Writers In Treatment (W.I.T.), a public charity founded by Leonard Lee Buschel, Robert Downey Sr., Vernon Scott IV and Heidi Lloyd is an organization that helps writers addicted to alcohol and/or drugs get effective treatment for their disease. For the next two months, they are offering “The Reel Recovery Film Series”, an eight-week film festival, fundraising event and recovery forum, which will take place once a week, on Tuesday nights, all throughout April and May, 2009, at the Silent Movie Theatre in Los Angeles.

The Reel Recovery Film Series is one of the many fundraising events sponsored by Writers In Treatment (www.writersintreatment.org),

The eight classic films selected for the series include:

April 7:  “Permanent Midnight” with American novelist Jerry Stahl presenting and U.K. director Bernard Rose scheduled to attend.

April 14   “The Lost Weekend” (Won Academy Awards for Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor, and Best Screenplay)

April 21:  “Leaving Las Vegas” (Academy Award to Nicholas Cage for Best Actor. Nominated for Best Film, Best Director and Best Actress and Best Screenplay).

April 28:  “Sid and Nancy

May 5:   “Days of Wine and Roses” (Won Academy Award for Best Song. Nominated for Best Actor (Jack Lemmon) and Best Actress).

May 12:  “Less Than Zero

MAY 19:  “Barfly

MAY 26:  “Ivan’s XTC”  Director Bernard Rose will present with special guests.

Directors, writers and cast members will be invited to speak before each film. Comedian Ritch Shydner, co-founder of Yuckaholics, actor Jack McGee and special guests will lead an open discussion with audience members following each screening. Celebrity guests Ben Stiller, Robert Downey Jr., and Danny Huston have been invited.

“This series isn’t just for addicts or alcoholics. It’s for anyone who has ever been impacted or just wants to learn more about the disease and its treatment in a less traditional and entertaining environment”, said co-founder Leonard Buschel. “We hope to raise both money and national awareness so that indigent writers can learn that there is free help available.

Founded in 2008 W.I.T has a volunteer advisory board of substance abuse counselors, therapists and psychologists who offer free counseling for their clients.

Attendees will be treated to live jazz preceding each screening and free popcorn all evening. Beverages courtesy of HINT water (drink water not sugar!), TeaZazz (sparkling tea), Peet’s Coffee from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Writers In Treatment has partnered with top tier rehabilitation facilities including the Betty Ford Center, Hazelden and Caron Treatment Centers so our writers will receive the highest quality care available in America.
