Ask The Experts:

Dr. Travis Kidner was asked:

“What are the signs of cancer you should be concerned about when you have a mole?

Dr. Kidner:

Any mole that you have that is new or changing, starting to itch or bleed, you should seek medical care.

For moles that are already existing, a good rule of thumb is to use the A B C D’s:

A is asymmetry:  Any mole that looks different from one side to the other should be seen.

B is the border:  Moles with irregular borders are more suspicious for melanoma.

C is for color:  Moles that have 2 different types of color. Half of the mole is dark , the other half the mole is light – those are concerning features.

And D, diameter:  Any mole that is greater than 6 millimeters, or the size of a pencil head, should be seen and observed

But overall you just want to have a good understanding of your moles and to be able to notice any change in appearance when they do occur you can seek medical care.
