Coldspring, an ultimate love story, chronicles three documented lifetimes as well as two earlier ones that they intuited to demonstrate the evolution of karma from lifetime to lifetime through a person reincarnating within their own family, friends and community. Sheathed in layers of golden fabric of an Oscar de la Renta gown appearing like a mythical Greek goddess, Cate Blanchett is featured on the cover of this December’s issue of VOGUE, appearing on newsstands November 24th, with an interview by VOGUE writer Adam Green about her greatest role to date: A Streetcar Named Desire’s Blanche DuBois.  Green observes that Cate ‘’remains a creature of the stage” and also asks her about the importance of theater, family life and career path.

Here a few highlights from Adam Green’s interview with Cate, the self-proclaimed ‘theater geek’:

On the importance of theater:

“In the wake of everything that’s happened in the world in the last eighteen months, we’re thinking about what we’ve lost. So much of the play is about the death of poetry and idealism and hope—the fine, delicate things in our lives, the intangible, ephemeral things in our lives—which theater actually represents, doesn’t it? It’s ephemeral by its very nature. If you’re not there, you miss it. It’s gone.”

She is so dedicated to preserving theater, she and her husband of twelve years, Andrew Upton, became artistic directors of the Sydney Theatre Company, in Sydney, Australia, beginning in 2008.

On appreciating the sense of stability that staying semi-put and working regular hours has allowed both Blanchett and husband, Andrew Upton, to give their three boys:

“’There are so few experiences in our manicured, nanny-stated existence that have the quality of circus.  Theater still does.’ And so, when the boys aren’t playing with friends, they can usually be found playing backstage.  ‘They’re always engaged in the family business, so to speak.’”

Cate, with her sense of humor intact, on the matter of having children said, “The world is so massively overpopulated, but if you’re halfway decent-looking and you make nice ones, then I think it’s probably your responsibility to make more. That’s why we just have to have more of them!” We just adore Cate at LA’s The Place because she doesn’t take life too seriously!

On career choices:

“I’m not very cautious or careful. It’s always been more about having a variety of experiences than any planned trajectory… I think that in a way, projects choose you.”

Original Broadway stars, Ashley Brown and Gavin Lee, reprise their roles as Mary Poppins and Bert, respectively. On this 100th Anniversary, magician Jim Bentley was assisted by the lovely trio of Tippi Hedren, Romi Dames and Jo Anne Worley into a vintage straightjacket (which was a show in itself!) and then hoisted 100 feet into the air by a crane.

Magical History

As explained to me by Magic Castle historian George W. Siegel, the Magic Castle, formerly know as Rollin Lane Mansion, was specially built back in 1909 for affluent couple Rollin and Katherine Lane. The Lane’s were originally from Wisconsin and moved to Redlands, California in 1896, until they relocated to Hollywood, where they were tremendous leaders in the growth of the Hollywood community.

The Lanes passed away in the 1940’s with the manor changing ownership over the next several years. In 1961, it was acquired by television writer and magic-lover Milt Larsen and opened to the public as The Magic Castle, at 5 pm on January 2, 1963, gaining international acclaim ever since.

Juan Siddi Flamenco Theatre performed a stunning dance number filled with color and passion. Chairlift, a multi-instrumental three-piece rock band, currently hailing from Brooklyn, New York, play a thoughtful, dream-filled techno-pop music combining unforgettable melody with an interesting production and a classical avant-garde sensibility embracing the future. At times it feels as though they are channeling the Yeah, Yeah, Yeah’s similarly from New York City both a trio and putting forth techno/electronica vibes ever so present in our musical landscape.

Chairlift is expansive and cinematic, its name evoking an ever-changing vantage point rising (or falling) above the ground. When it came time to write and record the songs for “Does You Inspire You,” the band’s debut album, the members of Chairlift drew on a vast array of pop influences, finding echoes of country western pathos in “Don’t Give A Damn,” a swaying emo-samba in “Make Your Mind Up,” and an ironically sunny evocation of love’s turmoils in, “Bruises,” (which was the ironic soundtrack for a 2008 iPod Nano campaign). The song has an electronica backbeat and a rousing choir with a memorable haunting chorus that is iconic to the band.

“Planet Health,” the second track leads off with birds chirping and Japanese melodies crescendo into pure, breathy ecstasy. “Evident Utensil,” evokes the most simple of utensils the pencil. The song makes quick use of the synthesizer.“Le Flying Saucer Hat,” tips its hat to ‘80s synth-rock utilizing French conversation against uptempo techno-music.

Chairlift is: Aaron Pfenning, an experimental minimalist guitar player, who creates the delicate haunting quality of Chairlift, Caroline Polachek, a Connecticut-born singer whose vocals shape-shift for the ethereal to the earthly to evanescent depending on the needs of the song; and Patrick Wimberly, a Nashville native whose decision to study jazz and orchestral arrangements at university brought him into the radius of the band.

The initial success of “Does You Inspire You,” released on the Brooklyn-based indie Kanine label in September 2008 led to the signing of Chairlift to Columbia Records. A Place Called Home

Debrah Constance founded A Place Called Home in 1993 as a Non-Profit Organization offering the gang-affected youth of Central Los Angeles a safe place to do their homework, get a snack and play with friends. Now home in a 10,000 square foot space on South Central Avenue, APCH has helped serve as many as 4,000 youth, annually, proving that what started out as just 12 kids in the basement of a local church has grown into an effective program for the youth.

APCH offers numerous services including tutoring, counseling, and mentoring. They even have a high school drop-out recovery program through Los Angeles Unified School District. APCH also helps to expand the curriculum through activities in music, dance, art, theater, computer lab, fitness, civics, and community outreach. Members are empowered to become the authors of their own lives and to make a positive difference in their communities and the world.  In 2003, A Place Called Home received the President’s “America’s Promise Award” and was recognized as one of the “Top 50 Teaching Examples” in the United States at the President’s Summit in 2007.

The “Gala for the Children” recognizes men and women who have demonstrated a unique and inspiring dedication towards helping youth realize their dreams and this year’s recipients are no different helping the youth in Central Los Angeles.

This Year’s Honorees

Writer and director of movie “Akeelah and The Bee,” A Place Called Home Board of Directors Chairman Doug Atchison had nothing but positive words for this year’s recipients. He stated, “I’m truly inspired by the generosity of these extraordinary individuals who find time in their demanding lives to support the young people of South Los Angeles.” Then he went on to say, “by championing APCH – and our programs in arts, education, and mentoring – our honorees infuse our kids with hope and courage that will lead them to productive, self-reliant lives.”

Ned Colletti has spent the past three seasons as General Manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers and recently agreed to an extension. As the GM, he is responsible for overseeing the team’s baseball operations, including all scouting, player personnel and development. The first Dodger GM to do so, Colletti, in his three years at the helm of the club, has witnessed the team reaching the postseason twice.

At this year’s ceremony, Ned Colletti will be receiving the “Debrah Constance Humanitarian Award”.
 
Tyrese Gibson might best be known for his latest role as United States Air Force Tech Sergeant Epps, one he reprised earlier this year for the summer blockbuster “Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen”. He was also seen in Universal Pictures’ “Death Race”, a live action film opposite Jason Stratham and John Allan. Gibson is not just an actor, but he has managed to successfully conquer feats in the music and fashion industries as well.

“The Children’s Inspiration Award” is set to be given to Gibson at the upcoming event.

25 Years of Rock ‘n Roll

The shows were packed with guest stars and unique collaborations designed to tell the story of rock and roll. All proceeds raised from the shows will go towards creating a permanent endowment for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Foundation and Museum. Iraq Star, a non-profit foundation created by Maggie Lockridge, R.N. in February 2007, is dedicated to providing medical reconstructive surgeries to assist U.S. returning war veterans recovering from physical and mental injuries returning home from Iraq and Afghanistan. The rock band Train was on the right track with a spirited performance to a nearly sold out crowd at the Majestic Theater in Ventura, California. Front man Pat Monahan is the consummate performer with his soulful swagger and poignant lyrics.

He commanded this middle age crowd eager to please them getting right into their signature song “Meet Virginia” off of their debut CD that was recorded fifteen years ago. Veteran guitar player Jimmy Stafford delivered a killer guitar solo accompanying that recognizable track.

Monahan sang a repertoire of material from the bands five albums…“Train”, “Drops of Jupiter”, “My Private Nation”, “For Me, It’s You”, and their new release “Save Me San Francisco”. Monahan engaged the crowd by bringing up four teenage girls on stage to sing with him “She’s On Fire,” giving them pink T-shirts and deeming them as the Trainettes. It was absolutely adorable as he danced with them having join in singing the background to that track. Next he dove into singing, “The Way I Wish You Were,” and then “Get To Me,” to a rousing crowd delirious by these infectious songs. Monahan promised that he plays a different set every night on the road making every moment exciting. You never know what songs they are going to sing making it fresh and entertaining.

He then asked the crowd to be quite as he sang “When I Look to the Sky,” without a microphone, saying, “I would like to sing this song without a mic as the way in was originally intended the song to be.” That was a majestic and moving experience.

Monahan tried out their new single, “Hey, Soul Sister,” where Stafford played a ukulele and the fans sang along. He than sang “It’s About You,” and “Calling All Angels,” as the crowd waved their hands into the air. After those songs Monahan, Stafford and drummer Scott Underwood performed an acoustic set playing “Hopeless,” and explaining how Monahan used to paint houses to make ends meet, “I would listening to this song not knowing down the line I would be performing live,” he delved into Led Zeppelin’s “Going to California,” complete with hand gestures aka Robert Plant.  He then again brought up two young kids singing a soulful, “Save the Day,” joking… Pat kicks ass.

Doing some acrobatics Monahan stood on the speakers singing “Drops of Jupiter (Tell Me).” There was a video montage of San Francisco as they debuted the title track to “Save Me San Francisco,” taking a break and coming back with an encore of an INXS song.

Detroit Michigan native Uncle Kracker opened up for Train debuting their new single, “Smile,” as this pop-rap outfit entertained the crowd. He commented on the crowd as being older…but in a good way. “Forty is the new Thirty,” he maintained. The band played some uptempo southern style rock with a rap backbeat.

All in all it was and uplifting and entertaining evening. If you have the chance go see Train live…you will be blown away.

Southern California native, twenty-one year old, songstress Angel Taylor has just released her debut CD, “Love Travels,” on Aware/Columbia Records. This album is fresh, breezy, pop music straight from the heart. Taylor can best be compared to that of Norah Jones meets Alicia Keys with a twist of Ingrid Michaelson. This is the group’s latest single which can be heard in the trailer for “When In Rome,” an upcoming romantic comedy by Touchstone Pictures starring Kristen Bell and Josh Duhamel. 3OH!3’s “Starstrukk” will also be included in the soundtrack of the movie set to release in January 2010. Racing across Los Angeles in one, unwieldy day, documentary filmmakers Bella and Milo must race from Beverly Hills to Watts — and places in between — in order to get Milo’s brother Leo from jail to rehab before 8pm, or Leo goes to prison for three years. A story inspired by true events, the trio documents their trip from a suburban police station in Calabasas through mansions in Beverly Hills, East LA chopshops, rural wastelands, and housing projects in Watts as they attempt to raise the $5,000 required to get Leo into the rehab clinic. Along the way they encounter dozens of colorful characters, each with their own anomalous perspective on Leo’s larger-than-life personality and style, and each with their own excuse for why they cannot help out. In the end, it may take the desperate irony of a drug deal to get the necessary funds to send Leo to rehab. FIX stars Shawn Andrews, Olivia Wilde, Megalyn Echikunwoke, and Dedee Pfeiffer.

Director Tao Ruspoli’s Statement

FIX is inspired by a true story: My brother, a very charming, larger than life character in real life, was struggling with drug addiction. The law caught up with him, and he was offered a deal by the judge: if he didn’t check himself into rehab in 10 days, he would be sent to prison for 3 years. On the 8th day, he was arrested again, for something else. His lawyer called me, while I was working on a documentary in San Francisco, and said, “If someone doesn’t bail him out of jail and get him to rehab by 8pm tomorrow, he is going to prison for 3 years.” So I drove overnight to bail him out and soon found out that the rehab wouldn’t accept him without a nonrefundable $5000 deposit. Since we didn’t have the money, the day turned into a race to get the funds before the 8 o’clock deadline.

Years later, my wife Olivia and I had the idea of turning this premise into my first narrative feature film. I knew it was time for me to move into scripted features and I was also dying to work with Olivia, who was developing into an incredible actress. We always joked that while we had gotten married after only knowing each other for 6 months, the real commitment (and risk) it takes to make a film together required 4 years.

Given my background in guerilla style documentary filmmaking, I wanted to use the language I had developed in that medium and apply it to my first narrative project. In that way, I hoped to get the best of both worlds: the immediacy and realism of documentary and the structure and story arc of scripted, fictional work. Given advances in digital media, I was also excited by the fact that we could do this without sacrificing my love of photography and “cinematic” imagery.

The process and result turned out to be more gratifying than I ever could have imagined. Seeing Shawn bring his own vision and spirit to the Leo character was delightful. Shooting was adventurous and fun, and bringing the film to festivals around the world and seeing how the film touched people from so many walks of life was more than I ever dreamed of. I am excited for the film to now reach an even larger audience with this fall’s release.

Opening for the week was Russell Simmons’ Argyleculture line, featuring his new American Classic and Simmons Jewelry. The show was packed with fashion insiders, socialites and a very glammed up Dennis Rodman. As the show began on the outdoor pool runway, rain began to start. As it started to downpour, the crowd rushed in to the venue, while the models were caught backstage. Where we would usually lose the fashion crowd due to rain, the first looks of Russell’s line made such an impression that the crowd flawlessly flowed into the indoor venue. San Francisco based alternative rockers Train have put forth one of their best efforts on their latest CD release, “Save Me San Francisco,” on Columbia Records. This time out the band pays homage to and demonstrates their affinity for their home base of this cosmopolitan city. Train credits the city of San Francisco with cultivating the band’s identity and foundation, and so it’s no wonder their title track, “Save Me San Francisco,” tips it hat to the Bay Area metropolis that the band holds so dear. The album embodies a fresh, upbeat, youthful and spirited approach harkening back to their early musical roots.

“Save Me San Francisco,” is an autobiographical account of Train’s beginnings and also the soul of Train as a band. Frontman Pat Monahan is one of the most talented lyricists and the songs that the band have written on this new disc take the listener through the three piece’s humble start in the mid-90’s to present day music.

Accomplishments

Over the course of 15 years, Train has made its mark on music history with their Grammy-Award winning song, “Drops of Jupiter (Tell Me)” and chart topping singles, “Meet Virginia,” and “Calling All Angels.” Since forming in San Francisco in 1994, the multi-platinum selling band has traveled a long, successful and sometime arduous journey.

Album Description

“Save Me San Francisco,” taps into Train’s organic sound, recalling the blues and folk-infused rock that put the band on the map from the start. “It’s pretty basic,” Monahan explains of the record. “But really cool because there’s super catchy riffs and melodies in it, which I think are way more important that any production trick or great-sounding vocal production. It’s kind of us going backward so we can go forward.”

The first single off of the album, “Hey, Soul Sister,” is peppy and fun filled tune with a catchy chorus that remands in your head for days on end. This song was recently featured on CBS’s “Medium”. With the help of producer Martin Terefe (KT Tunstall, Jason Mraz, and James Morrison) Train was able to tap into the bands roots and put out a song that is reminiscent of their massive hit, “Meet Virginia” while remaining fresh and current.

The third track, “I Got You,” is a tribute to the Doobie Brothers, “Blackwater,” evoking sounds of the ‘70s and mentioning Sonny and Cher’s, “I’ve Got You, Babe,” signatory song. “There are certain songs that, instead of there being have an intention, there is almost a theme,” says Monahan. This album seems to possess a theme of optimism, happiness, and hope in an enduring relationship. It seems this time out that Monahan and the band, (Jimmy Stafford, Guitar, and Scott Underwood, drums) are satisfied in their relationships and the storytelling lyrics on the album is, “about love in every you can think about it,” explains Monahan.

The rest of the disc including “This Ain’t Goodbye,” “Words,” “Brick by Brick,” and “Marry Me,” all evoke fondness of working relationships and one of finding one’s self in an happy and secure place.

In this day and age, career artists are few and far between, and after a decade and a half of being a band, Train is ready to present one of their strongest efforts to date. The Society of Young Philanthropists hosted their 2nd Annual Prohibition Poker Night on Oct 14th at Aqua Lounge in Beverly Hills. Guests enjoyed sipping complimentary champagne donated by Pink Dot and snacking on appetizers by Aqua Lounge while they ‘wheeled and dealed’ like high-rolling poker and blackjack professionals.

Remember Pee-wee Herman, the goofy gray-suited character with a red bow tie that had a guileless attitude and laugh that begged to be impersonated? He’s making a comeback after a humiliating arrest that sidelined the actor’s career for decades. Pee Wee Herman, played by Paul Reubens who developed this character at The Groundlings, became a cult classic figure with children and adults after the 1985 Pee-wee’s Big Adventure, directed by the then unknown Tim Burton and the 1988 sequel movie, Big Top Pee-wee. This led to a CBS Saturday morning children’s program, Pee-wee’s Playhouse which only secured his fame and recognition even more.

After the 1991 indecent exposure arrest in an adult theater, the bad press dramatically changed the public’s view of Reubens and his once beloved character, Pee Wee. Since then, he appeared in Mystery Men and the blockbuster Blow with a few cameos on Reno 911, Pushing Daisies, 30 Rock and Dirt. But with a new Pee-wee Herman stage show in Los Angeles set to open at the Henry Fonda Theater in Hollywood running November 19 through December 20.
