Channing Tatum in Side Effects

The new movie “Side Effects” is a Thriller/Drama directed by Steven Soderbergh and written by: Scott Z. Burns. The cast includes, Rooney Mara, Channing Tatum, Jude Law and Catherine Zeta Jones. Side Effects opens in Theaters February 8th and is an Open Road Film.

The storyline puts a focus on prescription drugs, their side effects and how certain patient’s actions can be life threatening to themselves or even to others. Rooney Mara, plays the part of patient Emily Taylor, while her long suffering husband played by Channing Tatum, returns from completing a prison sentence for insider trading only to find his wife relapsing into deep depression.

The movie gives an insight into Emily’s life and her battle with depression, even suicide attempts and her mission to find a  medication to stabilize her state of mind. This is where she meets her new doctor Dr. Jonathan Banks, played by Jude Law, who sets out to find a solution to her problems. The Doctor reaches out to Dr. Victoria Siebert, played by Catherine Zeta Jones who was Emily’s previous doctor, to find out about her previous medical history.

This is where the story takes a surprising twist. Dr. Jonathan Banks decides to participate in a pharmaceutical test for a new drug for depression, where the risk of side effects are even higher. Things turn serious after Emily’s husband returns from a work related trip and she goes off the deep end, after taking this new prescription drug and commits an act that could end up costing her, her freedom.

Without giving too much away about the movie, it is really an interesting, yet scary look into a subject that is very common in today’s society. The film exposes some extremely interesting and topical material which concerns the extent of responsibility doctors have for their patients behavior and in many cases, the outcome.

One of the best parts about the movie, is when you really think you know where the storyline is headed,  the movie does a complete turn around and certain characters become untrustworthy and begin to betray one another. This film was very cleverly made, with lots of great cinematography, a great script and certain elements that will have you believe you are right there in the moment as the movie shows some intense scenes.

Director Steven Soderbergh proves he definitely has the knack for bringing a drama/thriller such as this, to life. Each actor in the movie plays a great part, in particularly Catherine Zeta Jones and Jude Law play their roles to perfection. Although this is not a movie that will have you walking away feeling on top of the world, it is a movie that was made to push the envelope and take a risk into exposing certain subjects that a lot of people are afraid to talk about, depression, prescription drugs and their side effects. I thoroughly enjoyed this film and I believe it is definitely going to be a success at the box office.
