The Studio

When YogaCo founders Kelsey and Grant searched for a place to build their vision, they discovered a neglected 7,000 square foot interior amid the action on the 3rd Street Promenade. Leave it to two yoga enthusiasts to see the hidden potential beneath the surface of a place that had been dormant for 25 years. Kelsey and Grant rolled up their sleeves and went to work on stretching the space as though it were the body of a Yoga master, carving out three lounges, a Teachers’ Lounge, two Yoga rooms, stores and bathrooms. A third Yoga room is in development. The studio also features a stunning lobby and relaxing courtyard.

The interplay of bold neutrals against the backdrop of pristine, white walls is revealed by low lighting that illuminates without intruding. Bamboo palm plants are placed throughout the studio to complement the ambience and the environmentally friendly bamboo is used in constructing many of the studio’s elements, including the flooring, shoe cubbies and benches. A deliberate use of elegant artwork and portraits adorn the walls. Select walls within the studio also showcase grand and classic lettering that express messages like “Breathe” and “Namaste”.

The Environment

YogaCo transcends the atmosphere of other yoga locations by promoting a wholly Green environment in their studio. The aforementioned bamboo is a renewable resource. For water conservation, YogaCo conserves up to 40,000 gallons of water a year via waterless urinals and low-flow toilets. Quadruple-paned windows work to mitigate the loss of heat and air for maximum energy efficiency. Hepa-filters are used in the studio and filter 100% of existing air 2 to 5 times per hour while oxygen-producing plants removed harmful elements like Benzene, Formaldehyde and TCE.

 The champion plants in removing benzene used in the studio are: ivy, gerbera daisies, pot mums, peace lily, bamboo palm, and Mother-in-law’s Tongue. Chinese Evergreens and pot mums extract benzene coming from detergents, while Dracaena extracts it from ink, dyes, tobacco smoke and rubber. Ivy extracted easily the toxins coming from petroleum products, while benzene from plastics was rapidly sucked up by Gerbera daisy.

While this allows YogaCo’s visitors to feel good about practicing in an environmentally responsible studio, these green enhancements also elevate the quality of the workouts themselves. For example, the filtering out of Formaldehyde cleanses the air breathed by all as the chemical is an irritant of the eyes, nose, and throat. Formaldehyde causes dermatitis and headaches, is a common cause of asthma and has been connected to throat cancer.

LA’s The Place:  What made you decide to open a medspa?
 
Ande Akinrele:  I see women and men everyday wearing the signs of stress on their faces and body. We live such stressful lives these days without enough time for exercise and the relaxation needed to rejuvenate from day to day. Over time, we look worn down and I wanted to create a safe, harmonious place where people can come to renew themselves both physically and spiritually. It is important to me, to only use the latest, scientifically proven technology, such as state of the art lasers and other new technology like mesoporation, which uses an electrical current to infuse age defying products such as collagen and vitamins into the skin, without needles, pain or surgery! Much of this technology has been around in Europe for years and is finally being adopted here in the US. I am so happy to be in an industry that helps people look good and feel good. Many of my clients spent their earlier years baking in the sun with oils and tin foil because that was what was done back then! Now we are able to help reverse the wrinkles and sun spots caused by all those years of sun damage and help people feel better about themselves. Most people in their 40s and 50s (even some in their 30s) admit they feel much younger inside than they look. Our role is to help bring back that balance between how a person looks and how they feel.

LATP:  What is your background?
 
AA:  I have been around spas, salons and the beauty industry my entire life. I have dabbled in many industries but always find myself back in the health and beauty arena which is where my true passion lies. I grew up in Belgium and England, around many health and wellness spas where many of these types of procedures are done. I love skin care! When you think about it, the skin is the largest organ in the body and is most reflective of the lifestyle you live. Habitual stress, poor nutrition, smoking, insomnia or late nights are all evident when you examine your skin. I have a Masters degree in business information systems which has helped me with the practical side of business management. I also spent over 15 years with health maintenance organizations giving me a solid understanding of regulatory healthcare compliance and practice management. Health, beauty and wellness is a lifelong passion I have chosen to devote my life to.

LATP:  How did you determine which treatments were best to offer?
 
AA:  Safety and exceptional results have always been my highest priority. I spent many years researching the latest technology and products available, studying clinical trials and working with the best physicians, medical aestheticians and medical spa consultants available. Our lasers, equipment and products have gone through rigorous testing and are FDA approved. Our treatments come from all over the world and are developed specifically for restoration and self-improvement. We focus mainly on restoring youthful skin and contouring the body to help regain youthfulness. We are also developing new self help programs for a more holistic approach to health and beauty.

LATP:  What is your ‘mission statement’?
 
AA:  i Medspa was founded on a commitment to help our clients look and feel their best. We take a comprehensive approach to skin care recognizing that each client has unique needs for preservation, reparation, maintenance and enhancement of their skin. The name ‘i’ reminds us to give each individual client the focus and attention they deserve. LATP:  You designed it so beautifully; do you have a design background too?!
 
AA:  Actually, yes! I studied interior design at UCLA – another one of my passions! The interior design was a collaboration between Q design, Interkinetics Architects and myself. I guess I am drawn to creating beauty, whether for the face, body or space/environment. When the things around us are beautiful, we feel harmonious and peaceful. I think beauty comes in all forms, shapes, sizes and colors and we need to tap into it and make the most of what we have for as long as we can have it! God created so much beauty in the world and we are all entitled to it and deserve to receive it.
 
LATP:  What is your most popular treatment for the summer?

Q&A with Marco Pelusi

Q: Why is it when I had my hair colored at other well known LA salons, I walked out with dried out straw hair, and when you color it, it’s silky smooth? Are you using special dyes?

MP:  My mantra has, is, and always will be to color-treat the hair while maintaining the quality and integrity of the hair. My background literally was growing up while working inside my family’s chain of salons on the east coast, and also working inside the labs at a luxury hair color manufacturer called Framesi. I literally formed my hair education based on the knowledge and understanding of how to create and work with hair color at Framesi to maintain the shine and condition of the hair – and became a color trainer. I use top quality, low ammonia, and maximum conditioning hair color on my clients. Usually once you’re in my chair for color, your hair feels better than it did before. This feeling is because I only apply the minimal amount of ammonia and other chemicals specifically needed to achieve the color you desire. Less is more with chemicals. More rich pigment and condition, less ammonia and peroxide. Hair color can be nestled in a conditioning base which I do. Joico in LA then took me onboard years ago as their international color instructor, and I once again had the opportunity to create healthy, shiny hair color products. I love taking extra special care of the hair while coloring it. I also am the only one to actually add collagen to hair color formulas, making it something that cannot be achieved anywhere else, except right here at my studio.

Q: As a guy, I’ve had my hair colored at top salons and it looks fake or too dark. Why is it when you do it, it looks so natural?

M: Well first off, I have spent most of my life training hairdressers to perform natural-looking hair color. My life to this day still involves creating a color technique, taking it on the road, and teaching it! I prefer to color men’s’ hair to make it appear as it could have been the color he had as a kid. To do this work, I respect skin tone, eye color, hairstyle, appearance, lifestyle, everything. This awareness allows me to select just the right shade that will look appropriate right next to a gentleman’s skin. Then, when I apply a guy’s color, generally I may only apply it partially, allowing some of the gray hair to still show through in certain areas. This personalized application makes a guy’s hair look more natural. There’s nothing worse than when a guy’s color is so obvious it looks like shoe polish! My goal for a man’s hair color is to reduce the amount of gray, to make it look like it did ten years prior; or, simply to make his color look similar to when he was a young kid.

Q: I love my dark hair (it is natural) but I have read that after you’re over a certain age its best to lighten up the color. Is this true with everyone? Thanks so much!

A: As a colorist, yes, generally speaking, I do believe that as we get older, we shouldn’t be AS dark with our hair color as we once were.  The reason for this is: as we age, we lose pigment in our skin and our hair, so the very dark hair no longer looks as good as it once did next to our skin.  A woman or man in her/his early 30s can probably pull off the same level of darkness in the hair as she/he had in her/his 20s.  But once he/she gets into the later 30s, and most definitely into the mid to late 40s, he/she needs to lighten it up a bit.  I’m not suggesting for you to become blonde!  I’m merely suggesting that slowly, gradually, you should aim to lighten your hair, over the years, at least by a few shades.  If you have a very dark, rich brunette color, begin by adding a few caramel highlights.  If you like them, gradually add more.  Eventually, ask your stylist to slowly lighten your base color by a few shades, to catch up with the highlights.  This lightening can be natural looking, if done in harmony with the highlighting.  During this transformation, and with all hair color, make sure to use color-safe shampoo, conditioner and styling products on your hair.

LA’s The Place:  So you are a respected plastic surgeon and suddenly you find yourself on an Emmy-nominated syndicated series. How do you feel about your show’s success?

Dr. Andrew Ordon:  This experience has made me grateful and proud. I’m grateful for the opportunity and proud with what our team has done with it. I’m proud of my fellow doctor-hosts to our producers, technical staff and even the audience and guests.  Everyone has come together to create a never-seen before phenomenon in informational television. What we love best is that it is a viewer-driven show. It’s all about giving our viewers the useful information they need.

LATP:   How did you get the co-hosting Position on “The Doctors”?

Dr. O:  I had become friends with Dr. Phil McGraw through our kids attending the same school. I became a resource for his television show, “The Dr. Phil Show”. He then turned to me when he and his son, producer Jay McGraw created “The Doctors”. I had what they were looking for: an experienced Beverly Hills plastic surgeon with a history of television appearances and vast surgical experience. I must humbly add that I was in the right place at the right time. But the kicker was the chemistry between us four hosts. Travis, Jim and Lisa are all great people. I will always be friends with them-show or no show.

LATP:  We understand you have a wonderful family: a beautiful wife with a flair for interior design, a son who recently graduated from college and a daughter who is finishing her college years. How does your family feel about Dad’s new- found celebrity?

Dr. O:  Robyn, my wife has been totally supportive and doesn’t allow any of this to go to my head. We may be the happiest couple in Hollywood. Like most fathers, what I am most proud of are my two children. My son and daughter attend college back east and make me proud each and every day. I don’t think anyone is ever a celebrity in their own home. I certainly am not. My family life has not changed one iota. My kids still don’t listen to me! They often laugh at my expense. 

LATP:  You and your co-hosts seem to have great chemistry and you all seem to get along very well. What is it like working with three very qualified doctors with very different personalities?

Dr. O:  Lisa, Jim and Travis are the best! We do get along very well, indeed. The energy that flows back and forth between us is electric. We don’t go up there with a script, by the way. What you see on The Doctors is an honest, open and completely genuine repartee between three doctors who are friends. At the same time, we are different in age, background and training. We aren’t afraid to disagree with one another, which only makes the show better. We keep our egos in check and we can take a joke as well as make one.

LATP:  You are on television 5 days per week for an hour each day.  There is so much valuable information given out in each show. How often do you tape your shows and how much preparation is needed for each segment?

Dr. O:  More preparation than you would think… It’s like studying for mid-term exams every week! We each get a big, fat three ring binder full of tear sheets from our research staff. We then have to muddle through all that data and come up with bullet points to guide us through the labyrinth of the topic being discussed. I must say that all the work that I do for the show has made me a better, well-rounded surgeon.

LATP:  To date, what segment that you have participated in is your personal favorite?

Dr. O:  Working with Joan Rivers. She is an off-the-hook talent and a terrific person.
 She is such a professional to boot! She makes it look easy. And, she does know plastic surgery! We had to cut so much of what we did together because it became a bit too risque for daytime TV. Joan assisted my partner Dr. Ritu Chopra and I doing injections on stage. When I say assist, I mean she wore a white coat and make jokes as we worked. I am a pro at what I do but I must admit it isn’t easy concentrating on performing plastic surgery when you have tears in your eyes from laughing. I was always a fan of Joan Rivers but now, having worked with her, I look at her in a whole new way. She is an articulate comedic genius who is so witty and quick that it’s hard to keep up! I would work with her again in a New York second! 

LATP:  Speaking of celebrity, the world is fascinated with “Celebrity”. This past season you had the gorgeous and talented Lisa Rinna as a guest. The viewers were moved and touched by Lisa’s open attitude towards her experience with Plastic Surgery. She came across as brave, real and honest. Can you comment about that episode?

Dr. O:  Lisa opened up quite a bit in her book- way more than most celebrities would, and I have to say I really respect her for that. She made a lot of new fans that day, myself included. I jokingly admit to botox and dermal filler injections and I have no regret about going public, as Lisa did. Being in the profession, I have access to the best of the best in my field. Lisa bravely opened up about the fact that some times even celebrities make a mistake with regard to their plastic surgery decisions. She is amazing and she is one in a million! 

LATP:  We understand that you are a Founding Board Member of the Surgical Friends Foundation (www.SurgicalFriends.org). Can you please tell us a little about the inspiring work you and your colleagues do for this organization?

Dr. O:  We select needy patients and provide free services for reconstructive surgery.  Some people think of me as a beauty doctor, but I have extensive experience in reconstructive procedures. I am talking about real medical/surgical problems that some of our patients thought there was not way back from. Some of our patients have called us “miracle workers”. I am not alone in this. I am part of a network of providers, part of a team of top notch surgeons and anesthesiologists who change lives. I enjoy giving back in this way. I would like to see the organization grow into a worldwide phenomenon.

LATP:  Where do you see your career taking you in the next five years?

Dr. O:  I am just enjoying the ride. I am still a working plastic surgeon, operating weekly with my team in my private practice while managing a television career two or three days a week. That schedule gets hectic, but with my support staff we are managing to do both.

My only aspiration with regard to celebrity is to use whatever fame I have to help people who need it and raise money for good causes like the Surgical Friends Foundation.

Lab studies conducted on women between the ages of 45-66 with wrinkles, fine lines and loose skin, reveal significant results. After IDEAL-PRO-LIFT facial treatment using Progressif Serum and including a Carita Renovateur facial, 66% of participants showed a 24% improvement in skin’s micro-relief and a 30% reduction in the area with wrinkles, while 60% of volunteers showed a 32% reduction in the total length of wrinkles.  There was a 29% improvement in the firmness of skin amongst 66% of volunteers as well as a 37% improvement in the elasticity of skin in 73% of volunteers.  In subjective satisfaction tests, 100% thought their skin was firmer and smoother.

FACIAL PROGRAMS
The facial commences with cleansing, toning, the Carita Well-Being Massage and the famous Renovateur followed by IDEAL-PRO-LIFT Deep Cleansing.  Next, the aesthetician will introduce a lifting facial massage including Carita techniques and Professional mask and serums to lift skin and increase microcirculation. The application of the appropriate mask for each skin type follows, as well as either the Correcting or Stimulating program of IDEAL PRO-LIFT.  The facial culminates with the application of moisturizing treatments for the face and eyes.  The IDEAL-PRO-LIFT machine will be used during approximately 15-30 minutes of the facial.

• Deep Cleansing – Cleanses and removes impurities from the skin using only the galvanic current. This program liquefies sebum and skin follicles causing them to exit pores on their own. This method is significantly better for the skin than extractions.
• Correcting – Stimulates cutaneous micro-circulation, oxygenates the skin and eliminates toxins stored in the epidermis.
• Stimulating – Stimulates the muscles and fibroblasts by first stimulating and ionization, followed by stimulating alone.

BODY PROGRAMS
In 2007, Carita introduced three new types of body treatments, including a body-specific sponge holder with a wider surface area to cover a larger area of the body using more practical, pleasant and ergonomic movements.
