The Edison Bar Opens in Grand Style in Downtown L.A.

LA’s first private power plant has been transformed into LA’s latest hotspot.  A sense of "industrial opulence" mixed with a trendy vibe, The Edison Bar offers the right mix for anyone looking for a great night out, whatever their style.  On February 9th, The Edison welcomed an invitation-only patronage for its grand opening.

While getting ready for the evening, I wasn’t sure what to expect.  As a Midwestern girl still fairly new to the area, I wasn’t sure I’d fit in with the L.A bar scene.  I enlisted my sister for moral support and we did our best to accommodate the upscale dress code.  However, questions consumed us as we were plagued with insecurity.  Were we dressy enough? Were we cool enough?  Would we feel comfortable amidst all the beautiful people?

RuthAnne Gibson, The bar

Turns out we fretted for nothing as we were pleasantly surprised by the easy relaxed feel of this glamorous looking bar.  The attire ranged anywhere from jeans (one’s best pair of course) to dresses and sport coats.  The atmosphere was elegant yet comfortable, as even with 20 foot ceilings looming over us, the cushy chairs and soft benches lining the walls created a cozy atmosphere to sit back, relax and enjoy our drinks.

The Furnace

While the bar itself is pretty much wide open, there are several alcoves tucked away, ripe for getting to know somebody better in.  These little corners and other areas of the bar are appropriately named to go along with the theme of the place.  Along with the Game Room (where you can play pool) and the dance floor (where you can, you know, dance), there’s the Generator Lounge, The Furnace, The Lab, the Tesla Lounge, and the Mural Lounge.  Most of these spaces can be rented out for groups ranging from 20 to 200 people.

Miles Mosley

As we enjoyed the funky sounds of Miles Mosley and his trio, playing what has been dubbed brothel jazz, and old movies that played on two very large screens, 20’s style waiters and waitresses passed out hors d’oeuvres while bartenders served up their specialty drinks.  With a fully stocked bar, The Edison’s drink menu offers anything from Bud Light (my particular drink of choice, but feeling the evening called for something a little fancier, I settled for a glass of Sauvignon Blanc) to single malt scotch to something called Lover’s Temptress.

If you’re hungry, there’s something for you as well.  The menu may not be that extensive, but if you’re feeling like a bite, you can order such things as smoked salmon, buffalo wings, cobb salad or even a pork sandwich.

Located at 108 W. 2nd St, The Edison Bar has an amazing layout with cool architectural artifacts sprinkled in. While sipping on the bar’s fancy drinks, guests are encouraged to walk around and experience the old-fashioned ambiance with a contemporary feel.

The Generator Lounge

Whether you’re like me and a newbie to the hotspot circuit, want to impress out of towners with a cool LA experience, or just looking for a new place to hang out, The Edison Bar can accommodate you all.
