wife actress Sheri Moon Zombie, who plays the mother of Michael Myers in the film. The cast raved about how much fun they had working on the film and with its director, including actor Lew Temple who said, "You know that guy in high school that was so cool and you wanted to hang out with? That’s Rob Zombie." Zombie said on being a director whom actors like to work with, "Everything’s serious business, but you gotta have fun cause if it’s not fun why do it."
The new Halloween focuses more on the early life of Myers and as a result child actors played significant roles in this relatively hard-R film. However, young stars Daeg Faerch and Skyler Gisondo clarified that the actual making of the film fortunately wasn’t so scary. Gisando, 11, said on the premiere’s red carpet that, "when you’re on set, people mess up, there’s bloopers, and you know what’s actually happening and it appears funny somehow. Of course if I saw the movie I’d be scared, but after working on the movie, not so much." Surprisingly, yet logically, many of the children in the movie did not actually attend the premiere night’s screening. Daeg Faerch, 12, who plays the young Michael Myers, will be allowed to see the movie "when he’s old enough," according to his Mom. On getting into the role of the murderous villain, Daeg said, "Yeah, I felt it. But then when I was killing some people, behind the mask I was just cracking up." A chilling statement to read, but his emphasis was that that he and his young co-stars saw it simply as a childhood game of make-believe that happened to be filmed.
After the premiere’s screening attendees praised the movie’s intense scaryness. According to strikingly craggy veteran horror actor Danny Trejo, the movie "even scared me." One attendee described herself as "still kind of shaking," though she didn’t seem to mind, while another enjoyed the horror movie experience of having the girls he sat next to almost jumping into his lap throughout the screening. Young attendees that were allowed and brave enough to watch the film included actress Taylor Dooley, 14, who said after, "I thought it was great. Scary movies really freak me out and it was really scary. It freaked me out a lot."
Rob Zombie’s Halloween is a brutally scary, yet intelligent horror movie and Zombie’s musical background is evident in its strong score and sound effects. The film’s unmasking of Michael Myers’ childhood slightly outshines its later re-telling of his return to Haddonfield, where Zombie does not attempt the subtle anticipatory fear of the original. Yet most leave the theatre a fan and horror hypnotically willing to consider a studio insider’s statement that, "Rob Zombie can do no wrong."

The Beach on Sunset, the new restaurant/lounge, which celebrated it’s grand opening on the Sunset Strip on Wednesday night may prove to be Hollywood’s newest hotspot.

The Sunset Strip has always been a popular choice for anyone looking for a night of dancing, drinking or enjoying live music, so it’s no surprise that film producer and nightlife entrepreneur, Steve Marlton, would choose this famed location to unveil his spacious yet serene restaurant and lounge.

Jesse McCartney kicked off the opening night celebration, performing a full set on the second story of the swank lounge. Jesse didn’t disappoint anyone who may have come out especially to see him, keeping the place packed as the enthusiastic crowd danced the night away. DJ Steve Akoi later took over, continuing to keep the energy going with patrons that were sure to party until the wee hours of the night.

With a sail-like architectural tensile fabric entry, the lounge houses a two-story interior. The contemporary décor, glass and steal accents along with teak wood, create a fabulous seaside ambiance. The first floor, reminiscent of a luxurious beach house with long tables and cozy booths, is the main cocktail/dining lounge, while the upper level provides a more intimate atmosphere, also converting into a private lounge for special events.

Two patios allow you plenty of space to enjoy the evening outside, overlooking the famed strip and the beautiful Los Angeles skyline, while the outdoor cabanas give the option of some privacy if you’d like to draw the curtains closed.

It’s not only the modern furnishings that might make you feel like you’re on the beach, but five unique cocktails serve to do that as well. The specialty drinks,

all with appropriately themed names and ranging from 21 ounces to a huge 60 ounce serving, have been concocted with the summery beach essence in mind. So whether you order a Tidal Wave, Rum Keg, Shark Attack, Fog Cutter or Wipe Out, expect a tasty drink that you just might be sipping on all throughout the night!

Averaging at only $16 a plate, the menu features modern and international items by executive chef, Michael Brown. Featured items include paella risotto cakes; baked crimini mushrooms; rock shrimp quesadillas; blackened filet mignon tacos; jumbo lump crab cake; shanghai BBQ wings as well as the sturdy staples such as macaroni and cheese.

You can enjoy a dining experience Monday- Thursday from 4pm to midnight, Fridays from 4:00 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. or you can take advantage of their weekend brunch specials as they open at 9:00 a.m. on Saturdays and Sundays and close at 1:30 a.m.

Reservations are available, though not mandatory. So if you feel like hitting up the strip, walk right in at 8240 Sunset Blvd. The restaurant offers valet parking for $10 or you can choose to find street parking when available.

For special events, you can contact Jean-Pierre at 310- 927-0202.

Seductive and successful singer-songwriter Pat Monahan releases his debut solo album, "Last of Seven," on Columbia Records, which finds the sultry and soulful artist exploring soul rock, pop music and gospel rhythms. This CD takes his characteristic soaring, emotive vocals and powerful storytelling lyrics-behind such distinctive hits as "Drops of Jupiter," "Meet Virginia," and "Calling All Angels," into a whole new dimension.

While temporarily side stepping Grammy award winning Train, Monahan declares that this record is anything but a public declaration that Train has reached its final destination. "In many aspects of Train I would be considered the leader of the group," explains Monahan, "I am considered simply one member of Train with equal say which works incredibly well for the band, but not always for the art."

"On this project I became the leader on all levels and so there was no sacrifice or compromise. But soon I realized that the last thing that I want is for these songs I’ve written with other people reflect poorly on Train. When people ask, ‘Is Train broken up?’ It’s very much the opposite. The guys have been extremely supportive on this record. They want this album to do well – as any friend would for any friend and I want the same for them. For me, making this album makes Train live longer instead of the opposite being true."

This compelling musician finds himself writing a revelatory song cycle offering the most intimate, powerful, and eclectic set of songs of his career. Working with producer Patrick Leonard at the helm (Madonna, Roger Waters, Elton John) Leonard was able to extract some pop gems, sentimental ballads and gospel imbues touches. "We (Patrick & Monahan) played together it felt magical and the whole process would be extremely spontaneous." Monahan says that he finds himself in a good place in his life.

On "Last of Seven," the title track Monahan says that he always described himself as the "last of seven children" and "Patrick loved the phrase, so he wrote this beautiful brief piece of music. The lyrics spell out this sentiment," ‘from the steel mills of Pennsylvania (his hometown) to the piers of the Puget Sound (where he lives now) "Here I am/the last of seven.’ "It’s who I am."

On this disc Monahan is joined by Brandi Carlile on the duet "Pirate on the Run." While Graham Nash lends background vocals to "Cowboys & Indians, as Richie Sambora adds acoustic guitar to "Someday."

"Her Eyes," the album opener and first single is an up-tempo number inspired by Monahan’s girlfriend and daughter. This represents a new chapter for the frontman just as "Drops of Jupiter" was about a trip that a girl was on this is about a trip that I’m on. This track is beautiful, wonderful and funny.

Also, on the disc is the choir-backed song "Someday," dealing with topics of the after-life. During recording this track Monahan realized, "I wasn’t riding the road towards another Train record, I was on a different road."

"Ooh My My," a stand out rocker by this sexy musician strikes a cord with his female audience. "Raise Your Hands," a gospel imbued tune was especially "created for a live performance but the song is about that moment when everyone can come together and feel the same way about something."

Rounding out the back end of the disc is "Ripple In The Water," a song about the excitement in life. "At this point in my career, I really want more from myself than just making a ripple in the water. I would like to make a real difference to somebody – if only to myself.

Monahan has proven that he can set himself apart from Train and create his own distinctive set of songs with a message of hope and renewal. This talented songwriter explores the ups and downs in life and comes out on top. Be sure to pick up the new release soon.

The legendary Judy Collins released her 44th album, "Judy Collins Sings Lennon & McCartney" on her own label Wildflower Records. Although Collins has recorded songs by celebrated songwriters such as Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell and Leonard Cohen and others, Collins only recorded one song written by John Lennon & Paul McCartney. She recorded "In My Life" in 1966 and included it on her groundbreaking album of the same title.. "Hard to believe, isn’t it?" says Collins. "I think I was meant to wait and do their songs all at once", Judy says about the forthcoming CD.

Choosing some of her favorite Lennon & McCartney penned songs, the CD features Judy’s inspired interpretations of songs like "Blackbird", "Norwegian Wood", "The Long And Winding Road", "Penny Lane" and others. To her these songs "possess a level of deep spirituality that I have always appreciated. It’s nourishing music."

"Judy Collins Sings Lennon & McCartney" was recorded in just three days. Produced by Judy herself along with TKNAME, and with input from her keyboardist Russell Walden. It features Collins playing piano on most tracks as well as bassists Tony Levin and Zev Katz, drummer Tony Beard, and guitarist Larry Campbell.

Over the course of her memorable 47 year career Judy Collins has shared her diverse talents in the form of music, books and film. Judy just released a book titled "The Seven T’s: Finding Hope and Healing in the Wake of Tragedy", and continues to be such a strong voice for people who have lost someone to suicide; she has become somewhat of a "Dr. Wayne Dyer" if you will. She has given countless talks and lectures and has shared her own story that millions of people have found comfort in. The Grammy winner is also an accomplished painter, actress and an in demand key-note speaker on the subject of mental health. www.judycollins.com

As a singer, songwriter, model and producer, she’s making quite an impact in the states, as well as the rest of the world. Having released her sophomore effort, "A Girl Like Me," on SE Entertainment Records, Nikkole has proven she’s here to stay.

After the release of her initial recordings, Nikkole quickly became the number one independent singer in the U.S. by way of mp3.com, one of the first major music websites. Due to her unique and powerful voice, Nikkole was given the Best Pop Album award from Radio Free Virgin and JPF in 2001, beating out over 7,000 other independently released albums. The same group named Nikkole’s single "Over It" as one of the Top 20 Best Pop Singles in 2003. For this she merely had to beat out 25,000 other indie songs.

"A Girl Like Me" has been added to medium or heavy rotation on over 60 commercial radio stations (including Clear Channel) in the U.S., as well as radio stations in Europe, Asia and Australia. Her impressive five-octave range and powerful vocals have made such a huge impact in Japan, that she has become one of the first American pop artists to record two songs in Japanese.

Described as "musical poetry with a pop/urban sound", "A Girl Like Me" is reminiscent of classic R&B, but infused with a fresh updated style. Nikkole’s deep sultry voice may initially come as a surprise, but it’s clear she knows how to work her vocals to achieve just the right tone.

Playing it cool and mellow, Nikkole offers up the soulful "It’s Too Late", then switches it up in the sexy and flirtatious "Lollipop" and even rocks out a bit in the soul searching "That’s What Life’s About." Her feisty tale of leaving her no-good cheatin’ man, "Gon’ Bounce" is already getting plenty of play on the radio, as well as in clubs. Receiving quality backup, "A Girl Like Me" includes tracks featuring Melle Mel, The Emotions, Shadii and Wendy & Wyann with Sober.

Nikkole’s hard work and obvious abilities have opened the door for her to work with many legendary entertainers in her field. Not only has she written songs for The Emotions and The Commodores, she has also lent her considerable vocal and writing talents to Norman Brown’s new CD, "Stay With Me" which has enjoyed the #1 spot on Billboard’s Contemporary Jazz Charts for 8 weeks and stayed in the top 10 for at least 16 weeks.

In addition, Nikkole has worked with other legendary performers such as Gregory Hines, Whoopi Goldberg, Cedric the Entertainer, Patrice Rushen, Babyface and Sheree Brown. Her music can also be heard on film soundtracks for "The Brothers", "Biker Boyz", "Love and Action in Chicago" and "Just Another Romantic Wrestling Comedy."

Not only is she an accomplished musician, Nikkole is also a successful model who has worked for Seychelles Footwear, Joe’s Jeans, LF Larchmont, A Catherine Original and Smashbox Cosmetics. She has also been featured in issues of Ironman Japan, BRE (Black Renaissance Exclusive) and Ebony.

Nikkole’s maxi-single "Breathe", off her CD "A Girl Like Me" will include 5 mixes of the cut and will be available on September 4th. Co-produced by Nikkole and Wallace Hall, "A Girl Like Me", as well as her other releases can be found at cdbaby.com or on iTunes.

Hosted by Jaime Pressly (My Name is Earl) the event showcased many of the celebrities’ considerably interesting singing talents. A big highlight of the evening included America Ferrara (Ugly Betty), who after receiving the wining bid on a Toyota Prius, joined Jerry O’Connell (Crossing Jordan) and Eddie Kaye Thomas (American Pie) who came on stage dressed in drag. Their sexily hilarious routine was hard to beat, but that didn’t stop Michael Urie (Ugly Betty) and Becki Newton (Ugly Betty) from belting out the sentimental Neil Diamond and Barbara Streisand tune "You Don’t Bring Me Flowers" dressed in full on tribute garb. Linda Cardellini (ER) and Parminder Nagra (ER) followed this up by passing out condoms to Bon Jovi’s "Bad Medicine" and Olivia Newton John’s "Let’s Get Physical." Then of course there was Sara Ramirez (Grey’s Anatomy) who brought the house down with a more serious turn singing a soulful and powerful ballad.

The evening’s host also got in on the act when Pressly unexpectedly serenaded Milo Ventimiglia (Heroes) with "Fever." To top the evening off, the cast of Heroes got on stage for a rousing rendition of "Let the Sun Shine In", and were joined by the 30 person Agape choir for the evening’s grand finale.

The man behind the jam-packed event was Michael Medico who couldn’t have been more pleased with the turn out. Extolling on the generosity of the Hollywood players who made the evening such a success, Medico exclaimed, "I am so deeply touched by the many people that generously participated from the performers to the people backstage. Hot in Hollywood is a dream come true to me and I am thrilled that we could make this event so amazing and in the process raise money and awareness for our two charities, AHF and ALEGRIA."

Held at the Henry Fonda Music Box Theatre in Hollywood, the star-studded gala allowed the celebrities to kick back and show off another side of themselves. But not only was the evening a great time, it also raised a lot of money for two very worthwhile charities.

The top five finalists dwindled down to two and finally, one man, Damian Raven emerged as the winner.

“I really wanted this!” Raven, 33, exclaimed just moments after being crowned. Along with the title, he’s also the recipient of a $1,000.00 prize.

He was joined on stage by his teenaged son who reacted to his father’s victory with a simple “It’s cool.”

Perhaps it’s his bond with his son that made Raven sensitive to the issues facing children today. When asked onstage what is the number one conflict in American society that he wants to change and why, Raven replied that he knows the obvious choice is war, but made it clear that what our youth is experiencing is very difficult. Claiming that it takes a village to raise a child, he went on to say that he’d like to change the conflict with kids because they’re fighting for their own place in this world.

An actor in TV commercials since the age of six and currently a writer and actor on the Here TV series, “The D.L. Chronicles,” Raven chose to showcase his singing and songwriting abilities for the talent portion of the competition. Letting his sentimental side shine through, he performed an original song he wrote for his best friend’s wedding. The ballad moved the audience and wowed the judges enough to vote him the winner of the talent portion of the competition before the question and answer portion eventually cinched him the title. Raven is now set to start production on “The Cash Collectors”, produced by Nevada Films.

First runner-up, Michael Wade, also impressed the audience with his talent for acting, which he demonstrated in an emotional monologue from the play “Closer.” He may not have won the talent award, but he impressed the judges in just about every other aspect of the competition, winning the awards for Best in Casual Wear, Best in Beachwear, and eventually, the second place prize. Wade also secured the audience vote and was named Mr. Popularity during the pageant.

The award for Best in Formal wear went to the second runner-up, M. Christopher Lee, a former Iraq War veteran who admitted that his proudest achievement is surviving Iraq.

The award for Most Photogenic went to Korken Alexander.

Celebrating ethnic diversity and showing the flexibility of man towards the many issues of life, this marked the first annual Mr. Earth USA competition, though franchise pageants are held in other countries, including China, Australia, and Malaysia.

The twelve contestants vying for the USA title, competed in Casual Wear, Beach Wear, Formal Wear and Talent while the top five finalists were also judged in an on-stage question and answer session.

The pageant took place at the Celebrity Centre International in Hollywood and was hosted by Glenn J. Paigemon and Marianne Fritz. Celebrity judges included Golden Globe nominee and acting coach John Sarno, star of “General Hospital” Sonya Eddy, radio personality/host of The Steve Harvey Show 93.5 KDAY Nautica de la Cruz, actor Renzo Lewis (“Elf Academy” and “Little Bruno”) and the owner and executive director of the Miss California USA and Miss California Teen USA pageants, as well as owner of The Morgan Talent Agency, Keith Lewis.

It’s a common story in Hollywood: the difficulties a performer faces in establishing himself in his chosen career. The lucky few, however, defy these daunting odds to carve out a name for themselves in entertainment. An even smaller selection of artists successfully branch out to other pursuits. Gary Sturgis, in-demand actor and voice-over talent, is part of this elite group. In addition to appearing in movies (Tyler Perry’s Diary of a Mad Black Woman and Daddy’s Little Girls) and on television shows (The District, NYPD Blue, Malcolm & Eddie, and Port Charles), Gary’s distinctive voice was adopted by UPN in its on-air promotions, and he lent his golden tones to numerous commercials, video games, and cartoons. Gary may very well be one of the voices you hear every day, without even realizing it.

He credits his upbringing in New Orleans for providing the values and culture that have motivated him to keep moving. As befits a native of the Crescent City, Gary first caught the entertainment bug not in acting, but in music. After playing for a couple of years with the school band, he advanced to the position of drum major, thus marking one of his first public displays of leadership. It was a sign of things to come.

High school marked another important discovery for Gary: He began acting and, in the process, found his path in the world. His hometown provided opportunities for Gary to get his start, with appearances in films such as The Big Easy and Blaze, but it was in Los Angeles where his career gained steam. In addition to getting cast for TV series, he could be seen in commercials for Mountain Dew alongside rapper Busta Rhymes, as well as spots both on the air and in print for Dodge Neon.

Gary’s already burgeoning portfolio blew up when he branched out into voice-over work. On top of his work for UPN, he lent his sonorous tones to ads for feature films such as The Others, Torque, Bones, The Brother, The Wood, Blue Streak, and Crossroads (starring Britney Spears). Gary’s golden vocals have found another avenue as well; he’s given voice to cartoon characters such as the Phantom Virus in Scooby Doo and the Cyberchase and Ebon in Static Shock. Video game makers came calling too, casting Gary in True Crime New York City and Shout About Music.

The silver screen beckoned, and Gary responded. Tyler Perry has featured Gary in two of his features, including the smash hit Diary of a Mad Black Woman, in the role of the villainous Jamison, and Daddy’s Little Girls, as Joe Woods, the local drug dealer. Gary has also acted opposite Terrence Howard in Lion’s Gate Pride, in which he played another baddie. Gary has also turned his artistic sights behind the scenes, exercising his screenwriting muscles. He’s penned several feature-length scripts, covering comedy, drama, and the emotions in between; his works are currently being shopped around.

In 2005, Gary’s career came full circle, as he returned to his musical roots to release his debut CD Fahrenheit under his rap name Illuminati. While building GEMSound Recording studio and putting down some rap tracks, he met producer and fellow neo-soul artist Simfani. Together, the duo created Predator Records, which aims to bring film practices to the music industry and to take care of the artists on their label.

There’s more to Gary’s career than entertaining the masses, however. As a busy voice actor, he’s breaking the mold of traditional vocal talent as part of a new wave representing women and minorities. His undeniable success serves as proof of mainstream audiences’ acceptance and appetite for different voices. He also teaches classes in the art of voice-over for those hoping to follow in his footsteps.

Actor, musician, writer, teacher, entrepreneur: Gary Sturgis has succeeded in all of these pursuits. Whether he’s lighting up the big screen, giving voice to words or characters on a page, creating his own stories, or dreaming up another avenue to express his creative urges, Gary has followed his muse to great acclaim. Whichever hat Gary is wearing, only one question remains: Where will he show up next?

Gary Sturgis

The Ford Amphitheatre in Hollywood will be home to “An Evening of Independence: A Celebration of Singers, Songwriters and Music” on August 26th. Organized by Koffeehouse Music Productions, this charity event, featuring up and coming indie artists, many of whom were found on MySpace, will benefit the Guitar Center Music Foundation.

The all-ages festival will begin at 5:30 p.m. when patrons are encouraged to picnic on the grounds of the outdoor amphitheater until 7:00 p.m. while listening to John West, Sabrina Taylor, Trevor Davis and Justin Hopkins. The music will continue at 7:30 p.m. on the main stage with Trevor Hall, Mandi Perkins, Amanda Dumas, Shawn Pander, Venice Maki and Shawn Hlookoff.

General admission tickets will become available on August 10th for $20 as well as a limited number of VIP seats for $75 at www.fordtheatres.org or by calling the Ford Box Office at 323.461.3673.
“The online music communities, including MySpace, boast an extraordinary talent pool,” said Koffeehouse founder Jeremy Koff. “Our events create a platform for these artists to be heard in the real world. While online peer-to-peer and social networks have transformed the music industry, there is no substitute for the live music experience, which is the only way for the audience to truly absorb the spirit of a musician.”

All of the net proceeds from the event will benefit The Guitar Center Music Foundation (www.guitarcentermusicfoundation.org), which provides funding and resources for music programs across America so that kids and adults alike will have an opportunity to experience the joys of music.

About Koffeehouse Music Productions, LLC: Koffeehouse is the brainchild of Jeremy Koff, a cellist and the son and nephew of two of the founding members of the world renowned Juilliard String Quartet. Koff’s familial passion for music translated into the Koffeehouse, which supports up-and-coming singer songwriters by providing artists with intimate performance spaces and bringing together musicians, industry executives, and passionate listeners since 2004. Koff is also a member of the advisory board of The Guitar Center Music Foundation, along with such luminaries as Carlos Santana and Mick Fleetwood, and industry moguls such as the CEOs of Taylor Guitars, Fender, Gibson and Roland. In 2006, Koffeehouse was recognized with the 2006 Community Service Award from the Los Angeles Music Awards. www.koffeehouse.com

They believe that music participation is an essential element in the fabric of an enduring society. Their mission is to have the benefits of making music available to everyone in the communities in which they serve, to promote its importance through education and media initiatives, and to provide financial and in-kind resources in collaboration with other organizations to achieve their common goal.

by Helen Ryan?

You exercise sporadically. You eat about the same as you always have. Then one day you can?t button your pants. What gives?

Hormonal changes and loss of lean body mass (muscle) contribute to this waist creep the expansion of our waistlines we tend to experience as we approach, and pass, our 40s.

On average, women lose five pounds of muscle per decade after 18 years of age. If we? continue to eat as we did when we were younger, the issue of calories in versus calories out comes strongly into play. But keeping the creep at bay is easier than you think.

BLAST THE FAT

We know it. We?ve heard it. We?ve read it. But we are so busy with our careers, our lives and our families that we don?t want to admit it. There is no ?magic pill? for losing weight and staying, or getting, into good physical shape. The bottom line is we have to eat healthy?.and sweat more.

Food: Simply put, we need to eat a variety of fruits and vegetables; consume whole grains and high-fiber foods; limit saturated and trans fats; cut down on sugars and simple carbohydrates; and limit alcohol. Controlling portion sizes is key, too. Don?t deprive yourself of what you want. Eat healthy?most of the time. And indulge?a little. It?s all about balance.

Exercise: 30 minutes most days of the week is recommended for general health. But to keep our lean mass up and our body fat percentage down we need to add just a little more effort.

Fidget

?According to Len Kravitz, M.A., Ph.D., program coordinator of exercise science and a researcher at the University of New Mexico, people who fidget burn an additional 352 calories per day than people who do not fidget. Those extra 352 calories can add up to a yearly net loss of about 36 pounds!?? So fidget, take the stairs, park farther away, pace while talking on the phone, walk to a colleague?s desk, conduct meetings standing up or walking around, dance, exercise while watching TV, make housework brisk, walk the kids to school, garden?be as ?inefficient? as possible, making as many trips and taking as many steps as you can.

Structured exercise

??BREAK IT UP

Rise 20 minutes earlier to fit in some strength training and core work. Then break up your 30 minute ?most days of the week? cardio into 10- or 15-minute increments throughout the day, or however it fits into your life. Your goal is to reach 200-300 minutes of cardiovascular exercise per week. Write down how much you exercised each day in a cheap calendar, then total the week. Keep adding to it until you?ve reached your 300 minutes?and exercise has become a way of life.

??GET THE COMBO

Use large muscle groups. Combine movements. Pushups work wonders for the upper body. Or try a stability ball ?wall squat? with bicep curl. Use as many muscles as possible within each exercise. Now?s the time to be creative.

??CRANK THE INTENSITY

Less time means higher intensity. Work each muscle until fatigue with a weight you can lift at least eight times but no more than 15. Experiment with a circuit. Add intervals to some of your cardio.

??BURST FORTH
Between exercises, add a jump, a jack or a shuffle. Not only does this raise your heart rate and increase total calorie burn, but it also adds bone-protecting impact to your workouts.

??SWITCH IT
Our bodies need variety to see results, and as we grow older we are more susceptible to overuse injuries. So protect your joints and muscles, and challenge your body, by shaking things up.

By Katie Barnes

Unless your last name is Kidman, Crowe or you were cast in recent television hit shows House or Lost, it is rare to hear the Australian accent boomerang through the acting business of LA.

Yet booming from the stage of Springboard Theater’s production of Beautiful Souls is an Aussie story of human consequences that emerge from attempting to smuggle drugs while backpacking in Thailand.

Based on true events in 2003 that made national headlines Down Under, it is a bleak reality that execution often awaits those who are accused or convicted of such a serious crime in a non-western country.

Written as a one-act by Sven Swenson, three fellow travelers find themselves thrown into a Thai jail with nothing but prison walls between them. In lieu of death-by-hanging or a miraculous release to freedom, each realizes the mental and emotional barriers that have blocked their way toward true human interaction, love and intimate disclosure.

That these interpersonal ideas may have sealed their fates long before their physical arrests is a deeply sad and tragic revelation about the ironic and intricate nature of our inner lives- how often we are unwilling to open to each other in love and human spirit until we are about to lose ourselves and our loved ones for eternity.

The production is supported by ANIDA (Australian National Institute of Dramatic Art) and stars Australian drama school graduates Luke Wright and Emma Dean. The third role is played by rising young American actor, Jake Robards, who deserves special mention for his ability to produce an almost flawless “down under” drawl.

The cast is young, talented and believable in their roles and it would be interesting to see the production develop given the chance to play an extended run while at the Hudson Mainstage, one of Hollywood’s better known and most successful small theaters on Theater Row.

With set design and lighting serving to further isolate the characters from themselves and yet unite them in their plight with the audience, the final moments were a chilling indictment on the harsh terms laid out for detainees involved in such a case.

But the provocative use of a sweet yet haunting singsong melody was the note that confirmed the production’s tug at one’s heart, leaving solemn and bewildering questions as to how three young people had made decisions while vacationing, that ultimately cost them their lives.

This event is not only the country’s largest ticketed beer festival, it’s also the marquee competition for commercial beer brewers.

Ask anyone who’s picked up a pint of beer in the last decade, and they’ll tell you how far the industry has come. The nation’s imbibers no longer have to settle for mass-market brews; they can take their pick of 1,400 craft brewers creating artisanal beers for a variety of tastes. Many of these specialty brewers can be found at the Great American Beer Festival; just last year, the festival counted 384 breweries serving and more than 1,650 beers for sampling by the public. The competition itself included 450 breweries, who presented 2,410 beers in 69 categories for judging by 103 judges from 9 countries.

Last year, 41,000 attendees - breaking 2005’s total by 28 percent - came together at the Great American Beer Festival to enjoy the largest selection of U.S. beers ever collected in one place.

The same growth enjoyed by the Great American Beer Festival can be seen in the marketplace. Sales of craft beer continue to expand – 2006 saw a 17.8 percent increase, and the brews have enjoyed a 31.5 percent upshot in the last three years - even as large domestic brewers have to deal with stagnant numbers. American beers are now among the best in the world, and many of those leaders can be found at this get-together in Denver.

This year, the Great American Beer Festival will update its practices by adopting "green" policies carried out in conjunction with the Denver Convention Center, where the event is taking place. The bottles, glasses, programs, and other products used in the festival will be recycled, greatly decreasing the waste stream from the gathering. Festival organizers are also encouraging and promoting the use of public transportation to reach the event, thus reducing the fest’s carbon footprint.
Great American Beer Festival
October 11-13, 2007
Colorado Convention Center
Denver, Colorado

The Ojai Playwrights Conference, held just north of Los Angeles, commemorates its 10th year of presenting new plays by continuing to spotlight the country’s most promising literary talents with public readings and performances. For its 10th anniversary, the Ojai Playwrights Conference will host favorite returning playwrights, as well as introduce rising new artists of American theater.

Over the years, the Ojai Playwrights Conference has featured the work of playwrights such as Lee Blessing, Stephen Belber, Jon Robin Baitz, Keith Bunin, Linda Hunt, Danai Gurira, Danny Hoch, Luis Alfaro, Nikole Salter, Julia Cho, Susan Miller, Charlayne Woodard and more, who have been drawn to the welcoming atmosphere in which they can throw themselves into intensive, in-residence work. These productions, in turn, have attracted the acting talents of Lily Tomlin, David Hyde Pierce, Matthew Perry, Minnie Driver, Michael Gross, Sanaa Lathan, Judith Light, Allison Janney, William H. Macy, Felicity Huffman, Sandra Oh, Mary McCormack, Dana Delaney, Brooke Adams, Sharon Lawrence, Tony Shalhoub, Brian Cox, and many more. This small-town community, sheltered from the hustle and bustle of the world’s entertainment capital, has proven to be an incubator for creative freedom, experimentation, and process.

In addition, prominent guest panelists will take part in public symposia addressing "topics that will enrich the cultural and artistic life" of residents of Ojai and Southern California, in general. Meanwhile, young playwrights can join the Youth Writers/Performance Lab for guiding words from adult theater professionals; Kim Maxwell will direct the Lab, joined by director/playwright/dramaturge Keith Bunin and actor/playwright/director Steve Connell. Other directors taking part in this year’s conference include Michael Garces, Lisa Petersen, Diane Rodriguez, Kent Nicholson, and Robert Egan, as well as Keith Bunin away from his Lab duties. Keith also joins Chris Breyer as a dramaturge. Nicole Arbusto and Joy Dickson are still selecting casts, and more names will be released once the rosters are complete.

The schedule includes:

Tuesday, August 7, 2007 at 7:30 p.m. Symposium A: "Love in the Time of Dystopia." Playwrights Julia Cho, Steve Connell, and T.D. Mitchell humorously explore modern-day loving relationships. Following this collection of one-acts, scenes, monologues, and poems, the writers will hold a discussion.
Thursday, August 9, 2007 at 7:30 p.m. Symposium B: "My Pal George." Rick Cleveland, the conference’s co-founder and a writer for the hit TV series "Six Feet Under" and "The West Wing," puts on his one-man show detailing the relationship between President George W. Bush and himself. Rick’s previous play, "My Buddy Bill," addressing his special ties with Bill and Hillary Clinton garnered awards at the HBO Aspen Comedy Festival. Rick will be available for discussion after the performance.
Friday, August 10 at 7 p.m.: "The Night Watchman (Through The Fire)." In her new solo play, writer-performer Charlayne Woodard present the struggles faced by young people trying to find their footing in a media-saturated environment.

Friday, August 10 at 9:00 p.m.: "The Lawn." This Cody Henderson-penned play runs roughshod over 1950s suburban America, as we follow the character of Donald Peterson in his quest to fit in. The cast includes Patrick Adams, Blythe Auffarth, John Cabrera, Shannon Holt, Ravi Kapoor, Jim Lashley, John Vickery and Liza Weil.

Saturday, August 11 at 1 p.m.: A performance by the Youth Writers/Performance Workshop.

Saturday, August 11 at 4 p.m.: "The Bog Lacuna." Writer Ben Rosenthal combines humor, satire, and humanity and takes us to the heartland for a story about a cult that commits a heinous crime and the community’s responsibility for their acts. The cast comprises John Cabrera ("The Gilmore Girls") Blythe Auffarth, Sam McMurray ("The King of Queens"), Shannon Holt, Jim Lashley, Matt Glave ("Stargate SG-1") and Jim Anzide.

Saturday, August 11 at 8 p.m.: "Surf Report." Meet Judith and Bruce, a storybook couple in a coastal community steeped in both capitalism and environmentalism. But these two aren’t spouses — Bruce is Judith’s longtime boss. Writer Annie Weisman, who has also authored "Be Aggressive" and the TV series "Dead Like Me" and "Heartland," casts her comical outlook on the office marriage and its repercussions outside of the workplace. Cast will include Mary Catherine Garrison, John Vickery ("Star Trek: Deep Space Nine"), Linda Gehringer (many shows at South Coast Repertory), Dwier Brown ("ER"), Liza Weil ("The Gilmore Girls").

Sunday, August 12 at 1 p.m.: "American Hwangap." From the pen of Lloyd Suh (author of "The Children of Vonderly" and "Masha No Home") comes Min Suk Chun, a 60-year-old Korean would-be cowboy returning home to West Texas for a family reunion and a major birthday ritual. The cast will include Samantha Quan of ABC Family Channel’s series "Three Moons Over Milford," Greg Watanabe of the series "Watch Over Me," Kim Miyori ("St. Elsewhere"), Dana Lee ("Nancy Drew"), and Ramon de Ocampo ("Medium," "The West Wing").

Sunday, August 12 at 4 p.m.: "Equivocation." The author of "Stand-Up Tragedy" and a Peabody Award winner for TV’s "Nothing Sacred," Bill Cain puts us in William Shakespeare’s shoes as he and his famous theater company wrestle with a commission to chronicle a national tragedy, only with the government’s approved facts in place. In addition to his looks, a charming personality, brilliant talent and solid acting experience in commercials, theater and television, William takes his curiosity about life to the limits. He is actively involved in environmental non-profit organizations and aspiring to become a dedicated, young spokesperson for a significant cause.

Just beginning his teenage years, William is already a seasoned actor. He started in commercials at the age of five. Now, after all forms of acting, from commercials to films, William is stepping it up. He is featured in the short film Entropy, a national Subway commercial and starring in the hit PBS KIDS GO! TV series FETCH! with Ruff Ruffman. The new season aired this past May, with a new cast, new challenges, and a new animated feline character.

“Participating in the kid’s TV show FETCH! was one of the best experiences I have ever had. I now see the true meaning of teamwork and found out that learning can be very fun!” says William. When asked about what he plans to do next, William shares, “I would love to do more TV shows. I really hope to work with Disney someday."

In addition to his new television and commercial ventures, Erickson’s most recent film includes a short by director Nathan Ehrlich entitled, “Entropy.” Erickson was cast as the lead, young Daniel. The film is a comedy short that follows young Daniel after the death of his mother as he is pushed together with his quirky father and left to fend for himself.

William’s list of other independent films include “Courage”, directed by Santa Sierra, “Bus Stop”, directed by Pamela Preston, “Magic Rock” by Brad Gallo, “Click” directed by Scotty Dugan and “The Playground” directed by Peter Pizzi. “As much as I enjoy TV, I do enjoy film, too,” William says, “It gives me a chance to express different characters, and sometimes create a special angle my director hasn’t thought of. It is fun to act as a team.”
Learn more about William Erickson at: www.williamerickson.info

Hollywood loves stories of the tortured artist. From the dawn of cinema this format has provided some of Hollywood’s best movies. Recently, a spate of musician-inspired films has graced the screen with spectacular results. The award-winning Ray and the critically inspired La Vie En Rose have beautifully captured the flawed musician struggling with their tremendous talent. Add El Cantante to this august list. With the flawed but incredibly talented musician Hector Lavoe at it’s heart, El Cantante takes the audience on a wonderful emotional roller coaster ride with a pulsating Salsa beat.

The movie starts with a young Hector Lavoe (Mark Anthony) as an aimless young man leaving his native Puerto Rico for the dream of America. Through the intersection of luck and happenstance, Hector lands in New York and becomes the lead singer of the Willie Colon’s band – a prominent Salsa band. At the same time, The Puerto Rico Pride Movement starts to take off in New York and spreads to other cities. Serendipity smiles on Hector as the Pride movement claims Salsa music as their own.

All of a sudden musicians like Hector achieve superstardom. Flushed with cash but emotionally immature, Hector wallows in the Latino version of the evil trinity – Sex, Drugs, and Salsa music. The one constant through Hector’s self destruction, his flawed wife Puchi (Jennifer Lopez) who proves the adage "Love in not enough." Sometimes encouraging but often enabling, Puchi stands by Hector as he slides into self-destruction. Sadly, Hector’s fame lets him escape responsibility until it is too late. For example after Hector’s bad behavior gets him kicked out of Willie Colon’s band, his magnificent voice makes him a huge solo sensation leading to even more fame further fueling his self destruction. This film demonstrates the fleeting nature of happiness. Even when some people have everything they could ever want, they manage to live sad, lonely lives.

Mark Anthony is perfectly cast as Hector Lavoe. The physical resemblance between Anthony and Lavoe is eerie. Give him fifteen pounds; Anthony could be Lavoe’s twin. More importantly, Anthony captures the spirit of Lavoe. Playing Lavoe as a hapless innocent swallowed whole by fame, Anthony mesmerizes the audience. Jennifer Lopez wonderfully compliments Anthony as the tough street-smart New Rican Puchi. The real life chemistry between Anthony and Lopez spills onto the screen much to the delight of the audience. Although the acting is great, the great Salsa steals the show. In fact, the whole movie is shot in a musical style. Even in the quiet moments, there is movement. Great Salsa songs and performances pepper the movie. With powerful themes, strong acting, and great Salsa, El Cantante is definitely a movie worth seeing.

The California weather so well-known for its beautiful sunshine and cool breezes surpassed expectations this past Sunday and did not disappoint the hundreds of people who journeyed from all over the U.S. to attend the 2nd Annual LA Stars Celebrity and NBA All-Star Basketball Games, as well as the adjoining LA Stars inaugural “Carnival for the Community”, both hosted by Baron Davis and Paul Pierce. Excitement was in the air as people, young and old alike, eagerly watched the Hood Games, an urban extreme sport competition held at the carnival on the illustrious USC campus. Attendees at the carnival were also delighted to see professional athletes and celebrities such as Nick Cannon, Donald Faison, and Jackie Long participate in various carnival booths and interactive presentations such as break dancing, cardio, Double Dutch and food showcases that demonstrated unique and creative ways to live a healthy lifestyle and stick to a nutritious meal-plan.

The Celebrity and NBA All-Star Basketball game held in the USC Galen Center, was even more earnestly sought out than the carnival, and actually turned out to be an un-anticipated indulgence of two equally entertaining games. The first game was an all Celebrity game composed of blue and white colored oppositional teams comprised of both musicians and actors. The “Blue Team” included easily recognizable stars such as Snoop Dogg, Bill Bellamy, Ray J, Allison Sweeney, Donald Faison, and Brian White. The “White Team” included Flex Alexander, Brandon Routh, Jackie Long and many more. The score was tied for most of the game until the end of the 3rd quarter when the “White Team” began to take the lead. The “Blue Team” put in an outstanding effort to increase the growing distance between the two scores but with players such as Snoop and Donald Faison continuously shooting two’s and three’s, the “White Team” was able to unmercifully crush the opposition, winning the game with a score of 85 to 75.

Amazingly enough, the celebrity line-up didn’t stop there. Countless other celebrities such as Brandy, Tichina Arnold, Master P, Lil’ Romeo, and Tia Mowry were on hand to simply show support for the LA Stars, sign autographs, and enjoy the game. Onye Ibekwe of the San Francisco 49ers was yet another famous athletic face to grace the game. Ibekwe was there to promote another big charity event, “The HoopLove2k 1st Annual Day Camp”, taking place on August 18th at Carson High School in Carson, whose “main goal is to help raise the confidence of children partnered with basketball instruction”.

Although the Celebrity game was wildly entertaining, it was only the icing on the cake in comparison to the NBA All-Star game. Professional players from the NBA who currently played for or originally called Los Angeles their home made up the “LA Stars Team”. Players from various other cities across the United States were designated to the “NBA Stars Team”. The “LA Stars” included players such as Arron Afflalo of the Detroit Pistons, Jordan Farmar of the Los Angeles Lakers, Baron Davis of the Golden State Warriors, Ryan Hollins of the Charlotte Bobcats, and Gabe Pruitt of the Boston Celtics. Conversely, the “NBA Stars” had names such as Ricky Davis of the Minnesota Timberwolves, Jason Kidd of the New Jersey Nets, Paul Pierce of the Boston Celtics, Nick Young of the Washington Wizards, Tyson Chandler of the New Orleans Hornets, and Deron Williams of the Utah Jazz.

The athletes played an incredible game full of uncountable dunks and impressive plays run by teammates who remained smiling the entire game. It was basketball at its best and spectators were able to witness the competitors simply playing their heart out for the sheer fun of it with no hindrances resulting from stress over the outcome of the game. It was clearly evident that the players were glad to be there for a good cause and to play with other professionals in the League that they normally didn’t have the opportunity to play on the same team with. It was a close game, but as in the game before the “LA Stars” were able to triumph over the “NBA Stars” with a lead of ten points, resulting in a score of 140 to 130.

The Sunday events were the grand finale to the LA Stars Charity Weekend, preceded by “The Legacy Project” at Richardson Park on Friday August 3rd and the “LA Stars on Rodeo Experience” on the 200 block of Rodeo Drive on Saturday. Originally, legendary NBA player, Earvin “Magic” Johnson held A Midsummer Night’s Magic for the city of Los Angeles, which was the beginning of the LA Stars legacy. Magic Johnson kept the program going for twenty years before passing the responsibility of the charitable event group over to Paul Pierce and Baron Davis, who took oaths to continue the dedication of raising funds to improve the communities, quality of living, and increased opportunities for under-privileged youth and their families living in the Los Angeles area and surrounding communities. The LA Stars “Carnival for the Community” and the proceeding “Celebrity and NBA All-Star Basketball Games” were without a doubt, a complete success and guaranteed pursuance of the continued mission of LA Stars to give back to Los Angeles youth.

Lisa Temple has serious issues with her mother. In order to work through her past and finally forgive the woman who gave her life, Lisa, with the help of her husband, has put together a one-woman show detailing the pain of her formative years. My Mother’s Yard is one woman’s attempt to gain closure on her past, thereby allowing herself to forgive and move on.

Expecting the set, as the title suggests, to be in her mother’s yard, it is instead laid out in a sporting goods store. As this hour long show begins, Lisa emerges from inside a tent to greet the audience explaining that she and her husband once had to camp out on her mother’s Midwestern lawn because the house was too cluttered. To further bring home her mother’s eccentricities, the audience is informed of the 22 vehicles that are parked in her mother’s yard, most of which are broken down.

As the stage is decorated with typical items found in a sporting goods store, Lisa uses these props to help guide her through her emotional story. Picking up a bag of beef jerky, Lisa recalls how her mother would only make dishes with meat after repeatedly being told Lisa and her husband were vegetarians. Holding a pair of tennis balls, Lisa recounts how her mother constantly chastised her lack of a full figured chest.

Receiving repeated criticism and disapproval from her mother regarding her looks, pursuits and life choices, Lisa built up a lot of resentment towards the woman who clearly preferred her two sons over her only daughter, even though neither man seemed to deserve it.

The idea for My Mother’s Yard began five years ago when Lisa’s husband, Rich Brunner began to write down the things she would randomly tell him about her past. Resulting in a series of monologues, which clearly emphasized Lisa’s strained relationship with her mother, the idea for the show was formed. But as she read the memoir Rich had created, Lisa found it was too much to handle and they put the piece away for two years.

When she felt ready to confront her ghosts, the couple brought her story out from hiding and prepared to create Lisa’s one-woman show. Using it as a form of catharsis, Lisa has boldly been able to work through her pain and forgive her mother for the years of rejection in front of a live audience.

Even though this was a trying experience for her, as evidenced by the real tears and raw emotion Lisa displays on stage, having someone else write the script (her husband) and direct her (Jan O’Connor) helped to somewhat remove her from the situation, allowing her to focus on her performance rather than her emotional wounds. A performance, which in the small space of the theatre can at times be uncomfortable, as it’s if the audience is caught between a very heated, very real confrontation between Lisa and her mother.

Ranging from the humorous to the emotional, Lisa’s stories reflect the rejection and hurt she internalized from her mother’s actions and words. Becoming a successful actress (she has appeared on TV shows Boston Public, Profiler, Arrest & Trial and in the movie Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer) with a happy marriage, Lisa has been able to overcome her experiences in Kansas, let go of the past and forgive the source of her life long angst.

Running through August 25th, My Mother’s Yard can be seen every Friday and Saturday at the Actors Group Theatre at 4378 Lankershim Blvd in North Hollywood.
