Courage in Journalism Awards to be Handed Out at the International Women’s Media Foundation
Honoring the brave work these journalists do in reporting the news throughout the world, The International Women’s Media Foundation is hosting its 19th Annual Courage in Journalism Awards. Held on October 16th, the event will take place at the Beverly Hills Hotel on Sunset Blvd.
The IWMF Courage in Journalism Awards were created in 1990 to celebrate women journalists who have shown extraordinary strength of character and integrity while reporting the news under dangerous or difficult circumstances.
Among the honorees of the evening will be the managing editor and deputy director of Pajhwok Afghan News and vice president of the South Asia Media Commission, Farida Nekzad of Afghanistan; Yeniduzen newspaper investigative reporter, Sevgul Uludag of Cyprus; and Myanmar’s Associated press correspondent, Aye Aye Win, who will unfortunately not be able to attend the award ceremony.
There will also be a Lifetime Achievement Award given to Edith Lederer, the chief correspondent at the United Nations for the Associated Press. This award is bestowed upon a woman journalist who has a pioneering spirit and whose determination has paved the way for women in the news media.
"These extraordinary journalists have shown bravery amidst threats and intimidation," said Judy Woodruff, chair of the IWMF Courage in Journalism Awards and Mistress of Ceremonies. "They are heroines of a free press and provide us with role models for the very best journalism in the world today."
Sponsored by Bank of America, the Courage in Journalism Awards is co-chaired by Glamour’s Cindy Leive; president & CEO of the CBS Corporation, Leslie Moonves; and the co-anchor of “The Early Show”, Julie Chen.
Handing out the awards will be actress Renee Zellweger, CNN correspondent Christiane Amanpour, First Lady Maria Shriver and journalist Eugene Robinson.
The festivities will begin at 6:30 p.m. on October 16th at the Beverly Hills Hotel, located at 9641 Sunset Blvd. For more information and to purchase tickets, go to www.iwmf.org/courage.
