The Holtorf Medical Group (HMG), founded by Kent Holtorf M.D., is dedicated to providing individualized cutting-edge medical care. HMG treats patients with scientifically researched and evidence-based integrative medicine,  specializing in tough-to-diagnose and treat medical issues such as thyroid disorders, hormonal imbalance, chronic fatigue syndrome, metabolic dysfunction (inability to lose weight),  fibromyalgia and Lyme disease. Patients travel from across the county and the world for treatment at the HMG centers.

The Holtorf Medical Group is dedicated to treating hormone imbalance, hypothyroidism, and fatigue. The common thread among these ailments: that tired feeling that plagues so many people these days. Sure, some of it can be attributed to our hectic, stressful lives, but even with rest and refreshment, that sluggish feeling may persist. The key is not to panic or to blame yourself — the answer may be beyond your grasp. It’s time to call in the professionals.

One culprit that may escape the notice of most people and medical professionals is the thyroid — specifically, hypothyroidism or a thyroid deficiency. Without our knowing it, this system controls many of the functions that help us get through the day.  As Dr. Kent Holtorf, the principal of the Holtorf Medical Group, explains it, the thyroid gland is akin to your body’s gas pedal. When thyroid production is at normal levels, you feel like your old self. But whether your body is not making enough thyroid hormone or your body is not able to convert or transport it adequately, you feel like you’re in the slow lane or maybe even moving backward.

Hypothyroidism, while far from rare, can often go undetected or treated incorrectly, even if it’s diagnosed. Studies show that the standard tests used by most doctors and endocrinologists miss up to 80% of cases. In the end, the patient is left feeling as bad as or even worse than before, unable to pull out of their funk or to lose weight. In addition to low energy and metabolism, low thyroid levels have been connected to such diseases as diabetes, insulin resistance, depression, chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, PMS, autoimmune disease, iron deficiency, chronic stress, and chronic pain (see NAHypothyroidism.org).

Dr. Holtorf is medical director of the Holtorf Medical Group, the nationally recognized Holtorf Medical Group Affiliate Centers and the nonprofit National Academy of Hypothyroidism. He is fellowship lecturer for ABAAM and the Endocrinology Expert for AOL Health.

Dr. Holtorf’s specialty is endocrine studies. He has authored several peer-reviewed endocrine reviews, covering the safety and efficacy of bioidentical hormones, inaccuracies of standard thyroid testing, testosterone replacement for men and women, the diagnosis and treatment of growth hormone deficiency, and on the diagnosis and treatment of HPA axis dysfunction in chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia. In addition, he is a reviewer for the journal Endocrine, Postgraduate Medicine and Pharmacy Practice. He has applied this knowledge to training a multitude of physicians in the use of these medical findings, especially in treatment of chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, and chronic infectious diseases, such as Lyme disease.

Dr. Holtorf is a favorite featured expert on many TV shows, CNBC, ABC News, CNN, EXTRA TV, Discovery Health, The Learning Channel, The Today Show, Dr. Dean Edell, The Doctors, Glenn Beck, Nancy Grace, Fox Business, ESPN, Rush Limbaugh, CBS Sunday Morning, Sean Hannity, and So Cal News. He has also been quoted in the Wall Street Journal, Los Angeles Times, US New and World Report, San Francisco Chronicle (front page), WebMD, Health, Elle, Better Homes and Garden, US Weekly, Forbes, Cosmopolitan, New York Daily News, Self magazine, and many others.

Many patients have testified to the effectiveness of Dr. Holtorf’s methods. Martha S. credits Dr. Holtorf with making her “dream come true” with his prescription for a hormone treatment. Ilene G. says, “Dr. Holtorf immediately asked the right questions, patiently waiting through my confusion & tears, and made changes to my medication regime that truly turned things around for me. I can’t say enough good things about him as a doctor & a caring person.” Randy J. details a long descent from an athletic past to a series of appointments with doctors who couldn’t help before finding Dr. Holtorf on the Web. Randy says Dr. Holtorf’s treatments fall nowhere short of a miracle.

If you haven’t been feeling like yourself, it could be more than a temporary funk or a bad set of circumstances — the problem can be deep within your body and undetectable to even the best-trained physicians.  The Holtorf Medical Group, however, is not your typical collection of physicians. These experts have been trained in both the traditional methods and the newest breakthroughs. You don’t have to feel tired or lethargic anymore, and the Holtorf Medical Group can be the first step to finding your pep once again.

“My name is Dr. Kent Holtorf, medical doctor and Medical Director of the Holtorf Medical Group. In terms of background I did undergrad at UCLA then on to St. Louis University School of Medicine for medical school, then back to UCLA for residency. And what we really practice here, is I think, for the difficult patient, the difficult-to-treat that haven’t been able to be helped elsewhere.

I’ve done a number of studies and review articles in endocrinology and on chronic fatigue syndrome really looking at these controversial subjects of why these patients basically don’t get treated well.

So what do we really specialize in? I think it’s a wide range of where the needs are, where patients are just falling through the cracks. We do a lot of endocrinology, a lot of infectious disease – basically neurology, psychiatry; where you know so many people… they go to psychiatrist and get an anti-depressant but they don’t look at the underlying condition. So I think how we differ, is that we look for the underlying condition. We do a lot of labs that most doctors haven’t even heard of, and really find what’s going wrong you know at the physiologic level rather than just giving meds to cover up a symptom.”
